Anyone know of good all you can eat sushi places in the GTA for around $20?

Usually got to
1) Katsu by Pape & Danforth Area (HARD to find parking, not as much selection as other places)
2) Sushi Hut - Warden & Steeles Area (Great place - just hard to get seats)
3) Yang's sushi bar or something by Hwy7 and Warden
Nice place if you can get a seat - made reservations once - went there they said "1 minute" 30mins later again with the 1 minute
30mins later was at Katsu ordering food...

Need other good sushi buffet places to go near the scarborough/markham area

Umi now has horrible food in my opinion. Conversely, the place at Alton Towers (McCowan & Steeles) HAD horrible food, but now has much improved. Your mileage may vary.

Regarding Warden & Steeles... Destiny... they were doing great, but now I find they've gotten progressively worse after the buffet started.

NB: The best so far has to be the one on Highway 7 and.... damn forgot but it's in a corner... past Times and Commerce. Else, there's always the one on top of the hotel at Kennedy & 401.

I had Horrible service at Umi a week ago.

Rice was way to wet and the waitresses were barking orders "You have to eat this" and was pointing to the bones on the salmon neck.

So thats now on my Boycott list.

My Sushi on Yonge South of Finch has never forsaken me in 3 years and Sushi Hutt is ok during week days when you can actually get seats.

Destiny has better selection of Sashmi than all of the other places.

Maybe its time to organize a RFD Sushi Outing!

Of course you should eat the bones... hehehehe... I went to Umi last week (not for buffet) I thought the quality was okay. I prefer Korean sushi places over Chinese ones. Much better food and quality..

My first AYCE sushi was Shintori Buffet at Yonge and Charles, but their sushi selection is a little soft. They have a lot of other items though. There's also Sushi King at Yonge and Hayden, just south of Bloor. Theirs is $17.99 and made to order, but I didn't think much of the quality the time I went. It's also only from 4 PM on, I believe.

I liked Katsu best, IMHO.

Destiny is the one on warden and bamburg (sp?) circle? beside the MacDonald?

The only thing i like about that place is they had Sashmi white tuna... other than that their menu is a lot smaller than Yang's sushi bar..

Any one know where there is a place that got Tuna on their Sashmi menu??

Haruba Japanese Restaurant - Kennedy/McNicoll
Not bad... started to have All-You-Can-Eat before X'mas 03. Go on the weekdays... do not go on the weekends, as sometimes when they're busy, they lost your orders.

Tenichi - On Sheppard, East of McCowan
It was decent but turned out not as good as some other rest. which were mentioned above by other members. Did not go there since summer, so that no late comments.

Not sure if anyone mentioned this one, Yang's Sushi Bar - On Hwy 7 West of Main Street Unionville.
Went once only.... was packed but service is ok. Food wasn't that remarkable but not poor.

Nagoya - 14th/Kennedy Plaza.
So-called they have the most different kind of Japanese foods in town as a all-u-can-eat restaurant. They always mess up your order, especially when they're busy like hell on the weekends.

Been to a few places but wouldn't say that any place stands out as being "the best". I think we're limited here in the GTA, living off of Lake Ontario. The quality of fish will never compare to a coastal city (like Vancouver). Out of all the places I have tried, I'd say that MySushi is my favourite simply because it's never been too busy and the food is good.

Does anyone know of an AYCE place that serves Hamachi?

Sushiman (Adelaide and Victoria) has a once-a-month all-you-can-eat event @ $25 per person...they're Japanese-owned, for those who think this makes a difference, and their sushi's quite good, though not up to par with the best in the city (Hiro Sushi on King and Jarvis, in my opinion).

One other really good sushi place is Omi on Church...friend of mine swears by Sushi Kaji in Etobicoke, although I rarely venture outside the core myself..

Famous Japan in Etobicoke has sushi buffet. Look it up in Yellowpages.ca. Raw salmon = good. I tried Sakura but their rice is too damn cold and hard in my opinion.

alright I tried Fune on Saturday and I wasn't too impress. Way overly expensive. The atomsphere was decent. For the buffet they don't have just raw meat; it has to be on the rice so I found that annoying. The selection of raw fish and seafood are decent. I went there because my girlfriend wanted to see the boat float around but that got boring quickly. So IMHO it was not worth $35 per person.

all these places you people are recommending... is it really good? I've been to Destiny and that 16th and Leslie AYCE and i think both sucked. It takes forever for them to bring the rounds and each round there is only so little sushi/sashimi.

Destiny used to be great before the ayce... they didn't have a lot of business then so there was greater attention to detail. Now there are too many people and the kitchen's not fast enough.

I think you pay for what you get. I rather shell out $50 for a really good feast of sashimi and sushi.

I like *** buffet.. bad thing is they all add 10% service charge to the bill.. it's no longer optional and you have ot pay taxes on tips! Anyway, be careful when you get the bill at Destiny because they round it off. Lets say your bill is $55.56 for everything calculated. They would put $56 on the bill. I found out and I paid the exact, then the waitress (actually should be one of the boss) told me I didn't pay enough. I told her it's only 10% and then she turned away.

Maybe you would think it's just less than $1.. who cares.. but as a customer I don't appreciate it.

Thats why I don't like going to 'Chinese' owned Sushi buffets. Gawd knows what they are feeding you. Salmon that is not Sashimi grade most definitely. Too cheap to vinegar the rice, and the lowest grade soya sauce they can find :) Yum Yum

In that case, you should try Asahi Japanese Restaurant (200 Carlton St Toronto). Neighbourhood is ghetto, but the food is pretty good - probably one of the better places I have visited.
I believe that the cost is still under $20 and is Japanese run. So, don't expect the service to be fast when you order 20 rolls at a time. :)

Have not been to the all you can eat on Church/Bloor. I believe that place is called Asahi Sushi Zone. Don't believe it belongs to the same owner of Asahi on Carlton.

I would say selection is about the same as the ones uptown. There's usually a few items that one place may lack, but make up in others. It just depends on what you like. I went on a week night and was pressed for time. So, I didn't get to try out everything. The only concern is the wait between orders. The AYCEs uptown are fairly quick, but I would give the edge to Asahi in terms of quality. You got to try to find out. :)

BTW, I just tried Destiny the other day. I was surprised to see white tuna on the menu even though it was served in paper thin slices. Are there any other AYCEs that serve white tuna?

A little off topic, but there's a place called GAL Sushi on Highway7/Chalmers that serves a lunch special for $6.99. Lunch box with ~10 pieces of sashami, 6 pieces of maki, 6 sushi, rice, some type of noodle, plus the soup and salad. Not all you can eat, but not bad. Closed on Tuesdays. If there are other places like this please let me know. The AYCE places are killing me. ;)

Bamburgh Circle.

Destiny sushi all you can eat at Bambourgh is ok.... more like ok-minus. The menu is standard among the all you can eats. Like all the other all you can eat places, they add extra rice to the sushi to fill people up quicker.

It was months ago since I ate at that place, but for the price, it's still worth a try. All I can remember was that the tempura was very oily...

I think Destiny at Bamburgh is alrite. You pay for what you get. Menu is good; I would say lots of variety, I mean all you can eat noodles and rice and stuff. I know that's a scam cuz that stuff will fill you up fast, but at least you get variety. Plus don't forget, at Destiny you get all you can DRINK too!! Haven't really seen this anywhere else without paying extra. Plus the drinks come in cans, so you're not getting ripped off by getting fountain soft drinks when most of the time they are just watered down. The sushi can be better but want can you do, better quality means more money!!

Sushi Hut is good, but ya, like everyone has stated, small.

I tried the other sushi place at Bamburgh, the one beside Pizza Nova and in front of Sam Woo BBQ, its GOOD, but the only problem is that it's not all you can eat and its only take out. Besides that, probably one ofthe best sushi I've eaten so far. I think it's actually opened up by a japanese family.

Tats my two cents.

A Taste Of Japan is not AYCE. For Yang's, Go on Hwy 7 east, past Wardan, You will come across a traffic light, on the right there's a plaza with Royal Bank, just turn in there and on the left. Right across the plaza is a car dealership, forgot what it is. If you pass the railway on Hwy 7 east, then you went too far. It's like one or two traffic light pass Wardan. Hope that helps.

Will never go back to Umi Sushi!! The service sucks and they are extremly slow - even though we were one of the two tables being served. Food was decent though. What ticked me off was that after I paid ( included 10% service charge) I had 3 pieces of tempura left and I didn't want it to go to waste and they refused to pack it up and prefered to throw it away!!

I don't get the logic.

I think it's wrong to push the service charge on to the cutomer. We should have a choice. Now if they repeatedly provided a good level of service this would be a non-issue - infact I would probably leave extra change on the table for the waitress or bus-boy to pick up.

If i'm provided good service I on average provide about a 20% tip and at some places complimented the manager on the attendee's service - which usually results in better service the next time I come there. That's how much I value service.

As far as AYCE one of the places's I've had great service is StarWalk Buffet right behind UMI Sushi. Now there's a Chinese Buffet that has prompt service. I've done what I said in the above paragraph once and the manager really appreciated it and now visits my table for a quick chat before I begin my dinner. great place.

I recently found a new AYCE Sushi Joint on Bayview north of John Street in Thornhill in the Food Basic Plaza. Its called Aji San the sign from Bayview says "All U Can Eat Sushi"

Sashimi: Best I have had from almost any all U can eat place. Very Fresh and Variety. Salmon, Red Snapper, White Fish(maybe butter fish), Surf Clam, and Makeral.

Maki: Very good and lots of unique choices. and they do not roll them in a TON of Rice.

HandRolls: Lots of Variety and not overly stuffed full of Rice.

Tapanyakie(sp?): 2nd best Terayaki beef I have ever had.

Dessert: Can't go wrong with Green Tea Ice Cream and Chocolate pudding.

Drinks: Pepsi, Ice tea of course they are Bottomless.

Seating: This used to be a fish and chip restaurant so its not too big. I usually call ahead to make reservations just in case.

Customer Service: Very prompt in greeting you at the door and always checking up with fresh tea and beverages. Also they recommend different rolls and stuff. Also worth mentioning is that there is no current time limit.

I have been to this place 3 times and they are very consistant and I will continue to go back.

Damn sounds like I am plugging this place! Anyways hows a RFD sushi night sound sometime? I am always game for going to this place!

aji san...that plaza looks beaten down....
sushi hut? i dunno abt u...but i don't think it has good quality.
fune is good, but a bit on the expensive side, but i like the uni there.
yang is probably the best value overall, good plaza, good atmosphere, good food.
umi and a bunch of others like nagoya anddestiny don't really have quick and prompt service, but worst of all is the quality of the food is NOT good.
i rather have 10 choices of the best quality food than 100 choices of not good food, makes your stomach go bad.
when you think about it, you can spend $10 more and get yourself some uni handroll, hamachi and toro....just it's not AYCE, but it tastes much better.

My favourite place is Sushi on 7. Its on the North West side of Kennedy and Hwy 7, just West of the Nissan car dealership.
No problems getting seats (though it gets pretty busy around 730), service has been excellent, food has been tasty and fresh and its a bit cheaper than Yang's Sushi.
Without a doubt I will be going back to this place!

First visit to Yang's Sushi this afternoon. Big disappointment. Though the food seems good quality, it was tons of rice. If you like your tempura greasy, then they were excellent. And yes, there was the mandatory 10% service (after tax!). Must try Aji, to determine if in fact if they are better than My Sushi for me.

no i am not implying that you are cheap. But its understandable they slap on a 10% service charge since a table of 4 for dinner on weekends will be around $92 taxes in, and i sincerly think a lot of people will round it to $100 or even less.

This is by far my FAVOURITE AYCE Japanese place now. Everytime i go, they have a 10% off special and dinner ends up costing just under $20 (tax and tip in)
GREAT fish, very fresh, amazing teriyaki and an extensive menu of items. No problems getting seats either so far, though it gets busy around 730.

FYI its on the North side of Hwy 7 just West of Kennedy (there is a comic store in that plaza).

I went to Ten Tchi (Tin Yut) at 4800 Sheppard Ave. E. I have to say it was a very very bad. The first 10 minutes they were good, food was in time, service was alright. And then everything just went downhill. We ordered about 40-50 items overall and I think in the end only 20-23 or so came. The oysters were the size of my thumb and the menu was small. They also make you order the stuff with the waiter instead of checking it off a sheet. After the first hour, they started serving us 3 pieces of sushi instead of 4 (we had four people). The waitress there started to get pissed at us and giving us attitude after the first hour. Drinks was 3.99 for a jar with no refills. I have to say this store is crap, and i'm never going back again.

The AYCE places are killing me. ;)

That is a rockin' good lunch special. Had it a couple of times. Tasty, lots of food, good price.

is this place all u can eat? i pass by it all the time. it used to be a veitnamese restaurant, then a Cantonese cafe place, now it is a sushi bar.

well if it is all-u-can-eat, how much is it? and how good is their sashimi and maki? a review would be great!

I have done some reviews on www.chowhound.com for sushi places all around toronto.. prob 8 or 10 or more.

............... There is this one sushi place, forgot what it's called but it's in yorkville gotta walk downstairs is pretty good.

the place that is downstairs in yorkville is the BEST place in all of yorkville, better than sushi inn, or yakata.

its called Yorkville sushi, my review can be seen here:

Yorkville Sushi

Well, here is another of a few FREE PLUGS, that i host on my website.. in the past its been anything from electronic gear.. to... well, dining and food. Usually good food, like sushi, or I will rant about HORRIBLE food, again, like sushi...

See.. LOTS of ppl go to eat sushi.. more and more are exposed to it, and there are "sushi-buffets" springing up all over markham. I used to be a major threat to those places.... but its restaurants like this one that is keeping me away from those suburban-sushi-smorgusboards-for-the-masses....

http://imagehost.darkernet.co.uk/i/PICT023s.JPG

yes, that is Japanese preserved shredded scallop, way in the back!

Quanitity I can get anywhere....... but QUALITY sushi is hard to come by these days.. and since i have been eating sushi pretty much, well for over a decade now, i have a pretty picky palette when it comes to seperating the good from bad.. and usually the good has to be very good. Very good value, quality, price, portion and service.

A Toronto staple of mine that long-time-readers will know i mentioned repeatedly has been "Sushi on Bloor". Yes, a suburban kid like me has urges to go downtown for a day and i'll go out of my way to dine at this place.. I have been to others, MANY other sushi restaurants in Toronto, ones that brag on Japanese names, ones owned by Japanese people, ones operated by Koreans and even one in a yuppie part of town where the sushi-chefs were appearently drunk, but they all fall short because when i walk thru that door on Bloor i am always greeted with a table in 5-15 mins followed with generous portions of quality nigiri-sushi, maki, sashimi, terriyaki, tempura, at a reasonable price and i'll be taken care of with great service...and most importantly, this is what KEEPS ME GOING BACK.

Now, one of their own sushi-chefs, Sam, has taken off to become the man-the-helm of a NEW sushi restaurant: Yorkville Sushi.

http://imagehost.darkernet.co.uk/i/PICT0246s.JPG

Located 1-minute away from Bay subway station is a sushi-bar that has the same core-menu-selection of dishes as Sushi on Bloor, but with a few extras and slightly greater selection.
http://imagehost.darkernet.co.uk/i/PICT0251s.JPG
How the heck do i find out about new sushi restaurants in the heart of downtown.. i have no idea, but what i can say is that i showed up at 9pm on a monday night and expectedly the place, as with all of Yorkville, was relatively quiet. I ordered my ususal off a menu very similar to its sister-sushi-bar, and I was pleasently surprised as it was prepared skillfully, with salmon that was firm and flavourful and tuna that was rich, tender and full aroma. Both the salmon and tuna bit cleanly and didn't tear or sheer. The rice used for the maki and nigiri sushi was cold (as its supposed to be) and seasoned perfectly, with rice vinegar and a hint of sugar.

http://imagehost.darkernet.co.uk/i/PICT0235s.JPG"
I hate it when i go for sushi and my maki (roll) has tiny filling on the inside and a huge coating of rice on the outside... faithful to its sister-sushi-bar, Yorkville Sushi's maki is top-shelf (as you can see) and packs a generous 8-piece maki set with their bento-boxes and sushi-combos and 'a la carte'.

http://imagehost.darkernet.co.uk/i/PICT0253s.JPG
Prices are similar if not identical to Sushi on Bloor (very high on the value scale), so don't think just because you are in Yorkville, you are gonna get blasted with an expensive meal.

They also have an outdoor patio and are LCBO liscensed.

http://imagehost.darkernet.co.uk/i/PICT0256s.JPG.....................look for the sign.

Hey trueno92,
Nice review..just a quick question...what are their prices like? Are they reasonable or extravagant due to their location?

Thanks!

the prices are really reasonable with say a terriyaki bento box complete with
generous portion of chicken terriyaki,
assorted vegtable tempura (around 8 pcs, can't remember),
salad,
rice
and an 8pc maki sushi (salmon/cucumber - can be substituted for any other roll on the menu for $2-$3 extra, depending)
TOTAL= $8.50, ice cream is included.

they also have sashimi combo dinners and i think the average price is something like $13 for 18pc sashimi... again don't quote me on that as this venue is still relatively new and i haven't been there enough yet to know everything on the menu by memory!

They also have lunch combo specials for $6.95 and includes everything from their bentobox specials, to buckwheat noodles and a very good assortment of maki sushi combos 12-16pc combos, aslo $6.95 of say,
Salmon/salmon roe/avacado/cucumber roll 8pcs AND unagi/avacado eel roll 8pcs
or
Salmon/Salmon roe/avacado/cucumber roll 8pcs and Tuna nigiri sushi 4 pcs.
they also have the tempura shrimp rolls and again they have a pretty extensive list of Maki sushi and some very FRESH SASHIMI.

I have tried the other places in the area and they are waaaay overhyped, too busy and their quality just isn't as good, hands down.

to M-e-X-x, how was sushi on 7??!?!?!????

BTW out of the places listed in this thread, INAKA, TENICHI and UMI are THE WORST, in consideration of

INAKA: they selectively forget your orders, and some of their sushi looks a little too "amature".. sometimes a particular roll with have 3 ingredients, other times it will only have 2, sometimes its just not put together properly.. hand rolls are.......... total rice.
They selectively decided when we were full, and when we wanted more sashimi, we started getting scraps of very flat and thin salmon from what must have been a different part of the fish than what started the meal. Service wasn't great either.

TENICHI: first serve is acceptable, once u start ordering again, they THINK that you have forgotten what japanese food is, or worse, what QUALITY food is.. and they start serving junk, seeing as u got your one "acceptable" order, they save the rest of the "acceptable" food for other customers. Servings are surprisingly rationed here at this AYCE..., making u wait for every 3 pcs of sashimi or otherwise. I have personally witnessed a plate of decent looking sashimi going to a table that was just seated, and what must have been the 'reject' parts of that fish being served to our table (3rd order).

AGREED!!!

UMI: whomever said they PREFER korean sushi over chinese sushi HAS TO BE KIDDING ME. Korean sushi consists of kim-bap, usually california rolls, or vegtables, and closest relative is some futo-maki deviant. Seledom will they have a vast selection of raw fish (sashimi).. koreans use sushi like a 'healthy snack' and i dont' think it would be seriously considered a real meal.. esp when you have duk-gal-bee, bulgolgee and bottles of soju..

see for yourself:
http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v85/fatman_seoul/gochu_kimbap/gochu_kimbap01.jpg <----------- notice box, Jong-Ro's Gochu Kimbap Jong-Ro's kimbap homepage (http://www.jongrokimbap.co.kr/ProductMenu/MenuIntro.asp)
http://img28.photobucket.com/albums/v85/fatman_seoul/gochu_kimbap/gochu_kimbap02.jpg

tuna (more like tuna salad) kimbap, top
korean cham chee kimbap, bottom
*notice the ham used in both rolls*

I enjoy kimbap as a compact and healthy snack-on-the-go, but wouldn't classify it as genuine sushi. At least cantonese/chinese stuff takes the original essence of raw fish and rice and adds upon it, creating more elaborate rolls.

the spicy salmon/tuna rolls at umi are hideous.......designed for snacks, not dinner/lunch.

WHAT is the price for Aji San at bayview and john? ( i feel like doing another review, esp considering they have salmon/whitefish/mackeral, do they have unagi sushi too?)

Sushi on 7 man! No doubt about it. Their salmon has been amazing :!: everytime i go. I've been there about 8 times since its opened and haven't been disappointed once yet!

Prices:
Mon - Thurs Dinner 17.99
Fri - Sun Dinner 19.99
All week lunch 11.99

Sashimi:
Has been fresh everytime I've been there and tasted great! Even their Uni (when they first opened, you got free uni with an AYCE) was amazing along with their Salmon, butterfish (a must everytime i go). They have a great variety of sashimi (about 7+ items I'd say).

Rolls:
They absolutely ram these rolls with fish, crab, eel etc. All of them are made right when you order so they taste great. The fish inside is the same as sashimi's: fresh and tasty! :cheesygri

Other stuff:
yea why eat THAT at a Sushi AYCE? Just wanted to try everything out... and I'm glad i did.
- Fried Chicken pieces (not cutlet) is like popcorn chicken. They give you some mayo to dip it in and it tastes great.
- Fried Scallop is very sweet and tender inside. They put a light batter on it then fry it up real good. I usually finish 2 plates (8 pcs) myself.
- Sweet Potato Tempura Roll. They just put sweet potato tempura into a roll (think cucumber roll). So simple yet so satisfying.
- Beef Mushroom roll. Served it real hot right from the kitchen. I love freshly made food...
Last but not least:
Banana tempura is great. Save room for 2 of these. These are a personal fave of mine so i don't expect all of you to share my love for these things.

Honourable mention: California Rolls, shrimp tempura, chicken teriyaki udon, fried eel rice, sushi pizza (big rice patty tho)

The only shortcoming of the menu is their spicy salmon. Its good, but certain places can make it better. If they'll tweak is just a bit it would be perfect.

I know this makes little diff, but Sushi on 7 gives you the whole can of pop (Coke, Sprit, C-Plus etc) rather than some 3rd party brand drink in a 2L bottle. Just shows you the attn. to detail.

Like many of the posters said: this is now my favourite Japan Sushi bar

You'll probably see me there sometime with my fried scallops and banana tempuras the next time you go.

Here is the back of their biz card. North West Corner of Kennedy and Hiway 7.
There is a comic book store in the same plaza, the Ontario licensing office, as well as "Golden Horse" restaurant. If you can see the nissan dealership at Kennedy and 7, then you're not far off. it is literally in the plaza right next to the Nissan to the West. The store is pushed back a little bit in the plaza (the store fronts aren't flush, rather its shaped diagonally). Below is a pic of the front.

SUSHI on 7
[mini-review] -updated for those that will visit this weekend-

OK, so i came, i saw, i conqured.

The establishment is new. less than 2 months old. decent sized and very attentitive staff. The quality of the food is indeed, worthy of the hype. The presentation is supurb.

I was quite impressed.

Service is fast, and the quality of the food is just really clean, fresh and good.

a full and detailed review will come after i get some time to type it up over a very busy weekend but here are some highlights:

Butterfish or white tuna and Salmon Sashimi. Very very well done  the quality of the pieces were above average even of a-la-carte establishments. first plate was on par with most of the better ayce's but the 2nd serving blew it out of the water! Not limp, and the slices were full sized sashimi grade, thin lines of fat and simply some of the better sushimi i had in quite a number of AYCE outings.

Torigai sushimi, rare again, this and the hokkigai were very clean (rare) :D and very fresh.. the fact they were so clean surprised me at what i may have eaten elsewhere in the past.

TEMAKI. HANDROLLS. this is one of only a FEW places where i have had a temaki where there was fish all the way thru to the end.

Honourable Mention:
Temago Sashimi = Egg omlette sushimi. This is rather a treat because its rare to find at many restaurants and it was executed perfectly at this one. I have had this at few sit down restauarants and those don't even come close to the one at this 'all u can eat'.

Special rolls were very good as well. They are about the size of Futo Maki at other places but here was 1/2 the rice on the outside and a great selection of filling on the inside. Rainbow rolls are very large (futo sized) and have a generous amount of salmon on top of the roll as well as another layer of avacado over the salmon! The spider roll has just a bit too much mayonaise for my taste, but thats just me... the crab itself was excellent! far better than what is served up at yangs or sushi hut - and sushi huts spider roll isn't bad at all most times.

I am overall quite impressed and will probably be abandoning the other sushi all-you-can-eats for the very reason that this place seems to thrive itself on quality food - not just horde amounts of it. I will have much more detail in the full review.

The only weakness i can see is that the names on the menu are translated right from japanese/chinese into english... so not everyone may know what a "unagi and avacado temaki" (bbq eel and avacado handroll) could be. Or a spicy murago maki, etc..

The menu listings could be just a humble oversight, or it could be a straight out hint that this new sushi bar on highway 7 packs the quality demanded by real sushi purists, as well as a selection that will appeal to long-time fans and newcomers of all-you-can-eat sushi.

hope that helped, stay tuned.

i hardly go to all you can eat japanese restaurants, but we decided to give Nagoya at 16/bayview a shot, and the place was horrible!!

the rice in the hand rolls were buldging out of the seaweed....the taste of everything das drained out by disproportionate amount of rice.

the service was poor, the restaurant was not packed, but the server still managed to be impatient and forgetful...

dinner consisted of 2 adults and one child, but we were still charged for the price of 3 adults...worst of all, the charged an additional 5% service charge for credit card usage...

will not recommend...

Just came back from dinner at Sushi on 7. Food was very good. But I'm still having a hard time trying to understand the calculation of the bill. For 3 of us, the bill came up to $68.?? after applying the 10% off coupon. Something is wrong, since I thought it should be 17.99x3x.9x1.15x1.1 = $61.44. If my calculation is right, then I'm afraid I cannot recommend the place, since the people there insisted they did give us the 10% off. Unless of course they have increased the price from $17.99 to like $25+. In which case definitely not recommending.

If i remember correctly, their price for dinner from Fri-Sun is $19.99
19.99 x 3 = 59.97
59.97 x 1.15 tax x 1.1 s/c = 75.86
75.59 x .9 discount = $68.28

Usually i'll go for dinner Mon-Thurs, or else lunch. Cheaper that way for me!

My mistake then. In any case, I paid $70 in total for the 3 of us. Did I say the food was very good? Best of the bunch we've tried so far.

I highly recommend Katsu, in the Pape & Danforth area. I went down with the guys after volleyball and downed plates of 150 pieces of sushi at a time. Although it took an enormous amount of time to recieve orders, we discovered if we ordered immediately, after recieving each dish, it would feel like an endless supply of sushi. Also, the non-sushi portion of the all you can eat was great including well-cooked meats. The seating is comfortable and the service is great if you remember to divide up your requests between the different waiters & waitresses.

katsu is alright... they have improved from horrid to acceptable since they first opened.

the sashimi portions are retardedly small (salmon and surf clam i beleive are the only selections), and the more u order at a time, the smaller each piece gets........ so basically 6 pieces on one order could be the same amount as 12 pieces on your next order.

Wow... that is so pathetically sad of you to do that. You maybe saved an extra 60 cents there? If you're Chinese, I'd be ashamed to be associated with types like you. For ah_longs info, most if not all AYCE's charge 10% service.

Anyhow, Fobulous sent me a coupon (much thanks) so we checked it out during lunch. His testimonial was completely true and the food there was really good especially the butterfish and scallops. Sushi pizza is interesting but filling.

We paid extra tip as service was excellent in every possible way (attentive staff, tea cups always full, prompt food delivery, etc). Even though they charged 10% for service, the servers were superb and they definitely deserved a bit more.

I frequent an AYCE Japanese Buffet on Yonge and Eglinton...it's called
SUSHI STAR...fairly new restaurant (2 years)...lunch $ 10.99 and dinner $19.99...they also have the separate ordering on the menu...

The food is pretty good...they bring you the food on your table once you completed the form that lists all the food you are ordering...BUT make sure that you finish what you order or you have to pay extra...

The place is small but quaint

The actual address is: 109 Eglinton Avenue East (west of Yonge Street)

:) :)

Alright went there yesterday. It's actually East of Yonge Street. Nice little place, the menu for lunch was a tad small but the food was nice. And 8.99 for my little sister, now that's a deal ;)

Sushi on 7
Review: September 28th, 2004

I am glad I waited until I had 2 visits at this sushi venue to give a hopefully concise review. The first time, I could have sat anywhere I wanted. Exactly 1 week later, I would have had to wait 20 mins for a table. On a day when the restaurant is dead, I would expect fast, decent food, but on an unusually busy evening when just about all ~90+ seats are occupied, that to any restaurant is a completely different story. And for one that takes your orders as an all-you-can-eat (a-y-c-e), well, that is quite the challenge. How did ‘Sushi on 7’ fit the bill?

Popular to many Japanese restaurants, the décor utilizes Japanese-styled brightly stained wooden tables and this lends for a very clean appearance. The dining area is larger than it appears to be with unobstructed seating. Booths line the left side and each can occupy 4 adults or around 5-6 children.

Service is much better than average. The waitresses speak English and Cantonese fluently know how to hustle. On the slow night they were very attentive and on the extremely busy night, they were bussing tables and taking orders like programmed machines. With the bustle, it was difficult to catch their attention at times, but it wasn’t long before one of them would notice and quickly take our orders. I didn’t find this much of an issue as the food still came within a reasonable time, and it didn’t seem at all rushed or thrown-together. There were a few tables that had been seated well past the 1:30hr limit and it didn’t seem to be much of an issue, as the staff had let them complete their meals, even with a short lineup at the door – reasonable in my opinion. Tips here are well deserved – even ontop of the service charge.

Sushi on 7’s menu boasts a selection of over 180 different items. I will let you know now, that I do not possess the stomach capacity to fit each item, but instead I took a generous sampling of the items that many sushi a-y-c-e’s are beginning to skimp on.

Sashimi.

Just about EVERY SINGLE AYCE I have been to has tried to feed me some very obscure slices of salmon. These are usually the really flat and long ugly slices that hardly resemble sashimi at all. This is from the tail end of the fish where the meat gets skinny. THANKFULLY, I suspect that Sushi on 7 reserves these unsightly pieces for their maki (rolls) and temaki (handrolls). To serve that fish and call it sashimi is truly disrespectful to the art of sushi.

http://imagehost.darkernet.co.uk/i/sushi7b.jpg<-----excellent

Some people describe good sashimi as ‘butter’ or melts in your mouth. Has to be firm enough to hold with chopsticks and cold enough to have that refreshing clean taste. There should also have a degree of firmness to the meat and shouldn’t be wet and limp (overthawed) or rubbery (thawed, frozen, and thawed again). Look for the flavor to be full and pure, no hints of freezer burn and taste should refreshingly clean. I was surprised that this was just the case at this AYCE. I have had worse sashimi at some sit-down-places and have had much worse sashimi at many Toronto AYCEs. Slices here are picture perfect, large, full-bodied, tender, flavourful salmon.

The ‘butter-fish’ is also known as white-tuna or ‘oil-fish’ is indeed a treat, as most places do not serve this, or the ones that do, serve it with a huge sacrifice to quality to everything else on the menu (anaka). Very well done, fresh, clean and since it is some tuna-variant, the fish has an unusually high water-content, so do not expect it to be completely dry like the salmon and red-snapper.

Sashimi Honorable Mentions

Other sashimi includes popular hokkigai (surf-clam) and extremely rare cousin, torigai (not the bird-shell clam, another cousin to that) but these are both perfectly clean, tender and very well prepared. Tamago or egg omlette sashimi is extremely well done.

All are prepared and arranged beautifully when brought to your table. (huge oversight at some restuarants)

Nigiri

Neatly prepared on an individual bed of rice, nigiri sushi is the favourite of most Japanese and considered the finest art and leaves no room for mistake in execution or final presentation. Here each piece was perfectly prepared and the Unagi (eel) nigiri is great. Pay attention to the rice and look for a hint of rice vinegar and touch of sugar. Solid selection here and again, picture perfect and very fresh.

2 items that could be added would be octopus sushi and mackeral but its wasn't missed too dearly.

Temaki

Murago (red tuna) is only one out of a generous selection of handrolls here. Again, the nori breaks off cleanly and I have not had to try and tear it as I attempt to eat. They do not over fill these with rice and the 3 Tuna temaki had the tuna going right through to the end of the handroll. This is perfect temaki.

Maki

http://imagehost.darkernet.co.uk/i/sushi7a.jpg<---spider maki

I can tell that the chefs take great pride in the selection and presentation of their maki rolls. The rainbow rolls here are skillfully prepared and are a benchmark by others should be measured. Spider rolls of softshell crab are excellent, and top quality. Every other place I have dined at does not have the same quality of crab used in their rolls, the flavor here and size of the crab used is superb.

Hot menu

Chicken karaga (popcorn chicken) is a welcome treat, as is the mussels in sake broth. Tempuras range from vegetable to shrimp to tai (or mackerel, i can't remember), to squid. There are also many different don-bury (eel on rice, teriyaki chicken on rice, something on rice, etc) on the menu, but I didn’t try them, I would trust they are just as good as everything else I had tried.

The hot food and sushi both arrive quickly and are fresh/hot/crispy/cold depending on what you had ordered and from what I could tell, the dishes were not sitting for long before it got to our table.

Desserts are well thought out with a selection of fried-ice-cream (ice-cream rolled in a light/crisp coating) as well as tempura banana (notoriously always ‘sold-out’ at yangs) and these are both very delicious ways to end a great meal.

I am not crazy about the cans of pop, opposed from served 2L torpedo bottles. I am there to eat sushi, and I like green tea with it. If it were McDonalds, then sure, but at a sushi place, really, the difference is hardly noticeable, especially when the sushi is THAT good.

Overall

I am overall quite impressed and will probably be abandoning the other sushi all-you-can-eats for the very reason that this place seems to thrive itself on quality food - not just horde amounts of it.

Sushi on 7 offers many sashimi, maki and temaki that is unique to only their restaurant from the rest that i have been to across the GTA, from downtown to 16th avenue and anywhere inbetween. Many of the sushi ayce's now all overlap each other, offering pretty much the same fare of the same somewhat acceptable quality. It is easy to see that Sushi on 7 has tried to diversify their menu with a broad range of items that only they serve.

The staple items that they do cover are superior in quality to others in the area (yangs/nagoya within minutes away = direct competition) and with the quality and freshness comes picture perfect presentation (try saying that 3x fast), and effecient, accurate service. Many places i had been to have confused my orders and forget about them completely or selectively forget certain items from our order. This only happened once here, but instead we got 1 extra Sashimi rose on top of what we ordered.

On my 2nd visit, Sushi on 7 was rammed and from what the chef had told me, he said it had been busy all week, when just last week things were rather slow. So I think he will have his work cut out for him in the weeks to come.

I have noticed that the quality of many restaurants tend to decline after they have received such success ( :o Nagoya, sushi hut, yangs, etc) but I sincerely hope this is not the case with Sushi on 7, but until then, ITADAKIMASU!!!

Wow. Sushi on 7 was really up to the hype! We must've put a dent into their salmon supply, we ordered at least 25 pieces! (4 of us). LOL... they were probably thinking "wtf is this chinese kid thinking bringing 3 white guys... cleaning out the place!" In total, we would've spent over $250 at an non-AYCE place.

Anyway we felt bad b/c we got the waitress to come like 5x and had really complicated orders. We didn't use the 10% coupon, and on top of the 10% gratuity we chipped in $15. It was well worth it! :D Can't wait till we go again, I bet they can though :D

popcorn chicken (still a must have for me here)
sweet potato tempura roll (i love this one too... give it a try if you like tempura)

spicy salmon crispy roll (very tasty still! We ordered 3 of these rolls for the four of us)

The only buffet I know is Wasabi Sushi House on Hurontario and Eglington. It's right beside Swiss Chalet.

But BEWARE, the service stinks and seating is only limited to 1.5 hours. Cost is $19.99 I think and lunch is $13.99. Food is mediocore and selection SUCKS!

Only sashimi is served for dinner buffet and the only choices are Salmon, Red Snapper and some other one that tastes like crap.

IMHO, I'd rather take the effort and drive to Markham/Scarborough for sushi buffets.

But for normal eating, UMI SUSHI at Grand Park Drive and Burnhamthorpe is alright. Crazy Sushi is OK, but too pricey for me. ;)

Wow, that sucks. Is it like that for all japanese buffets? Guess you have to pay less tips then :cheesygri

Maybe you would think it's just less than $1.. who cares.. but as a customer I don't appreciate it.

thanx for the warning ~~~ i think i would be better off driving to Markham ~~ since it cost as much and the only extra is the gas !!! and indeed crazy sushi is way ~~~ too expensive !!!!

but talking about the 10% service charge, i'm always confuse, whenever they give me the bill ~ i don't know if i should still leave some tips or what?? and i hate it when they don't state the service charge on the bill, they only show GST, PST and then all of a sudden the amount would jump!!

Do you know what the unlimited sashimi choices are at Syogun? thanx.

btw, no one mentioned "my Sushi" on Valleymede - inside the Mcdonald's plaza across from Commerce gate in Richmond Hill. It is Korean owned. They have Korean "galbi' ribs and the best salad and seaweed salad. Anyways, their sashimi choices include - salmon, white tuna, red snapper, mackeral, and the usual surf clam, fake crab... they have rainbow row, black/red/green dragon roll (shrimp tempura with eel/salmon/avacado rolled on the outside...

Syogun at 8261 Woodbine ave in Markham is pretty good too, they only serve sashimi at dinner though

the place that is downstairs in yorkville is the BEST place in all of yorkville, better than sushi inn, or yakata.

its called Yorkville sushi

I recognize this restaurant. I ate there a long time ago. Nice, clean- no complaints from me. Is it still opened??

Yorkville Sushi (probably not all you can eat)
84 Yorkville Ave
Northwest corner of Bay and Yorkville
Tel: 416-962-2828

someone had bad experience at Katsu (All You Can Eat)/(at Danforth/Carlaw):

Unfortunately, Yorkville sushi closed its doors just under 3 months ago... nice picture btw hahah

i honestly don't think ANYONE ever has a good experience at Katsu. That place is crap. I have eaten there a couple of times and its OK, but NEVER good.. its just barely cutting it because anytime i had been there, has been out of sheer desperation.

Kuni Sushi Ya on Baldwin St. near College/St. George. It's around $15 I believe for AYCE. Very nice food presentation. Food taste is reasonable too (but then im never too picky with my sushi). They charge for leftover food so only order wat u can eat.

Wasabi @.. not too sure on the actual address. But it's near Pacific Mall. To be exact, it's almost right beside "Star Walk Buffet" as it's one of the smaller shops along the side.
Great place, and don't forget to try their green tea ice cream :cheesygri

wasabi a bit too far for me. Looking for somewhere close to Lawrence and Don Mills. At lease within driving distance.

:) :)

I decided to try out Sushi Star tonight, I have to say I was disappointed. The form they give you to select buffet items is very short, I thought it would be close to the menu they put on the website but it's not. For $18.99 for dinner, I expect there to be more selection. They only had 4 or 5 kinds of sashimi (salmon, red snapper, surf clam, crab, maybe one other?) so no tuna, nor white tuna.

To be fair, the sashimi was exceptionally fresh, and the tempura was super crispy. The service was prompt. But... for me the destination items are the garlic steak cubes and baby ribs that you can get at most Japanese AYCE; they didn't have it, so I won't be going back to Sushi Star.

Hello fellow Sushi lovers,

I went to Sushi on 7 about 1 month ago after reading the great reviews here and it is true. Great selection and quality sushi, ate alot and enjoyed the service too. My favorite was the Spider Roll and Beef Udon noodles.

The only thing I missed out on was the 10% coupon, which you don't need to really enjoy as it was well worth the price. But with the gratuity added on to the bill, any little amount helps I guess.

I plan on going tonight and if anyone can please direct me to where to find this coupon, it would be greatly appreciated.

The link posted on this thread doesn't seem to work anymore.

Thanks all, happy eating!

Tenichi is the worst place for AYCE i've been to. I'd rather eat McDonalds with my 23 bucks than at Tenichi

really?

i went there tonite.

it was JAM packed. the place was crazy. we literally waited about 2 hours in line. ugh.

but once we got the food. amazing. every dish was really pretty good

and the dessert..some 'mango yogurt thing (looks like an egg) is DELICIOUS.i think i had about 5 of them.

their raw beef sushi roll was great too. great place.

The only sushi buffet place i went to was Wasabi (someone already mentioned - east of Steeles & Kennedy [Pacific Mall])
is like the first street after the railway crossing if you're going east on Steeles. :cheesygri

Be warned - they serve really slowly... (for lunch at least)

Anyone been to Yangs lately?

I don't really go to AYCE but mainly go to Japanese places downtown - in fact Yangs is the only AYCE I've been to - nothing special in terms of service or food.

Sushi Dragon
one on mavis and eglinton that I can't remember the name
