big YMMV here.

Technically newegg is a US store, I think then even ship from the states; unlike tigerdirect which ships from ontario - which even there futureshop often refuses to pricematch.

I would go for the new linksys linux n-router from NCIX instead.

Buy the WRT610N at CanadaComputers if you really want it for $170.

Dual band and dual radio WRT610N >> WRT160NL

I remember when these used to be $129 when they first came out last year. For some reason, the price is at $200+ now.

Its probably eaiser to PM staples and use a $20 off coupon, even though you'll get hit with the shipping charge, atleast you wont have such a hard time PMing staples.

For those who want good router performance (even better than the WRT610N! but lacking in some other areas) in terms of speed and range but don't need the storage port, the WRT400N (also dual band) is excellent for only $120.

The reason to get the WRT610 over the WRT400N is cause DD-WRT supports the 610N and there is no support for the 400N right now.

I fought with my 610 for a month before I got it working correctly (3 calls to tech suport later)

It's a decent unti, but don't expect it to work perfectly out of the box.

You'll also have to elevate it as it can get quite hot and quit operating properly (ie dropped connections)

To take advantage of the Dual band, you'll need to purchase either the dualband wireless card or USB network adapter. Both are on sale at Bestbuy.ca this week

I agree with the other person, i think you are referring too WRT310N, because i recall it was 179.99 when it first came out as well as i bought the WRT310N about a month before that came out and i bought it for ~129.99

No it is NOT the WRT160N or WRT310N, I bought a total of 5 linksys routers at the time and I know what I am talking about, I used to be a network admin, and usually don't get confuse about these things, I bought 3 WRT150N for $29.99 and 1 is broken, bought a WRT310N $89.99 that I still use, bought a WRT610N for $129.99, one of the WRT150N broke down and I had to send it back to Linksys for a replacement, I also tried out the D-Link routers but hated their software and I have DD-WRT loaded up on all my routers.

Ok you guys are spreading some wrong info

Dual band works like this

802.11 b/g are all run on 2.4ghz
802.11a runs on 5ghz only
802.11n can run on 2.4 or 5ghz

a dual mode, single radio unit will run on 2.4ghz OR 5ghz
NOT BOTH!
So if you have ANY b/g only gear you MUST run on 2.4ghz
if you only have 802.11n/a gear you should be able to run 5ghz
5ghz is better because it is much less crowded area of the spectrum. No portable phones or wireless cameras in that area (usually)

I believe there is some 802.11n gear that is 2.4ghz only out there as well. Its likely older draft-n ****. I personally will be investing in a dual radio unit. I have plently of older devices that are on 2.4ghz still (wii, psp, ps3) but I want maximum range and throughput on my laptops

As far as dd-wrt compatability goes, here is the chart of their website
http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Supported_Devices_802.11n

I was just looking at picking up this unit today and the last I read it has some uptime issues (3-7days before it reboots)
Their forum mentions disabling the N radio helps uptime.

Tough one to decide, I likely wouldnt run dd-wrt until its stable

I bought this router from FS the other day, price matched to canada computers at 159.99

Problem is the range, it won't reach to my study a couple rooms over. I can't move the router, and haven't found a good solution to extend the network. (Most affordable solutions are 802.11g only)

I think I'm going to go with the Airport Extreme (179.99 edu) and an Airport Express to spread the dual band n goodness everywhere.

Unless anyone on here has any other bright (cheaper) ideas?

This particular router cost more because it is a Simultaneous Dual-N Band.
My desktop is connected on the 5ghz and my laptop on the 2.4ghz right now.

Getting a Dual band solution isn't cheap in the beginning. I believe Airport express is the cheapest but speed isn't great with some review.

Try powerline ethernet, it *can* go up to 200Mbps. Since the speed is YMMV, I would recommend you get it and try it out.

http://www.staples.ca/ENG/Catalog/cat_sku.asp?CatIds=73%2C2798%2C2801,2808&webid=680267&affixedcode=WW, there are cheaper places like CC and NCIX (since their is no refund policy)

I bought this WRT610N few months ago... It's true that the router isn't good if it run both 2.4GHz and 5GHz...

However, it is stable as long as I used only 5GHz which satisfy my need for fast wireless network transfer...

I used the eko dd-wrt firmware... They release the new firmware like every couple of days... Now, my router is extremely stable, no reboot for 40 days... I don't bother to flash a new firmware...

For the lowest price... Few months ago, FutureShop usually on sale this WRT610N for $150... Some weeks, Future Shop has Friend and Family event sale with %15 off for networking device... People able to buy this router at the lowest price around... $150 - 15%off = $127.5
