Depending on your receiver, maybe. It's all about s/pdif dude. Either optical or coaxial will get you where you need to go.

My receiver can definitely do it. I just don't know what the sound card I need. Can I just use the line-out on my motherboard?

S/PDIF is the Yellow COAX plug beside the keyboard plug and the grey hatch plug beside that. These are both S/PDIF and is capable of carrying 5.1 to your receiver, does your motherboard have any of those?

I'm not sure if this will work, but if your onboard soundcard has 5.1 plugs like the pic here, you might be able to do 6 channel direct into the receiver using a lot of composite cables.

Thanks for the help.

My motherboard doesn't have it so looks like I'll be getting the sound card.

That sound card is $hit man! It does not have any digital outputs. Therefor, it's no good for a receiver. Get something with optical out such as the Auzentech Forte or Xonar series from Asus.

Do you know the brand and model of your motherboard? Your motherboard probably has S/PDIF output. My 6 year old comp has spdif over coaxial and every comp I've built since then has had digital audio outputs in one form or another.

The computer is an IBM Intellistation that I was going to give away but decided to install XBMC on and turn into an HTPC. It has onboard audio so I'm pretty sure it doesn't have the right output.

I'm trying not to spend much money on it because I plan to build a proper HTPC later this year. That's why I'm looking for the cheapest, capable sound card.
