Great find. Seems to be a good deal, never had a Sony BD player, are they good? Any idea if this is a recent model? Thx

It is the 2008/09 model. The 2009/10 model, s560 (coming soon) will replace this one. Other than cosmetic changes, the only difference on the newer model as far as I have heard is that it will have built in wifi.
I have a s350, model below, and it works great for what I need. $229 is a good price if you can find some stock.

I would recommend to get a PS3 if you're planning to get a bluray player.
It's future proof from all those addons like BD live and the up coming "built in wifi"...

You could make a case of that 2 years ago when an entry-level standalone player was over $500 easily; while the PS3 was under $500. These days, PS3 are not first choice if you sole purpose is to play Blu-ray.

Paid $299 last year, fast quiet player and very feature rich, good DVD playback as well. It is also Made in Japan. If you have a use, the analog 7.1 output is well worth of the little premium you would otherwise pay for a $100-150 lower-end player from Samsung or whoever.

I bought this in Jan/09 for $279 and it's a great player. I've had no issues so far with it.
This is a great price for this player, but i'd have to agree with a revious post. For what you get in a ps3 it's worth paying a little extra for it. It's wireless, plays games, plays blurays and divx (which i don't think the sony blu ray does) plus it has huge hard drive for movies/music which you can upload via usb.
I have a ps3 and actually think it's a better all round product, but if you just want a blu ray player and nothing more then get the S550.

Don't forget -- for those who need 7.1 analogue outs, the replacement BDP-S560 does not have them.

Is the s550 able to play back dvd-/+r discs?

I need those 7.1 analogue outs so my choices are fairly limited.
This is a good deal. But I need DivX support as well.

All DVD players can play back dvd-/+r discs. (except maybe the dvd players that came out previous to the release of DVD recorders in the late 1990's.)

thanks for all the advice.
I got a PS3 already, this would be a BD player for my parents, since they love movies alot. After reading the comments you guys have, I think it should be a good price for the stuff it provides. Will post a review later if this thread is still alive!

My first DVD player that I bought in early 2000 (Pioneer) would not play back DVD-/+R discs. Every one since then has with a minimum of DVD-R and most in the last couple of years with DVD+R D/L.
Thanks OP. I picked up one of these today.

The don't buy a Sony Blu-ray player.
I used to be an all-in-one type entertainment aficionado, but lately I've just been scooping up the deals and coming out way ahead. I mean, $99 for the WDTV and $135 for an LG BD300, to go with my $48 HD-DVD player, and I have no complaints and can play everything out there.

I have a PS3 and it's a great machine that does everything well. Lately, I've only use it to watch movies, but the damn thing makes so much fan noise, I've tried everything including placing it vertical on-top of my cabinet, I can't take it anymore, I want silence.
Looks like I'll be picking this baby up :)

I know what you mean. The reason why I got the S550 was because I was breaking my tv in with this dvd and I left the ps3 on for like 8 hrs and I think it overheated so I had to get it fixed by sony through warranty.
After that I decided to get the S550 strictly for movies.
Now that the break-in is done I don't need to have the ps3 on that long so I kind of regret it. lol

A bit off topic, but I also have a PS3 and have been disapointed with the fan noise when playing regular DVDs. There was a firmware update a while ago that set upscaling of DVDs on by default which required the fan to be on all the time. If you turn this off and let your TV do the upscaling, it will be quieter.
But the darn PS3 fan noise is the big reason why I bought this player instead of using the PS3. That, and the fact that this doesn't need a BlueTooth remote for it to work, so a Harmony remote will control this fine. And that will make my wife happy. ;)

Yep that's the main reason someone would buy this over the PS3--if they need analog outputs. Also given the price on the S360 is ridiculous, this is a much better purchase for a standalone BD player, except the fact that the S360 probably loads a good bit faster? (I know the S350 and S550 weren't all that quick at loading.)
However I'm shocked the S560 will not have analog outputs! That's really the main thing offered by the 5-series over the 3-sereies player.
First the 3-series dropped analog going from the S300 to the S350, now the 5-series won't have it either? What's the advantage of the S560 over the S360 then?
I guess after the S550s are all gone you'll be paying $1000+ for analog output on a Sony BD player because you'll have to get an ES

If you bought it yesterday online for $229 and chose ISPU then you will pay $229 + tax.

Sorry for the newb question, but if you have an HDMI-capable receiver, is there any need for the 7.1 analogue outs?
Is the set of analogues solely to accommodate older receivers without HDMI?

You are correct... there is no need (unless you have one of those cheap or early HDMI receivers that don't do audio over HDMI).

I guess the answer is no, it should be the on-board decoding. Below is what I found on a comparson and also explaination of 7.1 audio output.

Don't now if the deal is still alive, but I got mine unpacked and watch ~ 20 min of Transformers, just to see the quality of this BD player.
The picture is better compare to my ~1 yr older Samsung BD player, Colour is more vivid, and running a little smoother. As some of the other had mentioned, it's quiet when loading, compare to the BDP 1500 I had, it's alot more quiet. It has the decoders in the setting, Dolby, DTS. Sound is good, but not superior. This is what I see after the trial. Well it worths the $230 + tax.
