View Full Version : Fee waived on TD Visa Card?

Has anyone successfully got the fee on their TD Visa Card (Gold Elite) waived? I got this card during the free ipod offer a number of years ago.
I use it as my main credit card and pay the $99 fee. The only reason is because it comes with towing, etc (CAA like services). Instead of paying CAA for $130 (at that time) a year to cover me and my wife, I pay the $99 fee instead.
I tried my luck this morning and called TD Visa asking them to waive the fee, and they wouldn't budge at all. I was informed the only time they could waive the fee is when I have TD Select account. Is that true?
Any other alternative to my towing needs? Thanks.

that is true; you need the TD Select account. I was just charged but they reversed it when I told them I have the select account

I was trying to save some money here, RFD style :-) I have better use of $5K than sitting in an account doing nothing. And I do not need free banking service, I use my line of credit as my main account.
So no one has the $99 fee waived without the "select service"?

Maybe if you get mortgage with them or if you have a presidents account with TD Waterhouse?

Find another credit card with a similar reward scheme and a welcome bonus, and tell TD you're considering changing away for the welcome bonus. I got my Travel Infinite annual fee waived without Select Service by pointing out CIBC's 15,000 Aeroplan welcome bonus for new Aerogold customers. YMMV, as I also have a 25 year history with TD and make use of a full range of their services, which services I suggested might follow my choice of credit card to a new bank if CIBC made it worthwhile.

I've been banking with them for almost 16 years (since the canada trust day). I always give them the first priority whenever I need anything, mortgage, line of credit, etc, if the rate is the same or better than other banks. I currently have TD Visa, line of credit, checking account. My variable mortgage with CIBC is unbeatable.
I told the lady on the phone this morning that I'm going to cancel if you do not waive, and she continues reading the standard script. I'm surprised that TD now uses call centre in India. I spoke to two ladies this morning at TD, both have indian accent.

Considering the ethnic breakdown of Canada, do not be surprised if some people with such accents are still in Canada (although there is an Indian call centre). On a few occasions where I had to interact with a call centre and required a supervisor it didn't sound to me they had an Indian accent even though the first rep did.

I can't find any other cards that have towing service included. I guess I'm out of luck. Maybe for $100, this card is a good deal. Thx.

TD outsourced their services long ago. Having Indian accent is not crime.
My accounts are handled by Chinese lady in TD branch. Some of them have horrible accents. But as long as they resolve my issues no problem.
Looks like you missed column by Ellen in Toronto star.
Beside the Topic only people in Toronto can understand better than most in Canada. We have diverse population with their accents. Jamaican, Trinidad Indians, Indians,Italians, Spanish, East Europeans, Russians. Oh Forgot Latian American countries.
The young guys/girls in TD nowadays are very smart and helpful.
I know its way off topic but have a look at this article.

"I grew up having milk and Cheerios for breakfast like most other kids in my class. I watched Sesame Street on TV, celebrated Christmas, and received $2 from the tooth fairy every time a molar fell out.
No wonder I was confused when, at 22, I started my first "real" job in social services and walked into the lunchroom where co-workers asked me, "What do you eat for breakfast? ... I heard Indian people eat pita bread." I simply replied "milk and Cheerios." The co-workers looked both shocked and flabbergasted. "

I guess I am the same as you, we just want any issues we may have get resolved. I just said the lady I spoke with has Indian accent and read it off the standard script. I did not mean to offend anyone.

I find the TD Visa call center in particular to be the worst of the worst. I worked at TD's Easyline call center in the past and generally the people who worked on the TD Visa side were the ones who couldn't hack it in Easyline (servicing customers on one product line is easier than having to know all of 'em).
But back then the service was still pretty decent all around. Recent calls to the (alleged) Indian TD Visa call center have been horrible for me. All I called in for was to activate a new card (replacing an expired one) and before the ****ing rep would even to what I asked of her she read through her balance protection scripted solicitation numerous times (each time deferring to a "handling objections" script). I said no 3 times, until I finally interrupted her mid-script and said "look, first off I'm TD staff, 2nd off I will never ever ever need balance protection, so you are wasting your time when you could be soliciting another caller."
Getting back on topic though, no, you generally won't be able to get the fee waived unless you have a Select Serve account. You'll pay for that iPod! LOL

Get the Select Service a/c, then get the fee waived for that a/c:D Now THAT is doable.

Just a quick detour...
I have most of my accounts set up at TD.
ie.TFSA, GIC, VISA, Savings.
All amounting to more than $7k, can i qualify for the Select service, with a waived fee?
What i'm really after is the roadside service. I fear my car might leave me stranded soon, and would like to sign up for the $79 deluxe plan.
edit: I have a TD Classic Travel Visa btw.

You need to have $5K in the Select Service Chequing account alone and you may not fall below for a single day, otherwise you will get dinged $24.95 (Easyline might reverse it if you fell below for a single day). Your other Savings, GIC, TFSA don't count.

What's with the ignorance? You think that there are no English speaking individuals in Canada with Indian accents?
Seeing that you are in London, drive down York St, just past Adelaide and look at the TD building on your right. That is the call center you most likely spoke to. They also have another one in Markham I believe.

The main Visa call center used to be in London, actually. Maybe it still is. I suspect it was outsourced though. Easyline does outsource a fraction of calls (bill payments/transfers, the stuff people should be doing on the web themselves) to India, I suspect TD Visa does also (simple things like card activations and reading sales scripts).
