We're considering having an AC outlet for the kitchen island in our new home. This is for added convenience to use small appliances on this countertop area. I'm looking for ideas (like where to install), things to consider (eg. code), and possible cost (likely be done as an upgrade by the builder).
Thanks,

Is your Island going to be moveable or does it have a sink and being fastened down by the builder. We had our island free floating so we could position it where we found it best also this ensures builder finish's floor fully under it. Once you get used to it you will soon know where you use things and which side to put a plug. Do it after it is a simple task.

The model home had the island fixed in between a U-shaped kitchen. There is no water line. Am not sure I'd like to be moving it around as I think the layout is already optimum (ie I won't be able to move it around anyway where it won't impede kitchen traffic). I guesss we can do it after to find optimum spot but I will likely get an electrician (I'm not that handy with electrical wiring.) But I am also concerned how the outlet will "integrate" with the island cabinetry...

Sounds like it is a job to get done now with the builder.
Why not post a drawing of the layout and get some feedback on best spots to put a box.
If you have the places available I would put in more than one receptacle. Doubt the cost to get an upgrade would be that much more to put in the extra one. Even so sometimes little things like that are very worthwhile.
If you were handy at electrical work it would be an easy add-on but if not then get it done with the builder as an electrician will be looking for a couple hundred dollars just to come out and mess around with a small job.

It is now required by code to have an electrical outlet for the kitchen island. Make your builder aware of this and they should put it in for free.

My builder told me about the change in the building code and included it. This was a couple of months after I signed the purchase agreement.

Would you happen to have a copy of that code that you can either post or send via pm. I have a feeling that our island won't have an outlet, but it would certainly be handy.

Hmm.. can't seem to figure out how to post a pic.. there must be instructions somewhere here but I have not done this before on this forum...

I am interested in that new building code specifying the outlet in the kitchen island. Any additional info on the code will really help..

If your island is'nt secured to the floor then make damn sure it's in the right place before the builders install the outlet.

When our house was built, our island was not secured to the floor. I didn't actually realize this at the time. Once we moved in we discovered it was moveable and wanted to move the island slightly closer to the sink. This would have been fine except for the fact that when the drilled the hole from the basement up into the island to feed the power for the AC outlet, they did it right near the edge of the island. So we can't move it any closer towards the sink.

Your builder should not have passed the electrical inspection from what our electrician told us. If a line is run to the island we were advised code requires the Island to be fixed and immovable.

OP has indicated only one place for the island but IMO I would opt for it to be movable and would make sure after living with it before fastening it down.
