View Full Version : [Merged] Just saw a meteor hit the earth

I was coming home just now from the girlfriends and crossing a bidge which has the 407 under it and I noticed something bright cutting across the road. I looked closer thinking it was a fire work some one had shot off and noticed it was on fire and the fire was dying out the closer it got. Then it just went out on the other side off the road in some bushes.
I was tempted to pull over and look for it but was so excited I saw a meteor. I just googled it and they say about 10 meteor's are found which year which don't turn into dust when they hit earth..
Anyone else seen something like this?!

Yes I had time to grab my cell phone and snap a shot.
Although I did take some snap shots before going between two water spouts yesterday on Lake Erie

The wall of rain coming from the water spout on the left was insane when we had to go through it. The rain drops were the size of a toonie. Being only 200 yards from the spout itself was just freaky yet amazing at the same time

I don't doubt that you saw something, I do highly doubt it dropped just into the bushes though perception of distances is a funny thing.

I saw something similar while I was driving in Waterloo, I only saw it for maybe 2 seconds but it was travelling so fast with a white tail then when it went past the tree line it had kind of an orange flash...it was weird

Saw this as well while playing basketball outside with friends last night. It lit up the sky and even cp24 is reporting it. It was awesome.

last night (august 24) after the sun had set, i was just staring into space, and suddenly a magnificent flash and what appeared to be a comet-like shape was in the sky for a second, i swear it must have been a meteor. did anyone else see this??

It isn't an Unidentified Flying Object if he has already identified it as a meteor.

I saw it too. Was having a drink on the patio and I noticed a really bright flare. I was all the way in Richmond Hill though. It lasted about a second only but it was niceeee!

I was far more impressed with this

My brother was 20 minutes away and called me at 3am just to tell me the sky lit up. Mean while I was less than 10 minutes away and all I heard were the necklaces shaking against my girlfriend's wardrobe.

Unless you were in orbit above the Earth's atmosphere, you saw a meteorite hit the ground.
Or you thought you saw a meteorite - the mind is awesome at playing tricks.

Maybe it's too early for me but I don't quite get what you're trying to say here. So are you trying to say it wasn't a meterorite that we saw?
I saw it zoom across the sky. It never hit the ground from what I saw.

No, I believe the definition of a Meteor is one that is still in orbit, while a Meteorite is one which has entered our atmosphere. Or something like that.
Semantics, really.

I used to work overnight/outside in Scarborough last summer and I saw lots of random flashes.
Probably 5-6 over the two months. They were bright, and blue, and looked like a camera flash.
Never knew what they were.

I did see one bright flash yesterday or the day before (I forget). If it was yesterday, it would have been around 11pm. North-west from Toronto...

This thread has gotten very sidetracked but I'd like to chime in that I saw something as well...
It must have been around 8pm... I was lying in bed and I face north and all of a sudden I saw this green thing shoot across. It was fast and seemed to literally disappear. It seemed to head north.
At first I thought it might have been a firework someone shot off from their balcony or something but I heard nothing and it didn't really seem like one.
I thought I was crazy, mentioned it to my friend... but I'm glad others saw this! Now I REALLY wonder what it was....

Yes, my husband saw it just by chance, like you. He had just stepped out onto the deck and was looking up at the sky and out of the corner of his eye he saw something bright and turned quickly enough to see it. He said it was absolutely amazing. He's sure it was big enough to hit down somewhere but I can't seem to find anything in the news about it. Funny. We are from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Where were you when you saw it?

Go get it. The put it up here in BST. Actually, I think one fell in my back yard too... first $200 takes it, and I'll throw in some golf clubs to knock it around a bit. Tell your friends you have the newest MeteoriteProV1... it's too late for this.

I saw it too (I'm going to say it was around 9 pm). It just streaked across the sky for about a second or two (it seemed VERY low), then seemed to explode into a few small fragments, which then disappeared.
