So I just moved into a house that the owner lives in as well with his partner. Its shared everything, with 3 other roommates living here as well.
So recently he told me that he has a hidden camera(s) around the house to make sure nothing gets broken or stolen because there are so many people coming in and out of the house.
He wont tell me where it is but assures me that there is one(or possibly more) on the main floor.
There are none in my bedroom or bathroom.
Is this allowed? He never told me about it when I moved in.
If it is allowed, can he not tell me where it is.
It is his house, I have not signed a lease or any contract so basically I am just renting out the room so I have no real rights, so he could ultimately kick me out, but just curious about the situation.

sigh.... residential private property. Owner can claim it's for security purposes, which is perfectly legal. Otherwise, having a security system in a house by say ADT would be illegal.
Don't like it, rent another place.

Creepy, but the key is:
There are none in my bedroom or bathroom.
So I guess you havent got too much to worry about. Although I'd bet he's just bluffing hoping the threat of taped evidence will keep you guys on the straight and narrow.
Only one way to find out for sure!

The obvious solution is to call his bluff. Punch a hole in the wall somewhere, call him up, and challenge him to say what it is you did, and where. Or even better, don't do ANYTHING, but say you did do something, and see what he does.

It is his property, he can have cameras if he wants. No lease signed, he can kick you out whenever he wants, and you are free to leave whenever you want. I still think bathroom cameras would be illegal, but apparently isn't the problem.
Just look for the cameras, he could just be bluffing.

Kill the power to the house and go looking.
Alternatively, see if he was dumb enough to label the system in your fuse/breaker panel.

Like others said, you're just renting a room in his house and supposedly, there is no cameras in your bedroom or bathroom. You're not an actual tenant either if I understand you correctly. So living in that property with the owner there, he can do whatever he wants to his house.
Unless you're renting the entire house, that's different.
FYI - Hidden cameras today can be virtually undetectable to the naked eye. They can be inside an alarm clock, inside a power outlet, there's just lots of places you can place one. So best way to detect one is to buy yourself a hidden camera detector.
But in my opinion, I wouldn't bother living in a place like that. Honestly, I think he's bluffing though.

Yes, if you're not committing crime why NOT have a camera in your bed/bathroom monitored by the city either?
Why not let them search your bags at check points or have random inspections into your home to ensure your "ok"?

We're not talking about the 'city' monitoring anything in this case, and we're not talking about checking bags either.
a) It's private property, and b) he has a choice whether he lives there or not.
There's no lease or agreement holding him there.

Ok I made a bit of a jump but the idea a camera, ill intent or not, is OK in a rental property is pretty sketchy.
The OP can leave but it sounds like he already moved in before the owner "recently" told him about a camera. What if it happened to you? Still ok?

If I were in this situation, I would move out as soon as possible (if I could).
I wouldn't want a camera or cameras on me all day, even if I did nothing wrong.
Pretty creepy.

OP did not rent the area which is monitored by the camera. The monitored area is a common area. You are not supposed to be naked in a common area. Another sensitive area, bathroom, is not monitored as mentioned.
If you rent an apartment, your unit cannot be monitored but the common area such as elevator, gym, lobby can be monitored.

There's definitely a more affordable hidden camera detector somewhere (maybe at the same store) but I'm too lazy to look for it.
