I am looking at used cars and the one I am considering has rusted stone chips on the roof.
Other than that the car is clean - is this something to avoid?
Is it easy to repair myself - touch up paint possibly?
Would you repaint the entire roof for that?

I don't think you need to paint the entire roof for a few paint chips, if the chips are really deep and not possible to touch up, some bondo would do the trick, other than that the paint touch up should work

Chemical rust remover, prime, touch up. Or just have the roof refinished. Or buy a different car.

No used car is perfect - is this serious enough reason to look for a different car?

That's up to you. As you say it's tough if not impossible to find a car that's perfect. The question is whether you are willing to accept and/or repair the imperfections it comes with. I would say shop around at least, see what other offerings are like. If in the end you still think this is the best car for you then by all means buy it.

Was just wondering what would be involved in fixing this type of rust?
I read in some places that once a car starts to rust, it will always come back.
Also, if i were to take it to a professional place to get it fixed how much am i looking at and what would be involved?
Im also running into a similar problem where the person drove the car mainly on the highway, so there is a very small stone chip rust spot on the roof in two spots. I like the car, but would like to factor in the cost to fix the rust spots and whether it will come back within a year or not.
I just want the rust spots gone period
Forgot to mention its an '03 silver G35

ouch, old owner didn't take care of it. No protection what so ever left on it. Sand the rust off, prime it, then use touch up paint.

Rust is a mofo. If it is just limited to the surface then I think you can just remove the rust, primer it and put on some touch up paint, you might have to do this once a year to keep it at bay. If it gets past the surface, it will just spread no matter what you do.

Chemical rust remover, sand it a bit, then touch up paint with clear coat. Then get it wrapped in matte black vinyl for $180 :P
