Seems like a very good price for the 'sweet spot' current card. I'm going to hold on a few weeks though and see what the new ATI cards are going to bring in :)

Wow...135$...I remember drooling over it a year ago. But then again, I don't even have PCI-E :)

Great price on a HD 4870, but I still don't like those internal fans that just blow hot case air around - I much prefer the more expensive cards with the exhaust port.

yeah but then isnt that wat the case fan is for? blowing out hot air from inside the case?

Sure, but that's usually near the CPU and I use a low-RPM model to keep the noise low. With an OC Core i7, I hardly need anything else pumping hot air back into the case.

if your taking two of my slots up -- just blow the damn air out !!

i had a 4850 with a single slot design in my case for 15 minutes before i pulled it out

cpu temps on my fx 62 hit 50 on ldle and amost 70 when gaming - the card itself was in the 70s aswell.

currently i have

3870 x2 and a 3870 in trifire all with a air out the case

cards stay around 39 degrees at idle an under 60 on load.
cpu 30 idle under 60 on load

If you dont care about temps, then this is fine

You can change the idle frequencies of the 4870 to at least keep temperatures low when you're not playing games.

I leave mine at GPU/Mem 250/700. Plus with ATI tray tools, I force my fan to run at 20%. Temperature's at 45 degrees idle

I just built a system for my friend with an asus 4870 DK.

http://images.techtree.com/ttimages/story/94028_400--asus_4870_top_dk3d.jpg

It runs COOL. 41c idle and 63c under full load with low fan speeds. (furmark burn test). Maxes out at 55-56c gaming. Like the other poster said, if you have decent case cooling, exhaust on the card isn't an issue. His system only has a 120mm on the back and front.

If temps are so important why don't you open up your case? Problem solved.

Lol. Sorry this has to be a short post. I have to take my cat to the vet because it chewed on a power cable and stuck its nose into my cpu fan. :D

Who cares about temperatures, as long as your computer is stable at a satisfactory overclock... chances are you will swap it out before it burns out anyways.

This HD 4870 is a good deal, but I am personally waiting for the next generation, as the 4870 is not enough of an upgrade from my 8800GT.

That looks like a kick ass heatsink, worth prob 30 bucks by itself

Someone here needs a computer primer.

Replace "your computer" and "your XBOX 360" and you might understand where we're going here.

The blowout design is likely to have less cooling fin area, so the fan might have to turn faster compared with less directional designs.
I smell 3-slot.

Edit: Have to correct myself. Since I don't have a blowout card I had assumed the fan was centered over the chip module. This would indeed take away half the card space for heatsinks.
But the typical blowout have the fan moved to the front of the card, which leaves most of the card space for large heatsinks.

lol A friend of mine did this actually. Just placed his computer on a desk and laid the parts out flat. It never shorted or got dusty even. I don't the know the temps but he said it was very cool.

He a Physics major so he knows a thing or two about circuitry and electronics.

I have always run my computer open and I consider my place more dusty than average. Never has dust built up to the point of being detrimental to heat dissapation beyond that of even a well-ventilated closed computer case. Hell, even closed computer cases collect dust.

Unless you own hamsters, rabbits, children, snakes or bats there is very little reason to place your components into a closed box.

xbox 360 is like the size of an ITX case, packed with lots of hot components... probably got hot enough in there to melt the plastic! A lot different than a video card running somewhat hot with stock cooling... which is what I had my cards run at, a Voodoo3, Ti4200, 6600GT, 7800GTX... all these cards still work, but have now become obsolete, and sit collecting dust. Rapid turn over of technology is much more detrimental to the life of your electronics than heat.

my friend bought this deal but the heatsink it came with it does not match the website, it definitely look cheaper.
