This garage door opener is on sale at Sears for $299.99 from Sept 17 - Oct 4, 2009. It's a Craftsman model that's 3/4HP and belt driven. Go through the checkout procedure and add the $20 off $200 coupon (expires Sept 30)... (makes the cost $279.99 before tax)

With free pickup at a store or Sears catalogue outlet, the total cost comes out to $319.78 all-in ... a pretty sweet deal for a loaded garage door opener like this one.
Update: To confirm, I ordered it from the website (using the link above) and got product 18405 (same as the ad above). So it is a 3/4HP model even though it doesn't say on the website.
Update 2: The original coupon for $20 off expired, but thanks to another RFD member you can still get the deal for $290+tax ($10 more than previously)

Not sure if this is hot as I got a Liftmaster unit installed for $350 when I got my door replaced. It has the same features as this one.

I have had this unit since this time last year. Great GDO, no problems at all and super quiet. Keypad is wireless and works well.

In terms of warranty, for the Craftsman GDO's I've heard that Sears will send a tech to your house for issues. For LiftMaster/Chamberlain, they don't provide at home service.
Can someone confirm?

 I just went to the Rideau Centre Sears to 'see' the garage door opener I ordered online, and as I was looking at it a salesperson and a customer were discussing it, and the customer wanted to buy it. I butted in and told the customer that if he ordered it online that he'd save an extra $20 before tax. I gave the customer the info, and after he left to buy it online, the salesperson said "You just cost me a sale" and turned around to walk away. I went up to him and asked if he was on commission, and he said that it's not the point.

Although they are not on commission directly, I'm sure that there is some sort of incentive plan that is based on both the salesperson and the stores sales. You went to a store to see the physical unit, and it would not be there if stores couldn't sell them. By "butting in", you have cost a sale for that store, which makes it harder for them to stay in business.
As much as you would like to help another person get a better price, if you must, it is probably done better in a more discrete way.

I'm been reading the Costco Chamberlain GDO thread and came upon this one today. I'm a new home owner and was in the market for a GDO for a single garage. I ended up purchsaing the Craftsman 1/2 HP for $149 ($299 regular); can someone enlighten me as to the benefits of spending the $300 on this one? I know that it does come with more bells and whistles, but I can't justify the price when all I want is one that opens the garage, keeps it secure if I am away, and can be turned off when the power is out. I understand the warranty on the $299 is lifetime on the belt, and 10 years, but I can't see myself breaking one of these, unless they do break within that period of time?
Thanks in advance!

+1. the discounts for online is that there is a growing trend of cutting down staff and stores for a more online business. Although Brandon wanted to help, if everyone did that, the sales guy and others would not have jobs, and we would be seeing less brick and mortar stores. The sales guy was pretty reserved, because if it was me, i'd slap Brandon for taking my sale away :)

The sears.ca site is pretty short on useful info, here is a link to the US site with more specs (most importantly, the US site confirms that it has a safety sensor).

I see that salesperson frequently at the Rideau Centre location of Sears (I've been watching out for deals on stuff for my under construction new house). He's the same guy who didn't want to honour a sign marked price on a set of Craftsman wrenches I bought earlier this year... but I got his manager to accept the price.
And another reason I thought I'd help out with a better deal for that customer was that he works for the same organization I do (I don't personally know him as there are a ton of employees). He was wearing his building ID badge, and I guess we were both shopping during our lunch.

I assume that the 299 is chain instead of belt. The belt is more quiet than the chain model, and depending on the location of your garage it might be more benefitical. (For example if your bedroom is above the garage.)
Also this one has more power, but for even the typical double-door garage I believe 1/2 HP is good enough.

Benefits of the 3/4HP specific in the original post vs the 1/2HP model you bought:
quieter... belt drive is quieter and less vibration than chain drive units
i believe the lights are higher wattage (so brighter) ... the 3/4HP has 2 lights, not sure if the 1/2HP has 1 or 2
3/4HP is useful if you have a solid wood door, or another heavy type of door
battery backup allows you to operate the garage door opener when power is out

I've bought two of these in the past thanks to RFD. I paid a similar price about a year ago with sales and coupons. Goes together pretty straight forward, but you do need to buy a couple metal brackets if you have a finished ceiling in your garage.

thanks for the replies...another question - although the belt drive would be quieter, wouldn't this have a better chance of breaking? I'm thinking it like a timing belt in a car...those that have chained belts last a lifetime and don't need replacing.
Wattage on the lights, the feature of the backup battery, and extra HP are nice perks on the $299 GDO, but for the $149 GDO deal, would you guys consider that pretty good for what you get?

Well, the belts have lifetime warranty. And from looking around online, the belts generally don't have issues.
The GDO for $149 is a good deal if you don't need a wireless keypad. If you need one, I've seem some Craftsman and Chamberlain models with keypad included in the $170-80 range.

(For example if your bedroom is above the garage.)I got this model last year for $229, I believe. It is a belt drive. My kitchen is above my garage. From there, I mostly hear the metallic sounds of the door opening and the motor sounds. I would hate to think how much extra noise a chain drive would add.
I haven't had to use the back-up battery yet so I can't comment on it. Otherwise, the remote keypad and motor have worked fine through the winter. My only quibble is that the thermometer on the control panel doesn't display the true temperature of the garage. The thermometer must be either inside the unit or facing the inside of the wall...

I'm trying to figure out if this unit is really any better than the comparable unit that Costco is now selling for $299. For the extra $20, the warranty seems to be better (Costco is lifetime motor and 10 year belt, 1 year all else, while Sears is apparently 10 year motor and 90 days everything else). Anything I'm missing here?
Thanks.

Bought a simiar model before and installed it myself. It was not as easy as I thought only because our garage is older and needed to install extra brackets and stuff. Also removing the olde garage door opener was a pain because it was so poorly installed. If you have a new house it's not hard to do as it's designed well for a garage door opener. However I probably would not do it again, and definitely not on my garage haha.

I'm pretty sure I remember the box saying lifetime warranty on the belt for this model. But I'm not sure about the other coverage.

I can confirm that this model has lifetime warranty on the belt and 10 years on the motor. It's written right on the box.
I was looking for the part stating 3/4HP and never found it on the box, nor on the website. Although it says on the box that it's good for doors up to 18 feet.

I'm pretty sure I read it on the box. And Sears doesn't have any 1/2HP belt driven units with battery backup.
Here's the ad for the same garage door opener:
http://www.eflyer.sears.ca/FSI/Ad.aspx?advid=200472&loc=52947&fsi=12212&version=OP_OT_OE_ON_NE&facing=false&pagenum=38&adid=6992514
I'm not sure why the numbers don't match up, but the original price and sale price are the same. They also look exactly the same too. You can always just order using the order number from the Sears ad.
I can confirm in a few days anyway, my expected pickup date at my local catalogue location is Sept 24.

The numbers do match up with the ad as the part number on the box is 18405.
So I think it's safe to assume it's 3/4HP

I just picked mine up from my local Sears catalogue retailers (there were 5x of the $149.99 GDO's and 3x the $279.99 models that were ordered by customers and ready for pickup).
In addition to the stuff I listed in my original post, it also comes with the door protection sensors (door won't close if something blocks the sensor).
And to confirm, there is a 1yr comprehensive warranty (including labour) that includes in-home service by a Sears technician. As well, the motor is covered by a 10yr parts warranty (labour extra) and the belt is covered for lifetime (labour extra).

Hmmm maybe I should do this. I bought both the Costco and Sears models, they're both sitting in my basement as I decide which to keep. How easy was it to price match? (I'm guessing it's YMMV since it's Costco)

I had no problem but I'm sure YMMV. Although the Costco ad has no model number, the cashier looked at both descriptions and was satisfied with no hassles. The other benefit vs. Costco is that I was able to arrange for installation there too, HD price was actually more competitive than garage door installers (surprising since HD sub-contracts)-installation cost was $115 + tax.

Is it just me or does Craftsman door openers get **** ratings?
Our Craftsman 1/2hp unit broke a little less than 4 years. Stupid lights stopped working 2 years in and it only opens the door half way now. Paid a guy to fix it.. same ****.
By comparison, our previous Stanley unit lasted for 14 years. It decided to open the door by itself.

hahaha... I had the same experience with my Stanley unit as well. 15+-yrs and still was chugging along, but the door would open by itself. I have way too much stuff in my Garage to risk theft, so replaced them with the 3/4 HP, belt, Craftsman. Had them for about 1 year and I love them. Super quiet.
