Was at the Black's superstore yesterday looking at some Nikon lenses, and noticed that most of them are on clearance (all new in box). There were some pretty good deals!

The ones I can remember off hand:

16-85mm VR for $599.99 ($720 at Aden)
70-200 f/2.8 for $1699.99 ($1910 at Aden)

They had both zooms and primes on sale, mostly discounted between $50-100. Higher end lenses had discounts up to $420 (on the 70-200). There were at least 3-4 gold ring lenses there, but I forgot which they were. All or most were discounted.

The 16-85 seemed to be a great deal in particular, and I picked one up today. The price at B&H for a grey market 16-85 is US$610! I asked the salesperson about remaining stock, and was told that they had about 10 or so 16-85s left (not sure about other lenses).

If you need a lens, you should take a look! The clearance is supposed to last as long as they have stock according to the sign.

wow, that's amazing!!
do you recall if there's a sale on the 35mm f/1.8 prime?
this sounds too great to be true!!

The 35mm f/1.8 was in stock, but I dont recall if it was on clearance or not. Seeing as most lenses they had were discounted, I would at least go check it out.

Oh yeah - after I saw the 16-85 for $600 at Black's, I went up the street to Aden to check their price. After the salesperson saw that I was iffy, she asked where else I had gone. She wouldnt believe that Black's had it for $600, and asked another employee to check the price on their website. It was still $750 (Black's regular price), so they thought I was crazy.

However, the other employee did say that "if Black's has it for $600, get it". Ha!

Blacks also has the Canon 70-200 f2.8L IS for $1899. It's cheaper than the US and even Aden at $2035.

I wish I had the flow to pick it up.

That's a great find OP!

Awesome price for the 70-200 and its exactly what I'm looking for but... I just bought the D300S last week and I can't afford to buy a $1700 lens that quickly even if it's a hot hot price >.<

Everyone who has a 14-24 seems to love it... it's one of Nikon's best lenses. Why are you getting rid of yours?

a)hardly use it
b) for the stuff i shoot esp in the summer, the fact that there's no filter available for it bugs me
c) distortion at 14 is a pita.

went there today to check out this clearance sale - the two lenses that OP mentioned are the ones that are the "best" deals.

Everything else are similarily priced compared to Aden.

Damn, I just got a 14-24 on the weekend. I wonder if that's on sale. Or maybe I'll do the 17-35 thing, as well.

my theory is that Blacks is getting out of the high end camera...many of the B&M stores seem to be getting rid of the multiple camera displays and only saving 1 or 2 for the P&S.

but that's a guess...could be Telus dictating changes

I didn't know Blacks stocked any of these lenses. Must be a Toronto only thing? Most of the Ottawa stores are tiny and they only sell the lower/common stuff.

I think so, but wouldn't have paid attention so could well be wrong.

The only other lens I know for sure was on sale there was the 80-400.

Yes, that's a great price considering I see used copies listed for more than that all the time.

The prices online didnt reflect the downtown sale when I looked, either. In-store is the best place to confirm.

Question guys - I'm considering buying the 18-200mm, and blacks has it for 599. Is tht a good price? Or could I get it for better buying used?

Thanks for ur advice!

If you assume that Aden is more or less the cheapest source for lenses in Toronto, then you would be saving $120. So yes, it is cheap.

The 18-200 usually sells used for more than 599.

I've checked there today and they have some very good deal... 85mm1.8 for $399, 17-55mm2.8 for 1449, and 14-24mm for 1700. btw, i think the 18-200 they are selling for 699, not 599. Maybe someone wants the new version as Aden has it on sale for only 779

You sure about that ? I was there on Thursday and was told they do not carry the 14-24. If so, that's a pretty good price. I paid $2K for one last week, and if it wasn't a PITA to return it on my wife's card, would have done so and picked it up at Black's instead.

Aden's been selling the 17-55 f/2.8 for $1420 for over a month now and Henry's will price-match :)

yes, I was there on Friday, and the girl try to sell me the 14-24. They put it in the showcase with no price tag on it, and she told me that this is the biggest discount one, from 2199 to 1699

Just picked up the last 85mm 1.8d they had in stock. $399.99, I thought it was a good deal. Even used ones cost around that price.

I saw the nikkor 12-24, $850, its a darn good price for that. I paid $940 about a month ago for this lens @ henry's, by price matching aden. If I didn't have a 12-24 already, I'd would definitely take the one they have in stock.

16-85 $599. I also saw an 18-70, don't remember the price though. 80-400, $13xx somewhere around there. If you are looking for a nikon lens, I would suggest you call to see what lenses they have on clearance.

btw, there are no 85 1.4 on clearance, I already asked.

I know that this has come up before but there's no real definitive answer..

16-85mm or the 18-200mm?

With the new more expensive 18-200mm VRII the price difference now widens to make more sense to get the 16-85mm..

Thom Hogan has a nice article that might help your decision: http://www.bythom.com/nikon-dx-lens-summary.htm

I was seriously considering the 18-200 for a while, but ended up with the 16-85 after reading that article above and Thom's reviews on both lenses. Photozone.de also has some good reviews that helped my decision.

Yea, it comes down to whether you want the versatility of never having to change lenses or if you want consistent quality... I've tried the 16-85 and I was very impressed by how consistent it performed across its entire zoom range. With the exception of the non-constant aperture, the 16-85 is just as sharp as the 17-55 f/2.8 that costs nearly twice as much and also has as little distortion as the more expensive zoom.
