This is a insane deal for webhosting:

http://dreamhost.com/limited-time-sale-going-on-now.html

"Sign up today for a risk-free trial of a one-year hosting plan using the promotional code "777" and you'll get an entire year of web hosting (including a domain registration) for just $9.24! That's 92% off our normal pricing!"

http://imgurl.filetac.com/img/54537130.png

It also says it is for new customers only.

How much is it after the first year and can you easily transfer domain to another hosting?

I've hosted with them after the first year and I am satisfied with their service. Possibly because I didn't want to move my blog and deal with re-config problems.

I dont mind the unlimited space and transfer as well. Support has been awesome as well, I've had their tech go into my blog config files and figure out 'My' mistake.

$10.95/month and yes you can transfer to another host as well.

On that note, any other viable options for hosting besides dreamhost?

I still remember when i signed up for a similar deal last year but until today I still haven't used it LOL.
Maybe that's how they can afford doing this promo once in a while?

The catch is that this is a one-year price, and it jumps to $120 next year.

Also, if you actually tried to use any significant fraction of the capacity offered, they would limit you or cut you off. For example, technically your web space and bandwidth on Dreamhost is to be used for serving html pages only - other uses such as file storage or media streaming not supported.

This is dead isn't it?

I realize that the coupon says only valid until the 13th but when I put it in during registration it seemed to still be working, saying I would be saving $110 and something.

Now when I go to billing it says I'll be paying the regular 9.95 per month?

EDIT: Nevermind, looks like it when through like it was supposed to and I'm set up for 9.24 for the year. Thanks OP for the sick deal!

cool deal, I just ended my $10 for a year with netfirms and they tried to charge my CC for another year for over $100 will this site try to do the same thing or after the year they just cut you off?

I even e-mailed netfirms telling them I didn't want to keep my sites and if I Needed to do anything to cancel and they never got back to me.

Now really, everyone knows $9/yr isnt their NORMAL price and you wouldnt expect it to continue at that price.

Dreamhost is one of those most notorious for this. But that being said, you contact them and tell them you dont want to renew after the first year.. get something in some sort of email so you have backup proof and enjoy it.

Sounds like u just forgot about the AutoRenew after contacting em the first time.

Dreamhost saves your credit card information and sets AutoRenew on when you register, so you will be billed $120 automatically next year unless you go to their control panel and turn off AutoRenew. This is a bit of a shady practice on their part, and I'm sure they do it deliberately knowing that many people don't intend to renew. But you're fine if you turn off AutoRenew - they will email you an invoice and you can pay it manually.

Dreamhost isn't that bad compared to some others. They do oversell their capacity with fake offers of huge storage and bandwidth that they have no intention of delivering, like all the cheap web hosting services, and their control panel sucks. But their support is better than some.

I have been using Dreamhost for years. They are very reliable, friendly, good and very cheap (with tons of included bonuses). I have never come even close to my maximum bandwidth on their lowest plan.
They have a great referral program. If you refer 1 person you get something like $97 credit towards your next year.

netfirms and dreamhost both automatically charge you the next year.. i tried to cancel the netfirms account since i was satisfied with dreamhost and actually plan on staying with them after the first year so contacted netfirms and asked them to cancel and they asked me to call them to cancel it .. so i tried calling only to stay on hold for over half an hour (just giving me another reason to cancel) and than the line cut off so i got pissed off and i just changed my credit card info on the account to a fake number so when the time came to auto renew, the transaction failed so now they had to contact me and i just told the guy that i already notified you guys that i wanted to cancel my hosting ..

Assuming you mean Dreamhost, you can turn off Auto Renew online. As several people here have mentioned previously, they aren't very forthcoming about it because they want you to pay for another year at full price.

Don't worry, they've got these kinda sales on all the time.
Last year there was like a 3-year / $10 deal on boxing day. Pretty fresh :D

I think that this deal is alive again ("Veteran's Day Sale") and expires tonight at midnight. However, I'm now at the credit card information screen and haven't seen any place to enter this promotional code.

I see that it says "Not Available In All Regions," so perhaps this sale doesn't apply to Canadians...

My first host was dreamhost, but I switched after the first year since the price jumps to >$100/year. Switching hosts is a mega PITA and I don't recommend it. Just sign up with the host you are going to stay with.

If you want a no-hassle host with reasonable rates that stay the same year after year, try HostPC.com

For low-usage users, they have a plan that starts at $14/year. After you open an account with HostPC, you lock in your price for life. So even if the rate for your account type increases in the future, your signup rate stays the same. I've been with them for some 4 years now I think and I host 6 domains with them.

There customer service is really very good. The owner of the company is heavily involved in customer support and often times you will be helped directly by him. They have an IRC channel with live support if you are inpatient, and they also have a support ticket system that is very quick.

For a no BS host, I recommend HostPC.

Switching hosts could be done in a few minutes ... [snap] just like that. Perhaps you could elaborate a bit on your particular case.

There's a few reasons why switching hosts could be a PITA:

1. Hosting companies like Dreamhost also include your domain registration, so it's actually switching the domain registrar that's a PITA (as usual).

2. If you have dumped a bunch of stuff on the web host over a long period of time and didn't back it up elsewhere, it can take a long time and a lot of interrupted FTP sessions to download it and re-upload it to a new host (or transfer it directly if the new host supports that).

3. If you took advantage of optional features of the web host like email forwarding, SQL databases, mailing lists, or transaction processing apps, it can take some time and debugging to get them working the same way on a new web host.

As for Dreamhost's automatic annual renewal, you can turn it off on their control panel. Just make sure you do that immediately after registering with them, and they will email you plenty of notices when your annual renewal is due.

Switching hosts doesn't necessarily ... actually SHOULDN'T involve switching registrars. That is also why separating the two (domain registration and web hosting) is a smart move. Even for DreamHost, you DON'T need to switch registrars. Keep your domain registration there, or transfer away *any time*.

2. If you have dumped a bunch of stuff on the web host over a long period of time and didn't back it up elsewhere, it can take a long time and a lot of interrupted FTP sessions to download it and re-upload it to a new host (or transfer it directly if the new host supports that).
Sadly, backing up your files regularly is something that most people learn only after a DISASTER. Moreover, if you have TONS of files (for whatever reason) AND don't back up regularly, then the trouble is simply in the making. But to be honest, most websites don't need those tons of files to run, do they?

3. If you took advantage of optional features of the web host like email forwarding, SQL databases, mailing lists, or transaction processing apps, it can take some time and debugging to get them working the same way on a new web host.
I agree that databases and/or web apps are more complicated and require more attention; but then again, if you run such websites, you should already have well prepared with regular backups and a "disaster plan" of some kind (in other words, always be ready to move on short notice).

just as a word of warning, i jumped on this deal a few years back and had quite a few issues with dreamhost. at one point they even billed me (their mistake) for a full year well before my renewal time. within a few days they had returned the money to my credit card, but the dollar had dropped in value and their mistake ended up costing me money. i emailed them regarding this and never heard back. when my year was nearing the end, i tried switching my domain to another registrar and it was impossible. no support from their side at all. i had to let the domains lapse and then grab them again. now, almost two years after i was with them i still get their newsletter even though i've asked them a few times to remove me from their list.

buyer beware, you really do get what you pay for.:!:
