Like the above poster above me said, also the 1.5tb and the passport elite 500g have different applications - passport elite is a portable drive that does not require an external power supply; the 1.5tb drive does

But they appear to be Best Buy "exclusive". Is there any configuration difference between them and the Costco model or those I buy elsewhere (like Tiger Direct)?

They don't sell a whole lot of them at the moment, because while being 2.5" platters, they're actually 12.5mm thick drives, which don't fit into laptops (they're made specially for portable drives. I think they might fit in a mac mini too).

So by the time 9mm thick 1TB drives are cheap, they'll be like buying a 500GB drive now, it costs about the same to buy it in a case as opposed to buying the case and drive separately. And most likely 2TB drives will only be available prepackaged in 2.5" cases with a premium and you'll be able to buy a 4TB drive in a 3.5" case for about the same as the 1TB drives :cheesygri

i agree. you might ask the guy to just take his computer, more functionalty lugging 25 lbs around. he probably wouldn't mind using a 2000 ft extension cord.

Yuck... Personally, I'd stay away from Seagate drives. I've had too many of them fail on me in the past. I'd actually pay the extra $20 for the WD My Passport Elite 500GB drive. The studio is better because it has Firewire 400/800, especially if you have a Mac.

I've boguht a few things from sig and they were all brand new and sealed, theses external hard drives should be brand new because I was in the store the other day and they look sealed and in their plastic box

I've bought some LaCie rugged drives from Sig in the past and they were retail sealed (not refurbished).
