Like the above poster above me said, also the 1.5tb and the passport elite 500g have different applications - passport elite is a portable drive that does not require an external power supply; the 1.5tb drive does

The blue one is the new style/ model. They have software that you cannot get rid of. Also, it has a virtual drive that autoplays when connected. Nuisance!!!

So the older models (first 2 that I listed) are better?

But they appear to be Best Buy "exclusive". Is there any configuration difference between them and the Costco model or those I buy elsewhere (like Tiger Direct)?

I am waiting for the 1TB 2.5" HD and will do it myself by purchasing a case for 2.5" HD, rather than buying it like this. You end up with a lower cost overall + you get to choose what HD and case you want.

WD has a 1TB 2.5" HD, but at $300. Too much.

The one at my costco isn't silver. Much more of a champagne color.

They don't sell a whole lot of them at the moment, because while being 2.5" platters, they're actually 12.5mm thick drives, which don't fit into laptops (they're made specially for portable drives. I think they might fit in a mac mini too).

So by the time 9mm thick 1TB drives are cheap, they'll be like buying a 500GB drive now, it costs about the same to buy it in a case as opposed to buying the case and drive separately. And most likely 2TB drives will only be available prepackaged in 2.5" cases with a premium and you'll be able to buy a 4TB drive in a 3.5" case for about the same as the 1TB drives :cheesygri

i agree. you might ask the guy to just take his computer, more functionalty lugging 25 lbs around. he probably wouldn't mind using a 2000 ft extension cord.

http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=35177&vpn=ST9500325AS&manufacture=Seagate&promoid=1192

$98.98 + shipping.

$106.96 to $116.96 + taxes depending where you are in the country.

Less shipping if you add a $2 filler to get the $3 Ground Shipping using Code: OSP101609. So $103.98 + tax.

Just a thought if you want to save $20 .

Yuck... Personally, I'd stay away from Seagate drives. I've had too many of them fail on me in the past. I'd actually pay the extra $20 for the WD My Passport Elite 500GB drive. BTW... if you buy the drive from BB today, you can still use the $10 off coupon(expires today). I ordered one for $119 plus tax last night.

This price is OK by historical standards, but the prices of OEM 500GB 5400RPM 2.5" drives has come down so much lately ($90 or even a little less on sales) that $125 is higher than you should pay for an item like this.

Yup, picked one up today. Decent price for the elite, comes with a 5 year warranty so a bit better peace of mind than others with a 1 or 2 year warranty.

Picked up the Western Digital 500GB My Passport™ Studio™ (http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0926INGFS10120329&catid=26259) (Model: WDMT5000TN) from BB tonight for $109.99 + taxes... (for some reason BB's website says that it's a 3.5" drive but it's technically 2.5" i think...
their regular price on it is $199.99 so i got them to PM SiG's sale.

Seems like a decent drive so far, very quiet, can't even hear it and it's on my desk in front of me.

Cool thing is it's got firewire along with usb 2.0 and comes with the same warranty as the Elite series (5 years)

maybe i'm missing something, but wouldnt it be cheaper to buy a 2.5" 500GB drive for ~$90 from place like CC, and then a cheap simple enclosure for it?
