Alternative to Home phone

My family has Rogers Home phone but nobody really calls(rarely). I hating paying for something I am not using. I have a cell phone but its better if I have home phone.

Is there any other alternative? I heard about MagicJacks, what is your input on these..

Thanks guys

MagicJacks required you have internet at home...

If you have internet at home then try to register for a free phone number for life at www.freephoneline.ca

If you like it, you can buy $50 SIP configuration file + VOIP adapter and you can replace your home phone.

If you have iPhone + data plan, you can use the SIP configuration file for your iPhone and use it to talk via VOIP from your iPhone too...

Is there an alternative to home phone for apartment dwellers equipped with security? A way for security to connect a line but not have to pay typical phone fees from Rogers, Bell etc.? Or a real cheap home (non-DSL internet, though) phone service with no features or extra fees on top?

you can have your internet line bypass the security system. the bell tech knows how to do this.
