My cousin's in Grade 8 and high school registration is coming up soon.

We're looking at:

- R.H. King Academy
- Albert Campbell CI
- Wilfrid Laurier CI

Are these the best schools in Scarborough? Are there better schools? Input from current students or alumni would be especially appreciated.

seems kind of weird that the 3 that you are mentioning are in pretty different areas.. i remember when i was going to highschool from elementary school that you had a set highschool u had to go to and u had to come up with a good reason why u wanted to go to a different one.. guess things have changed?

I would choose the school that has the most variety. I'm in an art program in college and the kids that went to an artsy highschool are steps ahead of me.. My art class in highschool was a joke, just an easy credit.. Give him options (art, sports, shop class, etc.) so he can explore and see what he wants to pursue later on in life...

the basics like English, Math, and Science are prolly the same everywhere...

Yes, you are still assigned to a designated home high school. However, I believe someone is able to attend a high school that is not their home high school if they are applying to be in a specialized program like TOPS at Marc Garneau, IB at Weston CI and Vic Park, Arts at Etobicoke and Earl Haig, athletics at Birchmount and Northview or maybe because of residency restrictions like Earl Haig.

The trick is to go to a good school for the first 2 years and transfer to the easiest ghetto school out there while and do supplementary courses for the maths + science (if you're doing that)

That way, marks are high but you get all the knowledge.

It's quite irrelevant which high school you attend.

RH king is even in the consideration versus those two? The stabbings have that much allure?

I went to laurier for a year, its decent, I went to DMCI before that which was a way better school. My cuzins went to laurier, they all went/will goto good unis.

But like I remember when I was at laurier only 3-5 of us wrote the euclid. While I think like 40-60 ppl at DMCI did.

I would say Albert Campelll if you like the environment is much better academically than the other 2.

+1.

actually if you try to go to a good high school, your actually risking the chance of getting harder teachers because logically a good school with smarter kids will put pressure on teachers to be harder.

but EVERYONE here knows highschool is a joke.

but no who ever told you laurier is a good is stupid. actually whoever told you there are good public schools in scarborough for that matter.

And they have a good robotics team

That's true, Team 188 is pretty good at what they do and they have great mentors too. The Programming Enrichment Group at Woburn is one of the top programming clubs across the country. Some of the team members there right now are easily the best in their age group.

Don't forget that spots are given to student's that live in the area first. So you may not get in to a school that is outside of your area.

Albert Campbell had a good rep. in the 90s - how is it now?

There actually is a Wilfrid Laurier Collegiate, in Guildwood. That's an upper-middle class area so I would assume the school is good too

And there were stabbings in R.H. King? When? It's the top school in Scarborough according to the Fraser Institute, and it won the Order of Excellence Award from the National Quality Institute. King is a uniform school and didn't parents used to queue outside overnight to enroll their kids?

Wow I can't believe people discount the importance of highschool selection. Like university, highschool shapes your character. You can't tell me kids from York Mills, Forest Hill, Northern are no better off from those in Leacock, or whatever other fine schools Scarborough offers.

With that said I have on idea which schools are good in Scarborough...although I live in Scarb, I wouldn't recommend a high school here except... maybe Birchmount Park for their athletics.

Yorkmills, Leaside, Earl Haig isn't too far from Scarborough OP, can your cousin go there?

I would say; go to a school that has your choice of ideal programs. If there are any specialized programs to your liking, go for that one specifically. Otherwise any other high school will do but keep in mind as others have said, if you go to a school with some kind of reputable academics, they are gonna expect more from and and hence, tougher marking.

certain high schools can give you an advantage. not many of these exist in the public system though. for example, Upper Canada certainly will give you a boost in the future.

Albert Campbell CI used to be a good hs, but based on what I heard from people, the school went down hill after I graduated a few years ago.

I was even reading one of those Ontario HS reviews. The year I graduated, the hs had a 7.1(out of 10 rating) overall. The next few years, their rating hovered around 5.9, which was pretty sad for what I thought was a pretty good high school academically. Must be all the slackers and wanna-be gangsters there bringing the school down.

All that matters is that the school offers the programs you're planning to take. Otherwise all the material in all schools is the same. The so called "good" schools teach the same stuff, but there is probably greater competition. I heard Satec is good especially if you're into technology related stuff.

Forget about Earl Haig, unless the kid is applying for the arts program or has to move within the residency restrictions.

"Friends don't let friends go to York"

They actually sell t-shirts like that in universities other than York of course.

why not go for a catholic secondary school? like pope john paul II C.S.S. it's the only international baccalaureate school in the whole gta, it's my second year at pope and it's going well. or try mary ward c.s.s. it's a self directed school though.

It doesn't matter how amazing your high school is, if you fall into the wrong crowd, you'd still end up flipping burgers at 45 years old.

I know someone who didn't get into Earl Haig because it was full and got shipped off to the crappy high school near Peanut Plaza (lots of shootings, stabbings etc). He got into the 95% minimum program at our university and is still doing spectacularly now at his full time job at a fantastic company.

Though I agree with you, tell that to the people who failed the literacy test! I find it hard to believe that the schools have allowed students to advance to higher grades when they do not know the basics of spelling, grammar, syntax, and reading comprehension in the English language.

No offense to ACCI alumni, but ACCI is garbage don't go there. If you have to go to a school in that area go to ACI instead. Their sports teams are garbage, but the Academia and Extra Curricular is pretty decent. The students at ACI are focused, generally speaking. It's a good school to go to and I recommend it if you want to attain a good mark and foster good habits. Also top 100 in the Ontario rankings, but the rankings are meaningless unless the school you're in is top 25. I know a lot of students from ACCI, and they're not the worst bunch and I can't say for all the students, but man they lack so much vision for themselves. Some of them do achieve decently high academic scores but their personalities/mindset are so garbage IMO.

Like I said though, this doesn't go for everyone that attends ACI and it's still better than a lot of other high schools I know. Perhaps the student body and environment has changed since then. Just my experience with ACCI is horrible.

P.S. There was a school in Markham that was #1 in Ontario, think it was MAC?

Okay, I have a few points to make.

Firstly, I would like to stress that the selection of a certain high school over another IS NOT significant enough if the selection causes more stress, whether it is work or transportation, etc.

No matter what path your child takes, they will be able to do it successfully regardless of the school.

I personally, went to Albert Campbell and graduated this past year. I definitely think Campbell provided me with a good learning atmosphere as the people around you make you want to succeed. Then again, there have been issues recently about either kids slacking off or simply not having the same yearning for knowledge like in years past.

I can't speak for the other schools but Campbell isn't as bad as it is perceived, but then again, I just graduated so there might a shift in the school.

My Advice:
Go to the school that's nearest to you. Not only will you be close to family, you will be close to the friends that you've known for the past few years. If that's not the case, I would still pick the closest school for convenience. There will be plenty of times where students have to go home during lunch or make a quick stop if they forget something at home. No reason to make it harder then it actually is.

I personally had this debate when I was in grade 8. I was choosing between Campbell and Bethune. I initially thought I wanted to go to Bethune because a lot of people I knew in grade 8 were going there. However, I ended up choosing Campbell because it was closer and I am 100% glad that I did.

Take this all with a grain of salt. Every student has different experiences. Choose one that they'll be comfortable with.

Agincorut C.I. has an amazing music program. Their math program is also fabulous. The school has steered out of trouble for some time. There really isn't enough space for students to become badly influenced. If you're worried about the kid getting mixed with the bad crowd...Agincourt really never has many 'bad crowds.'

I'm an ACI alumnus so I may be biased but ACI is definitely a good school. Almost all the students are driven and want to learn. The teachers are very good and the good ones really prepared me for University. ACI is definitely a well rounded high school. Good academics, arts and athletics.
