View Full Version : [Merged] Cookie Crisp now in Canada!

Today is a new day for all those that used to stock up on Cookie Crisp when they went to the states. My friend just told me they got a shipment of Cookie Crisp at Costco (here in the GTA at least. I'm not sure about anywhere else).

I'm really not much of a sugary cereal guy myself. I always preferred Rice Crispy, Corn Flakes, and no Kashi cereal. but Cookie Crisp is the one exception to the rule. It's like dessert for me.

The bulk size box is only $7.50. Keep an eye out for it to be on the Costco floor soon.

I used to just mush up chocolate cookies in milk, before even seeing Cookie Crisp in Buffalo.

Somehow, i still think their version is unhealthier.

for all those who haven't tried it, I thought the same thing. like I said in my OP, I've never been one for sugary cereals, and the thought of little cookies was not appealing. but then some friends and I went to the states, and they all grabbed a couple of boxes. I figured I'd grab one just for the hell of it, because they didn't have it in canada. Got back home, poured me some milk, and found it to be a great little snack. I still wouldn't eat TONS of it, but I definitely had a craving for it every now and then.

anyways, it's always one of those things that show up when people talk about the things they have in the states, that you can't get in canada. Cookie Crisp, Apple Jacks, Yoo Hoo, etc...

I always looked forward to eating this when I visited my cousins in the US. After bringing a few boxes back to Canada I always had to be very stingy with my portions in order for each box to last the longest.

Those days are gone because Cookie Crisp is finally in Canada.

I hope they start playing the commercials!

I believe Ancaster Costco had it - I know I tried a sample of it somewhere last week and I think it was there. I wasn't a huge fan. However the Super Walmart in Ancaster also had Apple Jacks back - and that I bought :)

why do they have to decrease it? They can just do what all the other cereal companies do, print out a lower serving size (just like potato chips). The serving sizes are getting really small. Check it out.

Okay, I confirm I saw it too at the Costco on Markham and 14th Ave. I had to go there to believe it! I was planning on buying it but backed out at last minute because it is just sooo much cereal! The cereal is pretty good but kind of over hyped imho.

I don't know. it's just a nice snack. like cookies and milk. I wouldn't eat them for breakfast myself. but during those times when I just want a quick something to tide myself over until my next meal, it hits the spot. I was pleasantly surprised myself at how much I would enjoy it.

you might be too young to tell you the truth. there used to be a slew of cereals in Canada that got discontinued here but not in the states.

examples are cookie crisp, apple jacks, fruity pebbles, count chocula, etc...

of course, now they've brought apple jacks and cookie crisp here again. I'm going to give apple jacks a try sometime. I hear good things.

You are so kind Dash but I am old compared to many of the youngsters here. According to wikipedia, it was introduced by Ralston Purina in 1977, and I would have been watching my Saturday morning cartoons back then. I do remember the other cereals that you mentioned. I just wasn't familiar with this one.

It can't even have been that long ago that they were discontinued. I remember having all the cereals Dash mentioned at one point or another in the mid 90s. Fruity pebbles always sucked compared to froot loops, and cookie crisp always made me think they were taking sugary cereal too far, even when I was a kid.

EDIT: Damn I'm old...

I can confirm it's disappeared from the shelves of the Costco I shop at in the Montreal area (Laval store location). Honestly though, I'm not really disappointed--as a huge fan of Cookie Crisp cereal for years, this Canadian version seems like a mediocre imitation than the real thing.

I wouldn't go as far as saying it's bad, but there IS a noticeable difference. The American Cookie Crisp has a dense texture, the Canadian one is more powdery and light. There also seems to be far less chocolate chips in the Canadian version, and not as "there" in terms of chocolate taste. Bottom line is the American one tastes like cookies, the Canadian one, well, not. Maybe it's just the batch I got, but I just happened to have a box of the US Cookie Crisp I picked up in Vermont back in the summer, and was able to do a side by side comparison and taste test. In fact, here's a picture I took. :)

Too bad really, I tasted my first bowl of Cookie Crisp 25 years ago and been wishing they'd carry it in Canada ever since! Hands down it's my favorite cereal, and whenever I'm in the States I always make sure to grab a box or two.

I never got a box while it was briefly here in Canada (no costco membership. though I could have gotten someone to get it for me). Very interesting analysis and picture. Of course, it's not surprising. I think there was a reason why it's not here in canada, and that's because of it's sugar and nutritional content. Guess I'll be grabbing a box next time I'm in the states, along with some other US only products.

Picked up some Applejack's a few weeks ago, meh it's not even close to as good as I remembered. That's because it's not authentic Apple Jacks cereal. I picked up a box here in Canada marked "Limited Edition" and it's not even remotely like American Apple Jacks (at least the Canadian Cookie Crisp tastes somewhat similar, even though it's not the same). It should have read "Counterfeit Edition"!

The Canadian Apple Jacks taste like a cross between Fruit Loops and Honey Nut Cheerios, albeit with far less sugary coating and an awful taste. Those little crunchy brown bits (shown on the box and in the US version) are no where to be found on the cereal. And it's very light and powdery too for some reason. I grabbed it on clearance for 96 cents a box at a local Provigo (owned by Loblaws), though after trying it, can't say it was worth even that... :)

maybe you can argue with them and prove that cookie crisp and apple jacks don't count as food. Just read off the ingredients and argue that unlike actual food, these cereals have no nutritional content whatsoever.

Too bad it's no longer available in Canada once again, although I will repeat I'm not that disappointed since it was just a cheap imitation.

Hah, I think it's funny how the US box tagline is:
"The great taste of chocolate chip cookies and milk"

Whereas the Canadian one was:
"The taste of Chocolately chip cookies with milk"

Ahh, so they admit the 'GREAT' taste is missing! Yep, the Canadian one has some element of taste, they just won't say if it's good or bad! And they further admit they left out actual chocolate chips, I guess "chocolately chip" is the Canadian saying for barely-visible-simulated-chocolate-like-trace-elements. Hmm, "...and milk" versus "...with milk"? That implies it NEEDS the milk... otherwise it'd be "The taste of chocolately flakey bits embedded in powdery sawdust chunks WITHOUT milk". :) Okay, it wasn't quite that bad, but no where close to the real deal you can only buy in the States.

Incidentally, if you live in Montreal, there is one store in on the west island carries official Cookie Crisp, imported from the US! Unfortunately last time I checked it was whopping $6.67 per box (regular-sized, 318 g).

Out of curiosity, I called General Mills Canada this afternoon and asked about availability. At first she claimed it was, but after a bit of investigation it is listed on their database as a "Costco only" product, available only during Christmas 2009.

Bottomline: she said it might reappear again, but under the same restrictions: Costco-only, Christmas 2010.

For the desperate: The Clark Avenue Sobey's in Thornhill has been importing Cookie Crisp for a while. There are a few products they bring in for the Kosher crowd. Oreos are another because the American ones, for whatever reason, have Kosher certification.
You'll pay a premium (I feel like Cookie Crisp is $5.29 or something) but it's been in stock for years, as far as I can recall.

Thought I'd post a heads up that I spotted Cookie Crisp in stores once again! Costco in Montreal (Laval region) had several bulk-size boxes on special for $5.65 per box. As before you get two large packages in one box.

Interesting, since General Mills told me these were only being produced on a seasonal basis, once per year (i.e. Christmas time). Guess they changed their mind?

Grabbed a box to share with my brother. I would have grabbed several if not for the fact I was so disappointed by the taste and texture of this Canadian version of Cookie Crisp.

Do they actually have one?
That would be awesome!

You could always take some mini oreos, they sell those in a plastic bag you can reseal, and dump some in a bowl with milk, soy milk..whatever.

or with chocolate milk!

I think oreos and ice cream is better though.

They have an Oreo "straw"now. I want to try that sometime.

I love combo's!
I remember it being such a treat when I was small... because its hard to find corner stores that actually sell them.

Its something about that pasty/powdery cheese and pretzel... ll

I like the pizza combos:lol:

I did find some at the mall near me, they sell them at this asian run convenience store in the mall.
I have a bag here from the US and it is never more than $2.50 in the US.
They wanted $5 plus tax at the mall:mad: plus a fee for using interac..so I did not bother.

I think if I eat those even 2x a year it is enough.

Bought a box today at the North York location, and was $2.00 off, so it came to be $5.59/box.

If it's on sale, I guess I'll try a box and see if it lives up to my childhood expectations.

Same. I bought two boxes @ 100 Biscayne Cresent/Steeles Ave E location.

For those who want to know they'll have it @ Costco every 3 months.

I know this has been mentioned before when it pops up here and there, but for the last several months, I've seen the big boxes of Cookie Crisp cereal at the Burlington Costco. I don't eat the stuff but there are many here that do, so thought I would offer it up.

BTW, they also had something that looked like chocolate Cheerios? New to me and along the same lines I guess. If you like one, I'm sure you'll like the other.

If this isn't news to anyone, well then, sorry...

I was not too fond of this when I tried it. Tasted like corn pops with a very light hint of chocolate. I was expecting it to taste more like...cookies.

That's the same comparison my sister made, and I later came to the conclusion of. Basically Corn Pops with a different name. Almost a shame really because I bought myself a package of 6 - 2 years ago, and I thought it was pretty good. =/
