I was just wondering if it was against RFD rules to "test waters" in the BST forums.

Not sure exactly what you mean by "test waters" but, you might want to double-check the BST rules (http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/buy-sell-trading-post/announcement-bst-rules-guidelines-sponsored-poster-info.html):
