YMMV -- BestBuy.ca has this computer available for In Store Pick-up only. You cannot order it online and have it shipped. Not all locations have this comptuer in stock.

Acer Aspire Desktop Computer featuring Intel Core Quad 8300 (AX3810-E3813A)

Processor Type Intel Core Quad 8300
Processor Speed 2.5GHz
RAM 4 GB DDR3 SDRAM
Hard Drive Speed/Capacity 500 GB SATA 7200 RPM
Optical Drives Super Multi DVD+/-RW; DVD-RAM
Graphics Intel GMA X4500
Pre-loaded Operating System Windows Vista Home Premium 64-Bit

http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?sku_id=0926INGFS10126356&logon=L&langid=EN

NOTE: During the checkout screen, add the digital dollars code: PIZZZ020205435275577 to get $20 off your order (from $349.95 down to $329.95). I thought you needed the order to be $350+ but I did not need to add any filler item when I entered the code to get the discount

Unfortunately this item is not available in Nova Scotia. But I tried 2 locations in Quebec and both have the machine in stock so you can do in store pickup at these locations.

If you can find this item in stock at your bestbuy location I think its a very hot deal.

This system has a quad core processor (4 cores) vs 2 core on the other.

The other machine has a slightly bigger hard drive (640GB vs 500GB) and has HDMI out capability

However this machine is SFF (small form factor)

For me, I'd rather the quad CPU over the HDMI out and 140GB extra HDD space. However depending on what you want to use it for, you may choose differently.

On the main page, it says:

1 HDMI output, 9 USB 2.0 ports, 1 FireWire, and an integrated memory card reader

However, under the spec it says No for HDMI port...i hate when they do this.

Also, this has built in Wi-fi.

I like this bestbuy deal better. The specs on it is better than the one at CC and also if you want a small form factor machine, let say beside your tv, this is great for that.

The only thing I wouldn't look forward to in this PC is for gaming. Why? Althought it has 1 pci-e x16 slot available, you only have a 220watt power supply, maybe you can put a nvidia 9600 in there. I believe the better video card requires high power.

But overall it's great if you just want internet and word processing.

The other machine has a slightly bigger hard drive (640GB vs 500GB) and has HDMI out capability

Specs say this includes HDMI out (it's the same graphics card) so it's really 120GB vs +2cores and SFF. Would have to say: this trounces the other.

If HD space is really important, you can put a 500GB drive in for +$50.

If you are just surfing, then you really don't need it to be powerful. But if you are planning to do more (or expand later), you might want to spend a little more now and get a faster CPU (Q9300), way better graphics (GT120), more RAM, bigger HD, AND a 22" monitor. Anyway just my thoughts.

If you are expanding later, you would be able to upgrade with better prices since they will all eventually go down. I think the only + that Costco deal has is the processor and monitor really because rarely would you go over 4 GB of ram and it's not expensive to upgrade to 6GB anyways. The GT120 isn't even a gaming card. The 8800GT is probably better and it costs like $50-70 if you buy it from a friend or on RFD.

If this CPU is as powerful as I assume, being quad core, isn't it a bit of a waste sticking it in a SFF case? I don't think this one allows for any extra storage to be added, and the Acer specs indicate that the PCI Express 2.0 x16 graphics card slot only supports low-profile cards, meaning I may not be able to use any of my existing video cards to bump up graphics performance and make full use of the CPU. Also, no PCI slot available for my TV tuner card, which would have been a nice addition to make it into a small HTPC.

Wonder if the board can be transferred into a larger case perhaps, at least for the shorter-term? (Though that would of course lose all the advantages of the compact size).

Hi there,

I ordered one for ISPU, hopefully, they have it in stock. *lol* Though, no idea how did anyone got like 100$ off, but I can't find it.

Update: Never mind. I got it. Though, I think the reason why no one need a filler because BB give up some free software packaging (it was added with the computer when you add it to your cart), which values like 350$, but it's free when you buy the computer, maybe that's why it bumped up the value (in total in a way), which allows to use the coupon in the end...

I am used to spending MONTHS going over specs before I make the right decision on a system I will use for years to come - in the old days, that meant thousands of dollars invested so it was wise to be careful.

Lucky enough to get one of these, so I'm shopping for a video card to make it more viable. I'll probably go with this one -

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127458

Though this one looks nice if I'm willing to add some in case cooling -

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814500103

Or maybe -

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814162016

So what do the experts think?

I'd probably go for that first one too. Obviously not a high end card, but it's the cheapest and fanless. Also, it's Military Class, FTW!;)

I am very glad that it has gigabit LAN.

Also it said in my order I get a "$300 worth software package'. What is that?

I think I was the last person who snatched the last one in Leaside store during lunch and have my ISPU filled.

One thing I forgot is to add the $30 HP printer. I am hoping to add that at time of pick-up *fingers crossed"

This thing is really small. Do you think I can pull the CPU, RAM, hard drive and dvd drive out and put it into a standard XTX case? Are they standard size components? I already have a nice OCZ ps and Asus motherboard..will this work? These small form factors can be a bit odd.

nope... it assumes the store has quantities left.

Until your order is verified and approved by the store... They get a ticket, they look at the stock, reserves your stock, then approves it.

In the meantime, just go there and grab it.

I didn't bother waiting to be approved. Went to the store, they say they didn't get any ticket, I showed them the order number and they did the procedure.

But in my case, the clerck cancelled my order because no new box was available. I saw the computer screen and she just click the denied button. lol

So next time, if it shows quantities available. Buy it online then run to the store right away!

I've plugged mine into 3 different power outlets in separate rooms for over 15 minutes each time and it still fails to turn on. Is there any status light to indicate that the unit is receiving power. They only had an open box unit left, and it doesn't seem to be working. Any suggestions?

Thanks, OP! I just picked one up from the Victoria store. Online says they don't have stock but I saw three (I grabbed one!) all in different places on their upper shelves. Just find it yourself and ask someone to grab it and confirm the price. They have no idea where anything is there. It is a pretty new store though. Also, if you can't see one, look for a box that's turned sideways. The girl helping me did that when she was grabbing a printer for me.

Hi guys, so here we are , got the computer, installed it and am typing these words of it. I am about to upgrade it to windows 7 off the acer website.

A little tip for most of you that got it and are not sure about keeping it (not my case for sure). The 'bonus' software that you get that says 329.95 when you order your computer and credits it to 0. Well the representative at Best Buy told me that if you open that up and then decide within the 14 days to return the computer, you will be charged for the software. So guess what.. go back with computer with software open = 0$ back :) .

I'm not encouraging returns far from it, but in case you have to because it doesn't suit your needs.... now you know

If any of you are intersted of the Windows Vista index numbers the computer gets:

5.9 for processor
5.9 for RAM
4.5 for graphics
4.1 for gaming graphics
5.9 for priamry hard drive ( which is 640 GB)

I am looking into solutions for upgrading the video card

getting a bigger power supply + a low profile video card

If anyone has any suggestions or started trying to tweak that , please let us know.

I'll test some games with the stock card and post that too.

Cheers

So a video card with an index of 5.9 would be an excellent fit for this machine. Wonder what cards achieve that sort of rating?

Interestingly enough, I believe the same video chip is used in the WM Gateway laptop, but there, likely due to the slower DDR2 RAM (or possibly it being a mobile version), the graphics indices are both 3.5.

Instead you need to provide the Serial Number + the date of purchase and well ..your adress.. and they will send you a copy home within 7 business days.

Important information for some quebec-ers (did i spell that right? ) :) and not only, the upgrade for windows 7 is only available in the language you initally picked when you opened/set up your vista for the 1st time. My unit was DOA so I opened up the case to check for any loose wires and took a look at the inside.
The case and power supplies are crap; the motherboard doesn't look too hot.
Upgrading to a decent videocard will most likely require a new power supply which will most likely require a new case...

If your goal is to use this as mid-performance PC, think again because for the same price you could get the "CPU, RAM, HDD, DVD-RW". Pair this with a reputable motherboard and PSU and you got yourself a great computer that will last. Also keep in mind that the moment your motherboard stops working, you'll lose your OS license.

What size is the motherboard? Can it be trasfered to another case?

OK here is my story.
Picked up from BB Leaside last night along with the HP $30 all in one colour printer. Total is ~$430 (taxes, enviro fee in).

Tried to power up, no luck. Later realized that the power switch is a bit finicky so one has to press to the corner very hard to turn it on.

I also opened up the case and, man it is crumpled in there. Some might have trouble fitting the add on video cards in since not much of space for the big heat sink nor the fan. Keep that in mind.

Backed up all the data with the software that was installed on Vista. Pulled my Windows 7 Professional this morning and during breakfast it installed itself in 15 minutes. No drivers or any other software needed even for the N wireless card.

The machine now flies. The Windows 7 experience index also shows better CPU, Hard Disk numbers. 7.9 for CPU and 5.9 for Hard disk IIRC.

I will go back tonight to change the SATA settings so that it can be seen by HDDTune to quiet it down. The 640GB Hitachi Sata is good enough for HTPC purposes and later I can add an eSata extension.

Overall $380 taxes in, is a good price for a such system. It is not and will not be 'gaming machine' but for the 90% of the folks here (like myself) a nice, quiet, somewhat elegant design hardware for web surfing, desktop publishing or HTPC (which I will use it in the bedroom for).

That's good to hear for anybody else who waited. Sometimes they refuse to honour the ISPU if they claim the price was a "mistake". This does seem an unusually good price for a quad, but maybe it's a sign that all SFF machines are about to drop in price? Was at surrey BB, I saw the label of the price, but the CSR told me that the showcase unit is sold and there's no units left in the store, but he did mention that at Cambie had 2 units left, and since the price was 349.95, this is a discontinued product hence the price is to clear. I don't think I'll have time to do this, but maybe someone else can take advantage of this.

I ordered mine online at 9:30AM PST yesterday for ISPU in Surrey and still have not receive a pickup or cancellation email.

I did receive the "order being processed" email.

Hopefully they have a unit for me and it's not display unit.

Picked mine up this afternoon.

Was not even expecting the ISPU to get filled.

It was an open box unit that they had, nothing wrong with it, not even a finger print as it still has the plastic film around the front bezel.

Opened the case up, no dust and still has the 'New' computer smell.

Got it for $301.98 all in.

Mine has the 640gb 16MB cache Hitachi hard drive as well. And the Ram is 2x2GB modules of Samsung 10066 DDR3. There are four ram slots altogether.

Guess they are calling it a 500gig drive because the restore partition makes up the other 120gigs on the drive.

I processed the Windows 7 free upgrade already on Acer Canada's website. Should receive the upgrade package by next Wednesday the soonest, :D .

It is not and will not be 'gaming machine' but for the 90% of the folks here (like myself) a nice, quiet, somewhat elegant design hardware for web surfing, desktop publishing or HTPC (which I will use it in the bedroom for).

is that correct for the processor? my oc i7 920 only show 7.5

the only thing that annoys me about this unit is the stupid power button... Had to press and hold it a few times before i could get it to turn on. a new case might be a must....

Depends on your location, and how good of a mood the manager is.

The girl at the customer service was all apologetic from the moment I said 'I am here to pick up an ISPU'. She was like, we have it filled, but it is an open box return, so our manager slashed the price on it for you. I just said, 'Wow, thanks' was not expecting this. She said her boss wants to clear out all old systems before the X-mas rush, and she told me to come back next week for even greater deals instore.

It was unexpected, as I was expecting to pay $357.48 all in.
I'm not complaining whatsoever.

This system has been running since 3pm with at least 7 restarts after installing apps. No problems yet.

it was 350 - 5% openbox - 10$ rebate + tx

I wonder what kind of discount you got for open box...

Search for "low profile pci-e video" you can get tons of info from various websites...

I can see the 8800 gforce series seem nice... and I think some of them don't need PSU upgrade. But as far as PSU, we really need an PSU upgrade, this PSU is worst than its video. lol

Anyone can list me what was included in the box of this acer computer please!

I have a 350 watt PSU from a Antec Minuet 350 case that I got off of Kijiji. Look up Antec MT350 for the PSU. PSU (http://ep.yimg.com/ca/I/directron_2038_363833019)

Looks like it might fit. I'll find out for sure Friday evening.

For video, you could always go with this one to keep the PSU from overloading.

I wonder if a 350watt could power this card, and the system as well?

Otherwise, you could just leave it as is.
I'm not looking to use it to play hardcore graphic intensive games, but just for daily things like watching movies, going on the net, burning off dvd/cd's and any other non gaming computer things.

It may just be that Win7 and Vista use different rating methods, or Win7's index may just have lower standards, to make systems APPEAR to run faster under Win7.

Nice find! The PSU, from the look seems to fit. But that sparkle card, its heatsink is way too big to fit. I'd go with the asus, but don't really like ATI...

If it is Vista, should be the following directory:
Control Panel\System and Maintenance\Performance Information and Tools

An easier way is to right-click the "Computer" from the start menu. Select properties. Then click performance on the lower left.

If I start from Vista, is this a waste of time to go with W7 directly? Any suggestions?

I assume they want to be sure you keep the system before sending out copies of 7

IMO I say go straight to Windows 7... don't waste time with Vista. Vista was a failure, Windows 7 is supposed to be pretty good.

Hi, I've created a new thread in the Computers & Electronics section as an area where purchasers of the Acer Intel Q8300 4gb 500gb Desktop at Best Buy ($330 or $350) can continue the discussion of various tech issues and post-purchase matters related to this system. There are currently at least three Expired Deals threads and the info is getting scattered between them. Time to bring everything together in one place. :)

Feel free to add to and build this thread into a useful resource for owners of the BB Acer Intel Q8300 4gb 500gb Desktop and similar SFF systems.
