View Full Version : Check out ToysrUs Flyer Ad for Canon SD1200 - On sale for $129.97

Oct 29th, 2009, 09:39 PM
The new flyer for ToysRUS 2 GREAT WEEKS Friday October 30 to Thursday November 12 clearly advertises a $129.97 sale price for a Canon Powershot SD 1200 . It even shows the picture of a SD1200IS. Problem is that ToysRUs doesn't sell the SD 1200IS. The item number shown in the ad 637904 brings up the Powershot A480 10 MP Digital Camera - Blue for price today of $149.99

Note sale starts Friday October 30th so I assume a retraction will be printed very soon to disclose that the ad is incorrect.

Since you can't buy a SD1200IS from ToysRus, that leaves it wide open for RFD members to sneak it past FS,BB , Sears , Staples , others, for a PM buy opportunity and hope that the clerk doesn't bother calling or checking TOYSRUS to see if it is available at store for purchase.

For those who do get a successful PM, post your experience here.

I don't think the PM will work as I can't seem to find Toys R Us under Dealer Locator in the Canon website (at least not around GTA) >:( For such a big price difference the CSR's will likely use the "they're not an authorized dealer" excuse...

So what is the argument here? You need to buy both to get the $129.97 price. The title of the thread is misleading.

It's save $20 when you buy the camera alone and you save $50 if you buy ($149.99+99.99-$50)both the camera and printer. Although I have to say the Save $50 on the ad is a bit confusing. The thread title is correct!:cheesygri

Yes, you only save $40 and not $50 as the ad says, so another misprint probably.

This is my understanding as well. Why else would they say "buy more & save".
It does not mean if you buy everything in this flyer you save more....it means buy both and save an additional $10.

They make it 50.... so 149.99 + 99.99 - 50...

I just got back from Walmart and after some arguing about what the ad actually means I got it for $139, although he did throw in a gorilla tripod for free. Still a great deals for a camera they normally sell for $218! . This deal won't last long though because he said he was going to bring the ad up in a conference call this later this morning.

2. checked online.. quickly let me cash out..for 119.99

You're best bet is to take the flyer to Walmart, they go by active flyers and are less likely to call like FS/BB/Staples. Since it's really the A480 at TRU, ethics is another story.

You are serious? They advertise a price match policy for the same product.

Not for misprint that you know IS a misprint. That is fraud.

They don't search excuses to weasel out, they search why the supposely same product is 100$ less or in this case 56% cheaper elsewhere. The reason in this case is simple, misprint.

They're sales and they're errors, and it's normal for a store not to lose money on the error of a competitor.

Our lowest price guarantee does not apply to advertising errors or misprints, special educational prices, restricted offers, mail order offers, rebates, coupons, premiums, free or bonus offers, OEM products, limited or minimum quantity or limited time offers, close-outs, liquidations, clearances, financing, other special offers, or Boxing Day (Dec. 24-27, 2009, or Dec. 24-28, 2009 in Atlantic Canada) prices.

+1 for flyer. I was wondering why there was only 1 flyer left when I went to my local Toysrus, now the answer is clear. :D

That is how you run business, screw others without incurring any loss. But i truely believe even at 129 the retailer still has margin.

based on what? you think the other store are doing a 56% margin on it?? electronics margin is 5-10% this is a big loss for sure.

Dealt with a nice guy here in Chatham, I printed the online ad and brought it in, he double checked their flyer on the website to be sure. Before I could show him the printout he mentioned that they didn't have the SD1200 in stock, but that he might be able to give me the SD780IS (http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?sku_id=0665000FS10120677&logon=&langid=EN) for the same price. I told him that I was actually looking to PM the SD1200 with Toyrus, and asked him if he'd give me the SD780IS for the PM price of $129. He said probably not as that is a huge price difference. I then asked him if he'd give me the $100 off the SD780IS. After some discussing back and forth and telling him that I would be buying a SD card and maybe the warranty, we got it taken care of.

He has called their customer service but they were pricks to him so he didn't want to deal with their 1-800 after that!

Anyhow, after confirming, my total was $191.99 plus tax ($29.99 for service plan, $19.99 for 4 GB SD card, and $141.99 for the camera after the PM less 10%)

Thanks OP, the mother in law will love this camera! I'm actually kind of jealous!

Just to confirm, This is a mid year model that probably competes with higher price point models. It is in a quasi-liquidation process. At my local Loblaws clone Maxi et Cie. ( Quebec's Walmart beater). The version with the gorilla tripod is $161.99, the same model with the "leather" case is $229.99.(go figure that out)
Observation: the A480 is on sale for $119.99 at Maxi and Co. this is the price match at FS for the SD1200IS with the case included. Good choice of colours.
This model is not selling well and has to have trinkets included to fool the locals that they are getting a deal. I believe that this model will settle eventually at the $149 MSRP.
At the price match it is a value deal for quality. I got a Kodak 1093IS for $99.00 on Dell's days of deals recently (It does 720p video albeit with mixed results) for a brother in law.

I presume Canon has started to give deals to retailers to compensate for slower moving premium stuff.

Two tries:

1. Failed at Hwy 7 and Yonge Staples - the guy there went on the TRU website and typed in the product number and found out it was an A480.

2. Got this successfully PM'd at Walmart on Centre St. and Bathurst - no additional 10% of the difference though.

Picked a real flyer at Toysrus first then got it PMed at a local Staples.

I thought I need SD card as well so I picked one verbatim 4GB what is on sale for 29.93. I thought it should be over $150 so I can use the 20 off 150 but I didn't realize the subtotal was $150.01 that almost exactly qualified me for the coupon.....

PM Worked at WALMART at Bathurst and Centre. They put up an argument that the item number on the online flyer is SD 1200 and not SD 1200 IS. All I had to do was bring in the actual flyer and show the IS on the actual camera and they honoured it, wasn't easy tho.

Good luck

1st Walmart: they called Toys r Us - they dont have this model in canada
2nd Walmart: they accepted price match but only pink color left
3rd Walmart: after 15min in line for PhotoLab, no problem got it YEAH !

Well had an interesting day with this one, but after lots of stops finally had success.

1st stop: Toys R' Us

Picked up the actual flyer on the way in the door. Found item on Page 44 quickly thanks to this post. Went to Electronics dept. and did not see this camera anywhere in site. Asked a salesperson and they told me that they ran out but would have more in about one week. Riiiiiiiight... said thanks and went on my way.

2nd stop: Best Buy

Took in the Toys R' Us flyer and went to Electronics dept. Found the actual camera boxed in the bundle package and everything. Grabbed it and approached a sales rep. about a price match. Before I could even scan to the correct page in the TRU flyer, he told me not to even bother. He was well aware of the misprint in the ad already. They had a meeting about it already and were told not to price match as it was an error in the ad. He even knew of the correct model that should have been listed in the ad at that price.

3rd stop: Future Shop #1

Took in the flyer and found the SD1200 in camera display. No bundle package however, just the camera itself. Asked salesperson about a price match. Showed him the ad in the TRU flyer. He seemed quite shocked by the price. He went on to ask me if TRU had any of these in stock. I said that they ran out but would have more in a week. He said that the other store needs to have stock before they can price match. Even if I had lied though he told me that he would have called the store to confirm stock before doing a PM.

4th stop: Costco

They didn't even have this model on display.. ended up buying a few other things though. :)

5th stop: Walmart

Took in the flyer and found the SD1200 in camera display. No bundle package however, just the camera itself. Asked salesperson about a price match. Showed him the ad in the TRU flyer. He seemed quite shocked by the price. He didn't see any reason not to do a PM and went to grab a boxed package from under the display counter. He came up from under the counter to tell me that he couldn't PM. There was a typed note in front of these cameras that explained the entire scenario about the incorrect ad in the Toys R' Us flyer and how it should have been another model at this price and they were NOT to price the SD1200 for anyone.

6th stop: Future Shop #2

I will be honest.. at this point I had no hope going in that this would work after the continuous disappointment from every stop before this. Again took in the actual flyer.. located the camera in the display counter. They had one and only one bundle package w/ the free case under the counter in grey. The colour we wanted! Called over the sales rep. A cute asian girl I might add.. hehe.. asked her if she could price match the camera with TRU. Showed her the ad. She too was in total disbelief of the price. Said she has never seen it under $200.. Told me that she would have to call her manager about this due to the huge price difference. She was gone for awhile on the phone. Thought at this point I'd be turned away.. again.. she came back and said no problem she can do it. She explained that they only had one left.. in grey.. told her thats what I wanted. Got my extra $10.00 off with the 10% difference off and rang me through at $119.98

Sorry 'bout the long story but it was a long day and wanted to share my experience. Just glad all that driving around all afternoon finally paid off. It doesn't seem that FS is aware of the ad mistake like the BB and WM were already. Hope that helps if someone else is still looking! Thanks OP! :)

I have read into this 1200IS it is a relatively good camera for the deal price.Given the small lense a 10MP VS 12MP (more noise) on the same sized sensor ,the 10MP will resolve better. The 780IS has been criticized for distortion and soft pictures on edges. The 780IS has 720p video which has been praised in the reviews.
It is being replaced by the 940IS which will hit shelves for the holidays. I predict deals on the 780IS will be coming. The elph series cameras are like a pack of smokes that fit in the pocket. There are compromises in the design.Canon is moving to the 4x optical zoom (the 28mm)the camera bodies will be slightly thicker to acommedate this and a bigger apeture that should alleviate the complaints. I also read from dpreview that Canon is making more money from selling fewer units. So in the space of six months, 3 products for the same market segment. It could also be said that the variation in models is being reduced to same money in these tough times.

Can you guys check where the camera is made in on yours?

All the pictures I have seen of this camera from places like digitalcamerareview, steve's, photographyblog, show that this camera is made in Japan but the one I got 2 weeks ago from BB is made in China.

I went to FS and Staples to check where theirs are made in but their anti-theft dongles on the bottom of the cameras make it impossible to check. Just wondering if the country they are made in varies by chain.

Don't know if that really makes a difference but I just find the battery and AV/USB port covers to be quite flimsy. The battery door is kind of curved/bulging outwards so when I hold the camera I can feel it flexing. The AV/USB port isn't very flush either. They both feel like they won't endure many opening and closings.

is the deal dead??

No the deal is not dead. The ToysRUS flyer sale price for the SD1200 is good until the end of Thursday Nov 12th.

As long as RFD members haven't cleaned out the cameras from your area, or the stores have all been notified of the flyer misprint, it's still worth trying to get the same price at other stores by showing them the actual hard copy printed flyer.

A local WM store I went to on Saturday didn't have of the SD1200IS cameras in stock and told me to come back tomorrow ( Tuesday) as an inventory check indicated there were a lot in transit to arrive then. The clerk had no problem with matching the price and specifically noted the flyer end date was Thursday November 12th.

I had no problem today getting both a blue and pink bundle package SD1200IS from Zellers for the price shown in the ToysRUs flyer. Further bonus included being able to use a $10 off $75 coupon Zellers coupon that I received by email. The same coupon was being given out in the Zellers store as well. The store clerks had taped coupons to all the shopping buggies.

Zellers is selling the Canon SD1200IS in a bundled retail box that includes the camera and case. April Lavigne edition is the pink bundle.

The PM was rather easy when the clerk asked me which SD1200IS I wanted to buy ( meaning just the camera itself or the bundle of camera and case ). I just said I wanted the same as shown in the ToysRUs flyer and the clerk took a few minutes to read the flyer. Clerk said what a great deal and ran through each camera bundle as a separate transaction so I could use the $10 off coupon on each transaction.

From what I could see, there were lots of the Canon SD1200IS bundles behind the counter so maybe Zellers is bringing in lots of them for year end clearance??:lol::lol:
