How much does Central AC cost in general?

I have a situation where I have just bought a new 1,900sq-feet semi, and it doesn't come with central ac. It does come with the central heating system already. The sales office says never buy from the builder because they're going to hike up the price and cost of installation etc.

So, I just need to buy the Central AC device. How much do you think it will be for the criteria set above (1,900 sq feet, central heating system already installed, meaning pretty much I will just need a central ac 'add-on' as everything else was supposed to be set up) and what brands are reliable and very cost-effective?

What kind of budget will I be looking at? Anyone knows just roughly or in general? There just doesn't seem to be a lot of information on the internet...and you'd have to call in and make an appointment everytime--basically allowing them to do their salespitch right on inside ur home...and for that reason I want to research first beforehand, as a reasonable person would not rely on salespitches...

$2000. and up. depends one make, model, efficiency and where you are located. Might be some good deals this time of year, or prior tonext years new models coming out.
