Does anyone here use Persil laundry detergent? This stuff seems to be pretty expensive but is it worth it? Anyone know of any places to get this for a reasonable price? Miele stores carry these but they charge about $42 for a 45 load package.

I guess the question is, with regular "cheap" detergents your clothes are coming out .... still dirty?

Isn't Persil some kind of UK import? Why would you need to use imported laundry detergent? But that is probably why it's expensive.
It's probably not a bad choice if you live in Germany, but a waste of money if you're simply using a German washing machine in Canada :)

woof, I'm looking for a detergent that'll be gentle on my clothes as well as cleaning them well which was why I was seeking opinions on this detergent and trying to determine if it's worth the price premium. I'll gladly buy the "cheap" detergents if there's not much difference, this is why we're on RFD after all :)
mbg, ha ha, yeah. I just bought a Miele (German) washer and they import these laundry detergent into Canada and sell/recommends them in their stores. This was why I was curious about them. Good observation about the importing probably adding to the cost though.

Frankly it looks like the German equivalent of Tide. Might be difficult to find someone who has even used it since it's only sold through Miele stores and marketed as a luxury item to justify the high price here.
Also available on eBay strangely enough.

Persil is also a very common Brand in France (like Tide here). But there's something about how it is formulated because there is a huge difference in how it cleans compared to NA brands. It also smells much much better than anything you can find here. It is also very common to buy it in tabs (just like we do here with dishwasher tabs), really don't know why no one has yet introduced tabs for laundry here yet...so much more convenient than dosing by the scoop or cup.

With the tabs you can't really change the load sizes, I would think because the tabs are one size.
I also find that the laundry detergent companies ask for too much soap, so with the tabs you maybe using too much soap?\
I have recently bought a Miele dishwasher, and we really like it! Hope you find your washer very good.

This is bumping an old thread... but is there any possibility that using a laundry detergent like Persil might minimize the chance of mould/mildew developing in a front-load washer?

dont bother wasting your energies looking for persil. having worked and costed formulations in the laundry powder/liquid industry, you're ok with whatever you wish to use/find here. Tide is more than good enough. Persil aint perfect either esp. with previous historical debacles (but obviously more than 15 yrs old now) -- this is based on my own knowledge and experience with the industry.

Have you got a Maytag Neptune by any chance?

Well, we LOVE Persil and won't use anything else.....price per load is better with the Persil than anything we've used, and we're extremely happy with how well it works.
Best bet is to try it yourself rather than listen to the varying opinions.

And your knowledge and experience with the industry didn't tell you that there are two very different Persil detergent formulations? That being sold by Unilever in the UK, Ireland and I think also France, and that being manufactured and sold by Henkle in most of the rest of europe and also in Isreal? It is the Henkle detergents that are mostly if not exclusively imported to Canada and the US. I'm not advocating for the use of Persil, but I don't like when misleading or incorrect "facts" are stated.

I have read that using a powdered detergent in your front loader will reduce the chances of mildew. Liquid detergents are much higher in surfactants that can leave behind residue. I fully believe that most washer mildew is user error. I have had a front loader for 10 years and never any mold issues. It's my experience that powders "suds" less than liquids which is important for a FL machine.
As previous poster commented, there are two Persils. One is made by Henkel in Germany the other belongs to P&G (mostly UK). You want the German version. Since everyone in Europe has been using front load technology much longer than we have here in NA - they make great products for front loaders.
Keep in mind that Persil is designed for the way they wash in Germany. It works best in washers with an onboard heater.
I cannot find any powder brand made for HE here - especially one that doesn't have a powerful scent.
Persil has a more natural scent - not fake flowers and fruit. It also rinses very clean.
The poster who said Tide is just as good ... Tide contains 1 enzyme to Persil's 5. I'm not saying Tide isn't good enough but having used Persil, I can tell you it does a wonderful job in my front loader.
I have read good things about the Sears HE powder detergent as well. It costs less than Persil. It may not be as good (just based on the ingredients) but it may be good enough. Many people on Garden Web's laundry room like it a lot. It also gets good reviews on the US Sears site. http://www.sears.ca/stores/shop/search?langId=1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10001&N=0&Ntk=level1&Ntt=laundry+detergent&Nty=1&D=laundry+detergent&Ntx=mode+matchallpartial&Dx=mode+matchallpartial&initialquery=true&internalSearch=true
There is tons of discussion over on Garden Web re: Persil if you're interested in more reading. http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/laundry/

My husband and I tracked our usage of a $45 box of Persil and in the end felt that it cost about the same as a box of Tide. We had over the amount of recommended washes (which is 65) out of the box. I buy it at Dennigers but would like to know if anyone knows of other stores in Oakville who carry it.

I don't know about Oakville but Reliable Parts (locations in Mississauga) sell it.
http://www.reliableparts.ca/locations/ON#Mississauga
Also, there is a German grocery on the Oakville Mississauga border that carries it too (Starsky's).
Just be careful, I have seen people selling Polish versions of Persil which Henkel Germany told
me are not the same formulation as the German products.

You can also contact Miele Canada (which is the seller of Persil in Canada) directly to find out
what other stores in your area might stock it.

I've bought from this guy:

Price per load, and cleaning quality nothing beats Persil. I can't imagine going back to anything else.

Doesn't anyone feel a bit embarrassed importing their laundry detergent from Europe?

Do you eat fruit imported from Chile/South America (where ever) during the winter??
My washer and dryer were imported from Germany. Why should that be embarrassing?
The Europeans have been using front loading machines for MANY years - many more than North Americans. Persil detergent works amazingly well in my front load machine.
As I try to use more “green” options, I only use Persil for certain loads. I use other brands like Seventh Generation (among others). That’s imported from the US. Should that be embarrassing too?
Many people choose to use Ecover products (more “green”). Ecover products are manufactured in the unique, world-famous ecological factories in Malle, Belgium and Boulogne-sur-mer, France. They are shipped all over the world. Is that embarrassing?
I fail to understand your question. Things are exported and imported all over the world.

Because we are talking a shelf-stable, non-seasonable, frequently-replenished consumable used to launder clothing.
It just seems like an absurdity of cheap energy plus the global market that, when there is plenty of domestic detergent available, the only thing that will do for some people is laundry detergent imported from Europe.
Isn't it a bit like eating baguettes imported fresh daily from France? Or only tolerating drinking water that was bottled as it bled from the Swiss Alps?
I'm not against globalization or anything like that, it just seems to be going a bit too far to have such a highly refined taste in laundry detergent.

How is it that Starsky's flyer is selling Persill 6 kg on sale for 26.99 from 34.99 but at Reliable Parts the price is 42.99 (but I can;t make out the weight). Thats a big difference. When i bought my 4 kg box of Persil (somewhere in Vaughan) but they have since moved it was for around 42.00 I believe so I am assuming the Reliable Parts is 4 kg. How is it possible for Starsky to have the bigger quantity and at such a low price?

That's because Starsky's is not selling the German version of Persil. They are selling bags intended for Poland and some other European countries. There is no English on those bags. According to Henkel in Germany, the Polish version is formulated differently than the German one. The referred to it as a "cheaper" version. Henkel makes different formulations depending on the distribution (based on certain countries washing needs).
Here is a link that shows you the Polish version:

Here is a link that shows you the German version:

I have tried the Polish version (Sensitive Color) and it worked OK. I actually prefer the scent to the German megaperls which are quite strong to me.
