View Full Version : Washing Brita Pitcher

I'm wondering how often people wash their Brita pitchers (or similar pitchers). My parents taught me to wash it every two weeks but I was going through old boxes today and realized the Brita instructions don't actually say that's necessary. So what do people on RFD do?
(To be clear, I'm talking about how often people put it in water with soap, not how often they change the filter.)
(Oh, and if the mods think this fits better somewhere else go for it.)

I wash mine regularly. I cannot say I am on a schedule but it certainly gets washed with soap and water every now and then. For sure when I change filters but every two or three weeks anyway.

Have you ever wondered why?

Do the instructions actually say its NOT necessary to wash it? Or do they just not say anything about washing?
If you bought a set of dishes that didn't have instructions on how often to wash them, would you not wash them either?
Use common sense. Every once in a while wash it out with soap and water.

I think dishes are a little different because after almost every meal it's pretty clear you need to wash them. The Brita always looks pretty clean.
"Every once in a while" isn't particularly helpful. If the answer is that nobody really knows how fast the Brita gets dirty then that's fine, but I thought I'd give it a whirl and see what other people are doing.

i wash it out everytime i change the filters. just nice to get the carbon articles out.
i've noticed that if i don't wash it carbon dust does build up inside the pitcher.

i wash it every 2-3 weeks and at the same time empty all the water in the pitcher as for the filter it should be change every two months.

Around every 2 weeks.
I also clean the tank on my coffee machine, it comes off and can go in the dishwasher!
as well also wash my coffee pot every 2 days as I use it for different teas at home.

i have one of those 5-cup brita pitchers but i don't wash it as often as everyday... i'm one of the 10 people at work who use it and i never see people wash it.
however, i do wash mine every 2 weeks or so. i never read the instructions before but even if they don't suggest you wash it, i would still wash it... just incase "stuff" starts building in there. you can't possibly go years without washing it and still feel like you're getting good clean water?
