Why so much and is there any way to get it lower?

if you are student you can get a really good price
cable + internet + phone for $59.99
but it ended Oct 31st. You can call and see if they can back date it.
If you are not a student then the other thing I can think of is bundled pricing.

The price of true basic cable is regulated by our old friends the CRTC. But the cable companies don't even want you to know about that regulated product. That goes back to the time that they renamed the next tier up as "standard" and automatically opted-in all the customers who were on basic to the new standard level with unregulated pricing. Now you can't even find any mention of basic cable on their web sites.
