Bought this for wifie a few months back @ Costco when they had a coupon for it. Ended up taking it back under their 90 day satisfaction guarantee. Guy working returns at Costco said they had a lot come back but almost none due to quality issues. Only reason I took it back is that wifie decided she wanted to be able to watch dvd's and this was a no-go on the netbook. Seemed like a decent quality though.

This deal is for the Mini 110 model. It's not 100% compatible with Leopard.
I previously bought the 1139NR model from FS.
1139NR
Pros:
100% Leopard Compatible
Thinner due to 1.8" hdd and non-standard VGA connector
Cons:
1.8" Slow 4200rpm 60GB drive
2 usb ports
requires VGA dongle
110
Pros:
2.5" HDD
VGA port
3 usb ports
Cons:
Thicker
Not 100% Leopard compatible
I revamped my 1139NR. I did the following upgrades:
-Swapped 60GB Drive For 32GB Runcore 1.8" PATA SSD
-2GB RAM
-Added Broadcom Crystal HD Decoder
I love my Mini 1000 better than my Toshiba NB200 and Asus N-10J. It's beautiful, fast and easy to type on. Did I mention 1080p mkv with MPC-HC using the Broadcom Crystal HD?

Does this have an English keyboard? I bought a refurb 1139NR that was returned to Yonge/Dundas Toronto FS open box for $149. Totally YMMV, but couldn't pass it up. Totally working with 10.6.1 Leopard.
But it only has a 3-Cell battery. :S But still. Not sure this is worth $100 more, especially if it has a Bilingual Keyboard.

This has a bilingual keyboard. If yours is a 110-1139NR, you can buy this and swap it for an English keyboard (http://cgi.ebay.ca/NEW-HP-MINI-110-Keyboard-US-Layout-Black-Original_W0QQitemZ370248812555QQcmdZViewItemQQptZP CA_Mice_Trackballs?hash=item56348c880b). Sigh! I should have realized that this would happen: I have been waiting for the next crop of netbooks to arrive -- the ION-based ones -- and they (i.e. HP 311) are currently priced similar to what the non-ION ones were when they came out (i.e. $400-ish). And now the original crop have great deals like this one! If I wait for the ION ones to drop, something else will be even better, but higher-priced :)

all 10in netbooks in Canada has this resolution though Need to go to those 11.6in models to get a higher resolution.
For $250 with 6 cell, its a decent price. I just don`t like how the 6 cell sticks out.

Hmmm...I wonder what 'risks' are involved in purchasing a 'refurbished' netbook from FS? I am very surprised by the large number of them that are available -- does this mean that *hundreds* were returned as being unwanted by the original purchasers?
EDIT: The new count at FS was 66, and now it has jumped to 336! Wow -- there must have been a tonne of these in a warehouse somewhere! And to make things even more complicated, the 'better' 2140 is now also on sale:

Mine arrived Tuesday, and I thought that was quick shipping for once. However, they gave me a 3-cell battery instead of 6-cell... WTH. Even on the box it says 6-cell, and I double check the description on the site.
I'm going to see if I can get the battery exchanged in the store if not I'm going to return it. Reading the policy the web-only order can only be returned and not exchanged in-store, and will probably take another week to get a ticket processes and shipped back. It's probably faster to order another one, and return this one.
As this is my first time getting refurb. from FS I'm not impressed.

The battery meter (on Windows 7 anyways) just shows % remaining, no estimated time. But I did install a bunch of software, updates and drivers and had the harddrive chugging away the whole time for a good couple of hours or so and the battery level was still in the high 70% range.

I took it to the store, and asked if I can return it from what I read from their web-only, you can return in store just no exchange. They CSR said since they gave me the wrong product it would be "incomplete" so I can't return it in store for refund. I called up number listed on their website and they finally gave me a RMA to return, and refund so that I can re order... I guess another week...

It comes in an HP box, fairly well padded. Overall, it's pretty good condition, just need to make sure you get the right battery. So far I've been the unlucky one. Just make sure the battery sticks out since it's 6 cell. mine doesn't and I'm shipping it back.

Which hp netbook is best for leopard? Or is an msi wind a better choice?
HP Mini 1000 has full compatibility with Leopard and Snow Leopard (I'm running 10.6.1 on my 1139NR right now). The 110's Wifi doesn't work with Snow Leopard I think.
Not sure re: MSI Wind.
HP Mini Refurbs seem like a bit of a crapshoot. Some have received a 3-Cell on this machine that's advertised as a 6-cell. I have an 1139NR and the box says Anti-glare, and I've been through two of them and both have glossy screens. Who knows.
uncle_ned
Nov 14th, 2009, 05:21 PM
One more thing to point out. Finding the right cable for the Mini's VGA port can be a challenge. They seem to be in short supply (HP and Amazon are out of stock, for example). Avg price seems to be about $25 plus shipping, if you find them. Something to keep in mind in case you plan on hooking up to a tv, external monitor or projector.

Well I got this net book today, and so far it's good...debating on getting the hp 2140 instead. It has a matte screen and it has a sim card slot behind the battery. It looks new beside for some scratches on the bottom. I'm not sure if this is normal but when I plug in and out my headphones it crackles?
Last month I ordered the hp mini 1139 and it had the glossy screen, but it had bad audio problems.

Received mine today, came with 6 cell,
not bad appearance, but not as good as the 8.9 HP refurbished i bought from FS last time.
The serial number label at the bottom is obviously damaged, it has been peeled off and accidentally ripped probably due to replacing the bottom housing and reused the same label. The left touchpad button is kind of loose, dummy SD card for SD slot is missing, netbook top does not have plastic protector on it. I guess that's the high standard of QC they have.
For the price I paid for, I am just going to keep it since i use external mouse and I don't look at bottom, but I expected a more professional refurbished unit even for a cheap netbook from HP.

My refurb crapped out today. I bought a 2 gb stick of ram, came home and shutdown the Mini to install the ram. Machine froze while shutting down. I discovered that I couldn't find my tiny screwdriver so decided just to reboot. Major issues. Wouldn't load at first, then loaded real slow but nothing worked. The screen was screwed up, too. Took it back to FS and bought a new Mini for $40 more (because I want the full year warranty -- these things are flaky).
