Just ordered this last week for a few pounds more. Too bad they don't have price protection for amazon UK as far as I can tell. Still, worth every penny. Anyone considering buying this should go for it, it will not disappoint.

Depending on Credit Card conversion rates, this should only be $32-34 :D
Well, provided we don't get nailed by customs ;) But even with a $15 customs charge, $49 is a hell of a deal :)
I really don't see this getting cheaper than $29.99 in Canada come boxing day, but even that's unlikely.

I've been gouged on 'brokerage' and duty fees in the past - up to $20 for a $5 item. I really hope this isn't over $5-$10.

Nov 3rd, 2009, 05:32 PM
You probably get scammed because a $5 item should be tax exempt.
I watch it once, was nice but not worth the $40 bucks to buy and let it sit on the shelf.

I'm with you, the only time I've been dinged for duties/brokerage is when the company ships UPS, ever since I started avoiding people who ship with them I haven't been charged since. If I cannot find the item else where I just contact the seller and ask if they will ship with someone else and I'll even pay a bit more and it works out. Ordered some auto parts a few years ago that were $89 got charged $150 in duties/brokerage with UPS. Ordered auto parts last week for $100, charged no duties was shipped via US Postal Service / Canada Post

Item was shipped via Deutsche Post DHL. There is another thread which posted the previous deal and there was quite a bit of discussion about getting hit by duties. Some customers who got their item shipped by DHL did get by duty but there is always some chance i guess. I luckily didn't get hit by duty as far as i understand since the mail person didn't ask for the extra shipping costs. Hope that helps a bit.

"Dear Customer
Thank you for contacting Amazon.co.uk.
The discounts we offer for items on our website do vary from time to time.
I've checked your order #202-1742567-4409159 and found that we now offer a greater discount on "Planet Earth: Complete BBC Series [Blu-ray]" than at the time you placed your order.
Unfortunately, we cannot extend a refund to you for the difference between the original price and the lower price you saw posted on our website.
While we don't always beat the best available price on every product, we do offer deep discounts on many thousands of items. From time to time, prices on some items will change due to special offers from suppliers and manufacturers or our inventory and sales volumes. When we can offer a lower price for new purchases we will, but we cannot extend these discounts to completed orders.
In this case, You can either refuse the delivery or return the item back to us for full refund.
If you still wish to receive these items, we would suggest that you return to our website and place a new order." >:(
So much for "completed order", I didn't even get the package yet! Guess I'll refuse the package if it gets hit with customs and accept it if it doesn't (refund-shipping+shipping a second time would kill the deal for me).

This is a region free Blu-Ray, it will play on any Blu-Ray player.
Some current estimates suggest 70% of available Blu-ray (movie) discs from the major studios are 'region-code-free' and can therefore be played on any Blu-ray Disc player, in any region.

This is a region free Blu-Ray, it will play on any Blu-Ray player.
I feel the whole Region code thing is a BIG failure. It didn't work for DVDs and will not work for Blu-ray. Unless you are using a PS3 that is.
But there are several Blu-ray players that are region free sold out there. Most locked standalone players from good companies also have hidden codes to make them region 0 (region free). You just have to do some research to get the good players.

Actually, this set isn't the best to test out your system, it's recorded in 1080i for some reason. Check the back of the box set. I was wondering why this doesn't look as good as other Bluray movies I've seen...

FYI,
Both the Blu-ray and HD DVD versions feature high-definition transfers in 1080p resolution (though they are labelled as 1080i on the packaging). As for the standard definition sets, all versions use Attenborough's narration.

I noticed that the box did state that it was in 1080i, and I also noticed that the video is not as sharp as other nature documentaries I have seen, so I assumed what was printed.
So basically, based on what people say on those other forums, the video quality on this particular box set isn't the greatest either.
Sorry for the mix up.

Just adding my experiences. Thanks for the heads up OP, as I forgot about this deal a while back, when I didn't have a BR player.
Anyhow, paid by Visa and chose the default shipping that was offered. Got auto conf on the day purchased, then on the next business day (EU time) received an email about it being dispatched. 5 business days later (or 1 week) it arrives in my mailbox, as most people have experienced - therefore no duties. Just wanted to share this to anyone still wondering about extra fees. I'm wondering if those fees will be applied if you want it shipped faster? Anyways, thanks again OP.

I didn't order Planet Earth (came close) Yet i did order John Woo's Red Cliff instead and now have it in my Blu-ray collection. (no fees or anything) The movie is getting a US theatrical release i think this Friday or next and a shorter cut. The thing is 4 1/2 hours long.
Anyways another awesome UK deal from them is Band of Brothers @ 17.98 or roughly $32 Cnd

Quick question. Given that these have been purchased in the UK, they are for the PAL system of PAL format, is that problematic when our TV's aren't running on PAL or are the DVD's region-less and the format is irrelevant?
Rene13
Nov 18th, 2009, 03:36 PM
Actually, the Planet Earth dvd is listed as wide-screen and region-less. It is the new dvd that has yet to be released, "Life", that is PAL. I guess I could apply my previous question to the DVD "Life". I'm assuming it wouldn't work, but maybe someone can shed some light on this.

I think the Blurays are identical - PAL and NTSC doesn't matter anymore. Not 100% sure of this but I bought the Harry Potter blurays previously from Amazon UK and they played perfectly.

The British Blu-ray version is in 1080p even though the box says 1080i. Wikipedia has documented this pretty clearly.
Get the British version, since the 5th disc is also a Blu-ray. The American Blu-ray version doesn't seem to come with a 5th disc. The American DVD version does come with a 5th disc (The future of Planet Earth) and I believe it is exclusive to that edition. (Needless to say, it's not HD.)

I paid $13.xx for Band of Brothers and Planet Earth. It's shipped by Canada Post's Priority service inside Canada. I think the delay was due to the review by the customs. I am having several shipments from around the world, and all of them are later than I expected.

It would seem I got really lucky on delivery. I ordered Band of Brothers on November 25 and despite a slightly higher price I also ordered Planet Earth. They both showed up today (I'm in Vancouver) and there was no extra costs. My total price including shipping and exchange rate was $73.89. BTW, the band of brothers blurays work fine even though the UK site says region 2.

Dear Customer,
Thank you for contacting Amazon.co.uk and for bringing this to our attention.
In addition to a wide selection of items, one of our aims at Amazon.co.uk is to provide a convenient and efficient service; in this case, we have not met that standard. Please accept our sincere apologies.
It does appear that something may have gone awry with the delivery of your order - the package should have reached you by now.
I have placed a new order for the same item to be sent to the same delivery address.
We will post it to you as soon as possible at no additional charge.
If the original package should arrive afterwards, please keep the item with our compliments, as the cost of return of the package is prohibitively expensive in this case. Perhaps you would like to donate it to a charity in your area if you feel it would be appropriate to do so.

Just got mine today and am loving the Blu-Ray. The only flaw with either this disc or LCD tv's in general is the production of the differing shades of black, especially in the caves. The picture actually becomes fuzzy from time to time when it is pressed to produce blacks in the caves, on disc two. Though, that may be some of the remnants of the non-HD film that is apparently used throughout the film on a small scale.
My dispatch date was Nov 19th, and it was supposed to arrive on December 4th. It arrived today on the 8th, so about two business days later. I'm glad I didn't just to conclusions and request another disc. The price was so competitive I just wouldn't feel right doing that.
For those interested in Life, I ordered a copy from them today as I received news that it has worked on some individuals region A players. In addition, no one has stated that it doesn't work. Therefore, perhaps it is encoded in a way that allows A players to play the disc, as the region is apparently not listed on the box anywhere. I've decided to take the chance and hope it works for me as well. If not, I always have an ebay account and it's not like the demand for this DVD is going anywhere.

Im not sure if that is from SD or if it has to do with the lighting in the caves, sometimes when they are filming in low light condiditons or with night vision you see that sort of thing happening.

For all of us who will potentially receive 2 BR, we did not wait 2 business days after the estimated date of arrival... we waited at least 10 business days (14 calendar days) later and Amazon actually told us to wait until Dec 2 to contact them back and that is when they decided to send us another copy.

I finally got my first copy... Its now Dec 8th. It was supposed to arrive Nov 19th. The statement on the package (I HAD TO PAY THE ****** GOVERNMENT 8.55$ EXTRA) says they started looking at it around my original received date. They shipped it out after that on the 25th of November. It took OUR mail system that long to get it here for me. It really is unacceptable. I dont mind paying the GST and PST, no cares at all about that. But then the ****ers toss on a 5$ handling fee for delaying my package 2-3 weeks. It makes no sense at all, and I guess at least I might get a free (yeah right, not after another 9$ fees from The gov) and then will delay the arrival of the replacement until sometime in January.
I wish there was some recourse we could send back to customs other than a little letter or email that won't change ****.

Nothing for me yet either. Ordered on Nov 3rd, expected delivery date was Nov 20th.
I had contacted Amazon and they were sending out a replacement which is supposed to arrive by Dec 18th which is now cutting it pretty close to Christmas.
I saw someone else saying that asking for a replacement isn't right, but just to be clear I waited until Dec 2nd before emailing them about it (two weeks past the estimated date). Even then, I never asked for a replacement, I just asked if they could please check into it as it was supposed to be a Christmas gift. They offered to send the replacement and suggested if I get two copies that I donate one to charity (which is a nice idea).
If people were intentionally tricking Amazon into sending two copies, then it would be dishonest, but I haven't see that happening.

That's essentially what I was referring to, I'd be pretty upset if it was weeks past by arrival date and it hadn't arrived.
It's funny that everyone takes up that discussion rather than the one that specifically mentions a potential issue with the disc. I can't seem to figure out why the picture gets "fuzzy" or "snowy" when it pans out on the desert scenes and in the caves, also the some scene with the limestone. I guess maybe nothing is perfect, but I've been trying to fix this issue. Reducing the Digital Noise Reduction didn't really help, neither did switching from PS3's 24hz playback setting to 60hz.

It's originally a region B title, so maybe it has 50Hz content (part of the whole PAL thing). I think that playing 50hz at 60hz introduces judder. Try to find that setting on your PS3 and you'll have to determine if your display synchronizes to 50Hz, maybe that will work. Either way I'd love to hear back because I have a PS3 too, but haven't bought this title yet.
I think most region B titles have movies encoded in 24p or video in 60Hz, but there are exceptions, and I know more then a few have the supplements in 50Hz.

Yes it does get handed over to Canada Post, and mine didn't incur any duties. In addition, it was listed as 23 pounds, not the original sale price.
And to respond to those who don't consider this to be a good deal, well, I still saved money at that price.
On the topic of the snowy and fuzzy images, I believe it is dependent on certain scenes and images. I've tried manipulating a bunch of setting to no avail. At the end of the day, this is one of the earlier releases in the blu-ray movement and it only affects roughly 1-5% of the viewing experience by my estimates. It's really not that big of a deal, my only concern was that it was either my tv, ps3 or HDMI cable, as I haven't tested digital tv yet. Though, I have no issues with PS3 games, so that shouldn't be the issue.
Having also put in an order for the Life Blu-Ray, I believe I have just lost $57.00 and counting if I incur duties. They don't seem to respond well with PS3's due to their PAL format, though they are regionless. If it doesn't work and anyone here has a regionless Blu-ray player that is compatible with pal and wants to take it off my hands, drop me a line. But for now, I'm hoping that it will work, for some unexplainable and fortunate reason.

So you're using the PS3 for playback? I have watched the entire series on my PS3 using the full boxed set from Costco and never noticed anything like this and that's on a LCD projector.
I do know that contrast ratio has always been a big deal with LCDs. Depending on your TV, you could have some problems with dark scenes.
According to Wikipedia, NTSC blu-rays use 59.94i, 24p or 23.976p for 1920x1080 content. All other regions use 50i or 25p, so you're right about there being a difference in frame rate. I think most, if not all, LCD TVs can accept NTSC and PAL signals though, as all mine are capable of it.
Once Christmas is over with (and assuming I receive my order) I'll compare the two sets using the cave discs and see if I notice any difference.

I finally got mine today, along with a bill for $6.24 for customs. I dont mind paying the GST, but this $5 ******** fee I can live without. I'd like to give a nice big f-u to Customs along with Canada post for delaying my package and charging me for it.

lucky for me, i didn't have to pay any duties. but it did take forever to reach. I got my planet earth after 3 weeks of their ETA. Received band of brothers together which i ordered only 10 days before delivery. No duties on both.
Now eagerly waiting for the replacement to show up hopefully with no duties as well, wouldn't mind paying duties. will make a good gift.

Finally got mine. $13.07 for taxes and handling. :( Looks like it was Amazon's fault for overstating the value. Not sure if it was my first or second package.
Tested it out to look for the quality problems someone mentioned earlier:
First, it plays perfectly fine and my Sony BDP-S550 shows it is playing 24P content, so I guess it automatically converts it from 25P (PAL). Looks as expected during fast motion.
Second, the Caves episode does have some random noise in the really dark scenes if I look closely. When sitting at a distance, it's not noticeable eventhough I know it's there, so for me this isn't a problem at all. Also, my player has noise reduction options, so when I set those all to Auto, it practically eliminates it even when looking up close.
Overall not bad -- I just wish I didn't get hit with so much by customs. Oh well, still not a bad deal.

So was it worth the extra $15 for one extra disc when you could have bought it for $35 when FS had it on sale.
According to this forum, the 5th disc is not even part of the Planet Earth series. It was part of the BBC Nature World Series and it is about snow leopards. And there is already a short segment on snow leopards in the 4 disc set.
So an extra $15 for an extended segment on snow leopards.

Odd, I looked on FS's website a week or so back when I was looking at buying this and didn't see the series there (just checked again and still don't see it). They have the set with another Earth series for $109, but that's it. I picked two up at BB for $50 which I thought was a great deal at the time...

I guess someone I know is going to receive a nice Christmas gift.

A friend of mine showed me this series on DVD. I was so impressed I couldn't wait to purchase the Blu-Ray version and watch it at 1080p resolution. It turns out that not every scene is filmed in high definition, which is understandable given the conditions of some of the filming. What REALLY disappointed me about this version, however, is that much of the content is missing! The DVD version has a short documentary piece after each section that shows how the filming was done. This is actually some of the most interesting content. It's incredible, for example, how many days a photographer spent hiding in a blind to film a rare bird in the Amazon. When I got the Blu-Ray set I searched and searched but all this "making of" content is not included!

Not sure if I'm just fortunate with duties or what the deal is, but I received Life today on blu-ray without any duties. My luck however ran out when I attempted to play it on my PS3. As expected, it didn't work and now I'll either have to find a Samsung blu-ray player, send it back, or resell it. Such a disappointment, however, it would have been even worse with customs charges.

That sucks. Amazon UK says that it's Exempt from classification, so I figured it would be region free. Thanks for posting this, as I was going to order that in the next week or so.

Not sure if this should be a new thread, so I'll throw it here for now.
Wal-mart in Langley, B.C. had 4 copies of the 4-disk Bluray for $49.83.
Grabbed one.
BTW: It is the David Attenborough version.

My second copy arrived right on the ETA, however I was dinged with $18.81 in duties  Fisrt time, I "only" paid $8. Just because of that I am keeping the copy for myself. Altogether it comes to $62 for 2 copies. Not bad on the market but I would rather pay $35 for 1 copy. Oh well... someone will get a nice last minute Christmas gift.

Not sure if this has been confirmed yet, but unforunately the 5-disc set does not include the "how it was filmed" extras found on the DVD version. The first 4 discs are identical with the fifth just being an extra titled "Natural World" containing episodes on snow leopards and desert lions. The set is much bulkier than the 4-disc version but packaged well.
I probably would have just stuck with my 4-disc set had I known this, but having an extra couple episodes for another $10 isn't a bad deal either.
Also, just as an FYI - I saw the 4-disc set at Walmart for $50 so it appears to be the "going rate" for the series now.

I just ordered it right now. The price shows £24.98 on the item page, but in the cart it shows £21.26 + £3.08 shipping for a total of £24.34. F/X is ~ 1.66 for a total of 40.50 CAD.

I ordered a tonne of those 'earth' blue rays and they are amazing.
I got the yellowstone, galapagos, life etc.
I also ordered blue planet on DVD which was only 9.99. Yes its region 2 but I have a region free dvd player and works great.
Duties for everything were about $30 which is what I expected since it was over $170 after exchange. This works out to a bit more than the GST and PST I would have had to pay anyways - but the $5 handling fee sucks.

For those who enjoyed Planet Earth, here is a potential deal for Life Blu-Ray ($25Euros)
http://www.bangcd.com/productDetail.aspx?prod_id=354522
The site states region UK & Europe. I am assuming this is the same version as Planet Earth purchased through Amazon.uk which worked fine on my Samsung Blu-Ray. I cant find anyone selling this Blu-Ray in Canada. Apparently History Channel is going to release a US version narrated by Oprah airing in March.
BangCD.com offers free worldwide shipping. I am hoping this comes through Canada post similar to amazon.uk Will confirm as soon as I recieve it. The lower cost should allow it to slip through customs with no Duty (on website below, mentions they declare the value of $14.99Euros)
Here are more details of the deal. It also talks about recieving an additional 10% of which I did not try.
