"To tell you the truth, the keyboard is one of the worst I used. I thought the extra keypad on the right would be helpful, but it's not. It screwed up the whole layout. The biggest pain in the butt is the left shift button...it's a tiny square, I don't think i am going going to get used to that. I think the reason for such small shift is because the keyboard is bilingual, and there's some sort of standard to make the shift key small on the bilingual keyboards. However, all the laptops on display at FS (except English only ones, and Dell) have this tiny shift key nonsense."

Thanks for the info, I type fast and can't stand small shift keys. The Gateway site shows big shift keys, are we sure it will be the bilingual keyboard at Staples?

on the site it shows a normal sized shift key on all the images?
also, sometimes small shift keys have a key that you barely use beside it (i.e. ";") if so, you go into the settings and make the ";" have the SHIFT function ;)

us canadians are forced to use the gay-lingual keyboards...its unfortunate really since more then half the time its useless for the common folk and actually quite bothersome
i dont know which settings will change these since i have searched all over, but there are a few programs you can search for the will do key remapping

check the gateway.ca site and you will see the 'current' models (one red and a black one) are selling at this price range as well. . . if you cannot find it a Staples, you can buy direct from Gateway online.

Comparable model:
Gateway® NV5814u (black):
http://www.gateway.com/systems/product/529668289.php
Gateway® NV5815u (red):

Both models are qualified for free Windows 7 (Home Premium version, I think) upgrade:

Good luck RFDers.
Edited: I hope this is in Canada $ as I did a Google search to go to the Gateway Canada site first and then look for the list of Laptop. But when I try to look for stock in retailer, nothing is found with my Postal Code, not sure what happened.

i thought so too. i was still in my refund/return window when the wm deal was posted. i went and bought the wm one to compare.
the wm one actually has a smaller hd, but that wasn't problem. 14" is too small and they weigh about the same. i also found that the 15.6 had better build quality.

Based on specs, it's hard to find a better deal out there: pretty much max HD size, decent CPU and a HDMI port for great connectivity options. Although it's probably GMA4500, it handles 720p/1080i video no problem, and looks spectacular on a large screen. Only other decent option for similar or better performance would be something like a Lenovo R500 where you can up the CPU to something like T8400 for a few dollars, although the standard HD is 160GB - that config's run for <$750 recently, based on the RFD threads.

download the LAUNCH MANAGER driver from the gateway website... the pop ups have nothing to do with the audio drivers... that is if you're looking for the soft vol indicator/wifi on off/bluetooth (even if bluetooth is not included in this model) pop up that appears on screen when you tap function F10 etc.

Yeah, I had the same problem, and then realized that I had disabled the launch manager from startup in msconfig when i was tweaking my system. After re-enabling it, it worked fine.

Don't worry. Gateway couldn't be any worse than Toshiba, HP, Compaq etc. It has good Intel components, Hitachi HD, etc, etc. ONe thing I was not crazy baout was the KB and the casing. There is a known problem with burning Recovery Disks using Gateway Recovry Manager. Error 0x2050 something like that. There is a patch at GTWY website you would need to download. Du to this mishap, FS got many returns.

Has been running update and tweaking it by taking out junk programs.
So far so good. Took me a while to figure out the lights/settings along the top of the keyboard are touchable. I was worry that it has no button to turn off the wireless option but after I touch the Wireless Light it turn on/off.
I was amazed for a bit.
Which is a good program to do some re-mapping of the keyboard on this machine? Anyone has any recommendation? I want to remap that stupid key to a shilff key b/c it was annoying typing and hitting it.

Some PC Mag survey results on reliability and recommendations.
http://www.pcmag.com/image_popup/0,1871,iid=242801,00.asp
Gateway/Acer reliability results are decent. The only companies that perform significantly below average for both reliability rating and repair rates are Dell and HP. Even then, the differences aren't large amongst the mainstream brands. Looking at the "notebooks less than a year old" category, Acer/Gateway their ratings are even better all across the board. You can either interpret that as either short-term reliablity or that Acer/Gateway is recently improving very quickly. I'd bet it's the latter.

This must be an old list. Asus rated higher than Apple in the new data.
Even so, there is something odd about these ratings. They just don't make sense in several places. For example, Apple is top rated in "reliability" but has a fairly average "percentage needing repair." That makes no sense.

It might be. I didn't want to register for the data in PDF, which is probably newer.
The reliability rating is a more subjective one since it's a rating by the owner. I think Mac owners have a higher rate of fanboyism so even if they break just as often as any other notebook, they will be perceived by their owners as being invincible. I would concentrate more on repair rates as an indicator.

Went to look at the laptop at a local staples, seems pretty decent look and design, certainly a lot better than the other laptops they had in that price range and a lot better looking for your average $600 laptop. The outside has a carbon-fiber type look, honeycomb type design with a polished steel strip across the front.
Screen seemed clear, would have been nice to have a higher resolution but I'm sure would influence the price. The smaller shift key (on the left) is odd but not a deal breaker, the mousepad was okay, not a fan of one giant button for mouse (left side = mb1, right side = mb2) but I would only use the integrated pad in dire circumstances anyway.
The on-site "tech" (staples has techs?!) said they haven't heard anything about about Gateway laptops, certainly a lot less problems than HP which he mentioned have recently been in for warranty work (they ship all the warranty stuff out to the depot).
I went home, went on RFD, checked the Staples thread and got a $20 coupon and bought one. Should be delivered to the store tomorrow (even though they did have stock anything you order online comes from a warehouse even if the store has stock).
Hope this helps some people.

The CPUs are for the most part the same, the big difference is the video and the hdd, I would not be using the machine for games and 320gb is more than enough so the $145 is wasted.
The Futureshop model has a much better video card but unless you're gaming there really is no need.
The FS model also comes with Win7 already installed whereas the Staples model comes with Vista and you have to get the Win7 upgrade from Gateway (though you would have 2 legit OS I suppose).

The whole keyboard seems really shifted to the left, including the touchpad. It just feels awkward.

There is a known problem with burning Recovery Disks using Gateway Recovry Manager. Error 0x2050 something like that. There is a patch at GTWY website you would need to download. Du to this mishap, FS got many returns.
Got the same error.. I called Gateway and they sent me all the factory reset CD's for free.. so happy to have a "backup".
