Pretty neat. I actually own a '79 Camaro. Its running perfectly but the body needs a bit of work. Still in decent shape, all things considered.

The new Camaro is too hot to pass up.... But then again no point comparing classic to new. They have their own fans.

For some, yes. You will always have haters of muscle cars just like there will always be haters of the so called "ricers." Both have their own pro's and con's.

But to me, you are right, the new Camaro is unreal. Cant wait until the house renos are done ... the wife said we can get one then :D Of course, "done" is all relative. It might be 5 years until that happens haha

What is it you love about the new Camaro?
The novelty has already worn off me for the "new" Mustang and Challenger.
I'm in the market for a sporty 2+2, and hadnt considered it but am open to be persuaded :) 2+2 is a relatively small category IMO.
Currently my shortlist is the G37s, Audi A5, BMW 650 (used) and Porsche Carrera (used).

Part of it is looks. When I first saw the new design, I immediately loved it. In my opinion, it looks like the 'meanest' car on the road. The front end just looks uber ballsy, more so than the Mustang or the Challenger. I very much like the lines of the car as well. Ok, I dont really like the back end all that much but I can forgive it.

Part of it is nostalgia. My uncle (who has now passed on) always had muscle cars, as did my dad (albeit, many moons ago). My dad owned a '67 and a '69 camaro. I own a '79 and plan to eventually put some work into it. I almost bought a '71 Vette at one point as well.

I also personally find the ride to be pretty smooth. Its not as 'rough' as previous generations, yet is still a bit unrefined. There is plenty of available power at any point, particularly with the V8. The torque is unreal. While some dislike the interior, I personally enjoy it. Its modern yet has some throwbacks to the old times.

Having said all that, the cars you have your list narrowed down to arent in the same category. Yours are mostly luxury sedans that happen to have ton of power as well. They are more refined and 'easy.'

At the very least, I think you should go test drive one. Make sure you get to a highway and let 'er rip. Take it around some hard corners. If its for you, then great. If not, your list of cars is still pretty awesome.

Cool article and the new Camaro awesome! I will admit I did not care for it when I seen it in a mag but it just wows on the street.

I usually don't like domestic cars. However, I like the new Camaro and it turns heads more than G37, 335, and many other sporty coupes. Also, don't forget that it's quite a bit cheaper than the other coupes you mentioned. So, buyers are more likely comparing Camaro, Charger and Mustang. Maybe Genesis coupe.

Nice comparison but you have got some of the info wrong. For instance the 1979 made more torque than you quoted. I am not sure what your sources were but the 350 in 1979 made 270 lb/ft of torque, not 240. The 305 made 240. Not a huge difference but one worth noting.

I think a better comparison would have been against a 69 camaro Z28 rather then a 79.

The 1979 one at least had a SAE net HP rating on unleaded fuel.

One downside I find with the new Camaro is that you can't actually see anything out of it.

x2. The "new" Camaro is just huge and stupid. All hype/flashy looks, the car itself is just mediocre.

Said it about 5 times now at least, but again... This is the first time in my lifetime that I've actually had to say the Mustang is a much better car (comparing current generations).

I had a brand new 1980 Z28...in 1979

I used to be able to use the gas guage as a fan :)

But man it was fun to kick down the peddle and watch the induction doors
on the back of the scoop open up
