Currently I use SmartCash for gas/grocery, and SPG for everything else. As MBNA is discontinuing the SPG card next year, I am looking for a replacement for it.

I need car rental CDW for sure, and the extended warranty feature is also a must.

What cards would you guys recommend (>1% return)? :D

Not a lot of cards offer >1% return especially on non-grocery/gas items.
AMEX Gold was 2%, but it's not offered anymore, though it's still active.

As existing card holders can still use their cards but they no longer accept new applications?

Use the smartcash until SPG has a new card. The rumor posted on FT was that TD will launch an SPG platinum card and existing MBNA SPG cardholders will get the first year waived. If that's even partially true, then that might be the best card.

It also depends how much you spend in a year. Once you go over about 30k, then it's worthwhile to get one of the infinite cards.

Take a look at the Capital One Cash Back Plus mastercard. $59 annual fee (well, it was in the spring It seems to have gone up to $99) means the rewards don't get all that interesting unless your annual purchasing is 30K or more.

1% cash back annually on total purchases up to $10,000

1.5% cash back annually on total purchases between $10,000.01 and $20,000

2% cash back annually on total purchases above $20,000

No limit on the cash back you can earn.

Also offers extended warranty and purchase assurance and car rental CDW. Also delayed baggage benefit, and a few other minor things.
