I have a nephew in Toronto who is on disabilty. He has a computer with a internal modem. Does anyone or can anyone recomend a ISP that will provide him with unlimited access for under $ 20 a month. He would perfer non dial up if possible.

He'll need a new modem for any non-dialup service.

I think $25/mo is probably the cheapest non-dialup he'll find. Many providers have low speed options at that price point.

i heard that they're techsupport is bad,
if you want better tech support you should go with teksavvy (http://www.teksavvy.com/en/index.asp)

but cheapest is probably acanac.

So with his internal modem he would be restricted to only dial up then?

Acanac has the cheapest dsl internet promo for the first year
discounted at $18.95 month but prepaid at $227.40. The regular
monthly term is $39.95 for unlimited up to 5Mb speeds. Preconfigured
modem is $49.95 but refundable if canceled. The dial up is
$9.95 month at 56K speeds unlimited. If he is on ODSP
maybe he can ask the social worker if they would prepay it for him?
Some computers can have wireless adapter cards or usb plug in
but he would still need a dsl modem and wireless router too.
If he is in a shared housing environment, one dsl modem and router
can serve the house wirelessly from 150 to 300ft and share costs.
Families, businesses and groups save money with an unlimited plan
sharing one wireless connection from one location.

He has tried but thanks for the suggestion. That is why he wanted me to ask advice since they refused to do that cause they look at internet, cable and things like that as a luxury.

Then your nephew will have to go dial-up route. 295.ca is the cheapest I know for $2.95 a month.

Edit: Just re-read OP. Dial-up is not an option. But there is no other option for that price under $20..

believe it or not try Bell... I know some users are getting ~$20 a month for 1 mbs.. but it would be DSL, meaning he would need a $15 DSL modem (TP-LINK). Another option would be to find someone else and split a connection via wireless router. The joy a house bound person gets out of a broadband is far in excess of the cost... mentally you globe hop around the world, but he might not see it. The possibilities are endless... and the connection to like minded people is everything.

The boy wants unlimited access. I think he wants more than what he can afford.

This is a bit of a stretch.

Get a HTC touch cell phone, i think bell is offering it for $99 in the hot deals section. Sign up with bell pay as you go, get the $10 per month addon which give you unlimted data to a few select sites and services. Flash the phone with NSFAN rom, it will allow you to tether the phone to a computer and make the data look like you are within the boundaries of the $10 month addon.

I do this with my own HTC touch on a bell pay as you go. I only use it when I need mobile internet. Speed is decent, I am guessing 2-5 times the speed of dialup, depend on the location, reliability of the service is hit or miss.

Also, I would not provide a credit card # to bell, and just use prepaid cards. If bell catches you they may try to charge you credit card for the data.

Best of luck

1. Bumping a year old thread will probably not get you much help.
2. Imelda appears to be a non-active user now.
3. Not advisable to leave your email in a public forum, unless you don't care about spam.
4. Search here for "Acanac", "3Web", "Teksavvy", "Rogers internet retention", "Bell internet retention" for some help regarding cheap internet.
