What do others do in terms of keeping a cell phone number? I currently have a 416-Toronto number, however it I was to go to say Western, would it be best to switch to a London number? How do you deal with summer breaks/coming home?

If you are to call just locally within London/western uni, keep the phone because it'll be charged as local airtime.
I think either way if you get a 519 number or keep the 416 number, the long distance charge will be the same. Or buy a phone card and dial the local number on the back of the card to call home.

Fido doesn't work that way...if you are outside your LCA (local calling area, so if you're 416, it's the GTA) you are charged Long Distance for incoming, out-going, no matter what. Doesn't matter if you call locally in that area..it's still long distance cause you're not in your LCA.
For what it's worth, I managed to get 1000 Long Distance minutes for free after the whole LCA change a month ago. Which is pretty good, my brother is in Hamilton for now and he gets to use his 647 number as much as he wants in Hamilton, no long-distance charges at all.

I go to Western and I've been keeping my 519 # all year around. I have call display, so when people call me in Toronto, I can decline their call and then call them back right away to save on long d.
Much easier than switching numbers every summer.

I go to Western and I just change my number when I'm in London. So I keep a number for 8 months, and then change for 4 months in the summer.

@Jay Hova
I am currently with fido, and once a month I drive to Windsor. Each time I am there and I call my relative's number (house or cell, windsor number of course), I never got charged LD only local. If i receive a call there or call else where, I would get charged.

Is it just me or does everyone but me own one of these cellular telephone gadgets?

+1 to this. Although I ended up losing my number twice though...

IMO, it's bad to keep on changing your numbers, when you will have to contact your references, professors, employers every summer. Just keep your 519 # throughout the year and pay some long d fees. Much more convenient when people can actually reach you.

Thats incorrect. If you travel to a different area and make a call that is considered local to wherever you physically are at the moment, then it is a local call. So if I travel with a 416 number to Vancouver and call a 604 number, it is a local call. However all calls back to your home area (i.e. to 416 numbers) and all incoming calls are considered LD.

I have 2 phones. It's a buck or two a month to hold your number for the months your away at school.

Who holds the number for $1-2 a month? I wouldn't mind keeping my 416 on VoIP and my uni number on the cell.

So, you just keep the same billing address and everything during the 8 months you switch area code?

Well, the billing address is my home address because my mom pays my bill...

Lucky that your mom pays the bill, wish my parents would do that for me. Work + school = living through hell but kinda happy I am learning how hard life is sometime at an early at.

just switch your number, unless you really like your toronto number. I goto school in hamilton, but live in kitchener. I switch my number every may and september without any charges. If you just call in and tell them you're moving to the different area code and you want a new number they won't charge you. :cheesygri:cheesygri:cheesygri:cheesygri

Should add. If you have an Oakville number, it's local to Toronto and Hamilton.
