View Full Version : Need a GOOD obstetrician who delivers at North York General

Alright the doctor I had found who had great reviews at RateMds.com and delivered at North York General is fully booked on my due date (May/10) >:( Not many doctors on that site delivers at this hospital and those who do usually has bad reviews. My had an awful experience when I was pregnant with daugther #1 and would like this pregnancy to go wonderfully without waiting in line for 2-3 hours during each visit. Can anyone suggest a doctor who they dealt with AND delivers at North York General. The reason it needs to be there is I will be staying with my parents during the last few weeks of my pregnancy due to tradition and DD was born their as well so it'll be nice to bring another little monster...I mean angel from the same hospital. :cheesygri
My wish list for the perfect OB would be:
-Delivers at North York General Hospital
-Short waiting times, they actually see you when you make the appointment not 3 hours after.
-Has polite/friendly receptionist (I feel quite strongly about this as they can either make your day or pi$$ you off) And being pregnant I don't need to add more stress to my days.
-The doctor is knowledgeable and takes time to answer any questions/concerns, and maybe even shows up to deliver the baby. (Unlike my last OB)
Am I asking for too much? We have waited almost 8 years after having our first born to have this little one, and I just want everything that went wrong with my last OB to corrected with this one.

Unfortunately, I don't have any recommendations for you that fits within your criteria, but based on our experience with our first baby, our OB Dr. Jeremy Wong, would *not* be a good choice, even though he is an excellent, highly-skilled and very knowledgeable doctor.
Reasons:
- Typical long waits - Appointments are booked half an hour before the OB is scheduled to arrive in the mornings, so right off the bat they are half an hour behind already. And if the OB is called into the hospital for an emergency, then the poor pregnant women are left waiting in the small waiting room for hours.
- Unfriendly receptionists - Their phone manners are terrible and I always wonder how they can be hired by Dr. Wong when they are so bad?!?
- OB always in a hurry - I understand he is trying to be efficient (and probably wants to clear out the wait that results in scheduling patients half an hour earlier!) but we always have questions to ask, and getting him to not run off after the examination is always a challenge. That said, he is very knowledgeable and he does explain things once you get him talking. And he does try to personally deliver your baby.
Good luck with your search.

you are asking too much! why not try a midwife? might suit your needs better.
pretty much all the chinese OBs will be super busy (Paul Shuen, Man Fan Ho, Dennis Chu, Jeremy Wong).
You could try some of these: Elyse Lackie, Nicholas Pairaudeau, Derek Shiletto, Kirsten Smith
Who have you tried thus far that is not accepting you?
the waiting room game w/ OBs is the same with all of them, pretty much if their patients are delivering, they gotta leave the office. Nothing you can do about that. Also if they aren't on call, and it's past midnight and you deliver, then it'll be whichever OB on call is there (since it's your second one, you might deliver so quickly that your OB doesn't have time to get to the hospital).

That would have been my suggestion...however, for a midwife you may be too late in your search. Usually by a month into your pregnancy it is difficult to find a midwife (or OB) as they book up very quickly.
We did prefer the midwife route experience with our second...

Really? I had more to add to my list but those were the most important ones. :o
I'm not too sure about a midwive as I had a emergency c-section with baby #1 and will likely to just go this route with baby #2. Aren't midwives for more natural birthing methods? I have tried a hand of Ob who I liked from reading previous patients reviews from ratemeds.com and either they are full or do not deliver at North York general. I guess I forgot to mention it doesn't have to be Chinese, as I'm not Chinese myself (south east asian). I was hoping to get some names of good doctors from here but if I don't find something by end of this week I might change my preferred hospital and get a doctor that fits my other requirements.

Not at all... midwives have 'staff access' to specific hospitals. You can have whatever birth you want with a midwife, at home or at the hospital.

I know a few very good OBs at Scarb General hospital if you're willing to go there (one of them is actually a friend of mine).

Hello,
Dr. Wideman is a family doctor who works out of the Sunnybrook family practice. She does her deliveries out of North York General. Though I cannot guarantee her wait times will always be short, she is truly an excellent, compassionate individual who will take time to look after you and your baby.
Down sides: As she works in a teaching practice, there is likely a resident (trainee physician) who will be involved in your prenatal care and delivery.
Good luck.

Thank you, but unfortunately I plan on having a dual care throughout the pregnancy to save traveling time. So I will continue to see my family doctor and will be seen by the Ob around 18 weeks and go in when it's needed and ofcourse during the delivery. This way I can continue to see my great family physician in Ajax (whom I'm glad to have found) and still have a OB whom I can use during the later part of my pregnancy and delivery.
Hoping I have better luck tomorrow calling up some OBs.

I was Dr. Kirsten Smith's patient before switching to midwife. She does deliver at North York General Hospital, her appointments are usually on time or 5-10 minutes late. She does have a friendly/polite receptionist. She does answer your questions but I always felt so rushed with all our appointments. Because of the last criteria, I did switch to midwife but I heard that she's good.
I hope this helps.

Well I managed to get the list of the Obs who deliver at North York General (15-20) I called every single one of them and even begged but they were all full for May, June and some even for July. Wow getting a OB is harder than getting a wedding hall. Well anyways the one that was LAST on my list, which had bad reviews was the only one willing to take me in. So I settled for him. Really disappointed but atleast I'll be delivering at a hospital that is well prepared for c-sections. I guess we should make a appointment for baby #3 we'll have in the next 3 years. Well I plan on having dual care and love my family physician so it's not that bad. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Dr. Robert Nicholson satisfies all the points that you mentioned in the beginning except there is no guarantee that he will be there to deliver. He is an excellent doctor with a lot of positive reviews on ratemds.com and our experience is also very positive till now. He alweays meets you on time and answers all the questions. I think the reason with North York doctors not accepting new patients easily is that the area is all surrounded by so many condos and highly populated so the hospital does not have enough beds to accomodate so many patients at one time. We also had a hard time getting a doctor but finally managed to get Dr. Nicholson.

I had a really hard time finding an OB for my second pregnacy as well as my OB for pregnancy #1 i did not like at all. All the highly recommended OBs at NYGH were already booked solid (and i was looking when i was 8 weeks pregnant, right after my initial appointment with my GP). Anyhow, after much research i figured a midwife would best suit my needs and i am thankful for that decision. The midwife group i go to all deliver out of NYGH.

My understanding is that as soon as any drugs are requested, a MD has to take over the delivery. So in essence, even if you have a hospital birth with a midwife, it has to be "natural" if you want her to be in charge.

Incorrect (common myth though). You can have whatever drug you want with a midwife. For example, when you get an epidural there is only a temporary transfer of care while the anesthesiologist is performing the injection, after which your midwife regains primary care and delivers your baby.

Hello,
I am 8 weeks present and sick at home with pneumonia. I have been having such a hard time finding an obstetrician who delivers at North York General. I was so happy to come across this forum. Would you be so kind as to help me find an obstetrician by forwarding me the list you had? It is so hard to get names for some reason!

I was trying to get in at North York General as well but no luck so I settle for Sunnybrook. My ob is very on time (maximum 30 minutes wait time, usually just 10-15 minutes wait time). The way I see is that every appointment is only about 3-5 minutes, really no point to wait for 2-3 hours for each appointment. I am sure all the obs/doctors are trained well and should deliver my baby just fine :)

Officially he is a high risk OB but he takes regular patients if you don't have any issues. Delivers at NYGH, excellent hospital and maternity ward by the way
We had out 2nd there, our 1st was at markham stouffville we did not have a good experience there...NYGH is so wonderful to have a baby at, and all the nurses were spectacular
Shilletto is wonderful but I know he books up very quickly, if you are past 8 weeks I wouldn't expect to get in but call and see. All the staff and reception are great, hardly any wait times for our appointments and he usually does not work on Saturdays at the hospital but came in to deliver our son, that was a great and wonderful surprise.
I cannot say enough about the compassionate and knowledgeable care I received at his office and he has great staff...when you go visit his office it is ALWAYS full of chocolates and flowers and gifts from other patients. That should tell you enough, I gained enough weight eating chocolates from his office every appointment I had!!!
Good luck, you can't go wrong with NYGH!

Dr. Sheun is too busy. Not only he delivers baby, he is also a cancer specialist and does operation. It is hard to get him to be OB these days.
My first born was with him. My 2nd one was with Jeremy Wong because we could not get Paul Shuen. My mom is with him for cancer treatment. He operated my mom twice. His appointment time (for my mom) is pretty good. His appointment arrangement was pretty bad with my first born 19 years ago.

+1. Dr Shiletto delivered my son exactly 1 year ago today! He was excellent, very detailed and kind. I always booked morning appt and they were always prompt, I think I only had 1 appt that was late and only by 15 minutes. His receptionist was very professional and knowledgable. I ended up having a scheduled c-section due to full breach and stayed at NYG for a week and the staff were amazing. The scar of my c-section healed beautifully and quickly, I was out shopping and going to restaurants within 2 weeks :) Good luck and congratulations!

This has actually worked before for an NYGH OB:
Find someone you know who have seen the OB before and have a good relationship with his receptionist. Ask that person to call for you and see if the receptionist could help (may want to make up a good story first). There are occasionally some spaces because of miscarriages.
Remember if you really like your OB, make sure you befriend the receptionist - she has a lot of power !! Address her by her first name. Express your thankfulness every time you see her even if she is not in a good mood. Show your empathy when she is very busy. Try to make a joke with her and make her laugh. Bring a gift and your baby picture for her after birth. This will pay off in a long run........
Also... do the same for your pediatrician receptionist......:)
I also agree that the nurses at NYGH are excellent !!

I was wondering if you don't currently have an ob and are pregnant, do you have to wait to be referred to one or can you just randomly call up offices and ask for an appointment. I am currently alomost 7 weeks pregnant and I have an appointment with me family doctor in a week.
And I will be looking for doctor that delivers at north york so if you have recommendations that would be great.

I had Dr. Man Fan Ho for my first. He is the head OB/GYN at NYGH. He is an excellent doctor, soft spoken and very professional. Never makes you feel stupid even if you ask many questions. Best of all, he doesn't over book and is very on time with his appointments. Highly recommended!
My family doctor asked which OB I would like to be referred to. As I did my research beforehand already, I told my family doc which OB I want and they make the referral for me.

I finally had a chance to see my family doctor yesterday confirming the pregnancy and she is sending a referral to an OB for me. After researching OBs online - two of them stood out for me and I went with Dr. Man Fan Ho. Hopefully this doctor is accepting patients. I am assuming his english is good too.
My doctor said if I don't get an appointment within the month she will do the next appointment to make sure I get my ultrasound at the 11-14 weeks.
I didn't want to ask family members who their ob is to reccomend one as my husband and I decided not to tell any family members (including parents) until after the first ultrasound/first trimester.

Schiletto :). My son was born in 2000. My family doctor recommended him. When I ended up with gestational diabetes I already had my specialist. Great doctor and it's so nice to see others in this thread who had him and also had great experinces with him. With my second I was in Mississauga and didn't really like the set up there with there High Risk Clinic. Missed Schiletto.

Our kid is due at the end of October and we're using Dr. Kang above. I find her very nice, I don't think we've ever had to wait more than 10-15 minutes later than our appointment is scheduled. The receptionist is also very friendly as well.
My wife told me that she has read that Dr. Kang doesn't say much which is true. She gives you the results of her findings and answers any questions that you have and takes time answering them. The appointment is usually pretty quick, just the way I like it.

well I heard back from my doctor and my referral to Do Ho was refused as he is full already. the receptionist said I should have come in earlier for my doctors appointment because OBs fill up quickly. however my doctor was on vacation when I had called to make my appointment and I didnt' want to wait 2 hours at the clinic (same office) so I decided to wait 2 weeks for the appointment. Maybe it is was a mistake on my part.
I just gave a list of about 3 doctors to the receptionist. Hopefully I get in with one of them. Or maybe I should say hopefully I get in at north york.

I don't think Dr. Ho opts for more complicated cases. I think that goes more for Dr. Shuen. I know a couple of other people who had Dr. Ho (myself incl) and we're not really complicated cases.
I think he just books up quickly b/c he doesn't take in that many patients. Hence the short wait times for appointments b/c he doesn't over book.

good news. I just spoke with my doctor and one of my referrals got accepted. I have an appointment in September with Dr Alexandra Lam. The reviews on RateMD seem mixed. Does anybody have any information on her? thanks.
