View Full Version : TTC Subway Car Seating Preferences

What do you prefer, the orange couch style seats or the more common red metal seating?
I don`t use the subway as often anymore as it makes more sense to drive given the price hikes and the frequency of my use of the TTC. However, I`m interested to know if anyone else has the same preference as me which is for the couch style seats.
Edit: I am asking this question from a comfort perspective, I as well quite frankly don`t care about the colour.

I don't think it matters if the seat I'm sitting on is red or orange. Considering those things are, on average, carrying God knows what, I'll go for whichever is the cleanest.

Yes, while they are aesthetically unpleasing, I find them to be much more comfortable.

True, I meant my question from a comfort perspective though.

i don't care either way. what i don't like are the red seats with the metal rests attached. the ones that face perpendicular to the horizontal chairs always bangs against my knees

What happen to the orange one? I was able to see them twice last year but then afterward, I didn't see it anymore. Who got pics of the orange seats, they were very stylish! Ikea-built, lol!

So you like the plush seats, honestly I would never ever sit on them do you know how filthy they are :cheesygri
I did seat cleaning for 1 month just with an air hose, Id stand at one end of the car and with the aair hose Id blow on them with one door open and all the dust would get sucked out. I couldnt see the other end of the car. In the summer time they clean them with this special vacum/water and if you only knew how black and dirty the water is. I live around Islington/Bloor and when I go downtown I stand all the way no way Im sitting on those.
The best seats were those old orange bench ones.....but with all the slashing people did to them it wasnt smart having them thats why we went to the all plastic ones and now the plush ones.
we should use the all plastic ones they never tear or rip and they cant be destroyed. even thoe these plush ones are fire proof youd be amazed how many people still try to burn them lol

I prefer the red seats, although they appear dirtier than the orange.
The trains with orange seats always seem to be colder (maybe because the trains are older). I also don’t like how on orange seats you can slide more easily so any jerky movements will make the person beside you squash you if you are on the wrong

luckily i only use the yonge/university line now, i haven't seen a orange couch for a long time. when i do see it on the bloor line, it looks dirty and worn out.. so naturally i prefer the red seats.
red seats also evenly divides up the seat, so overweight people realize if they are taking up too much room and be more courteously.

I've never seen these orange couches you speak of and I take the yonge-university line during weekdays. I have only been on the ones with the red seats.

Orange ones. They may look fugly as hell but they're comfy.
Also, anyone notice that the cars with the orange seats have got these huge ventilators on the roof that look like they're going to fall off?

I personally prefer the orange ones (don't care if they're stylish or not), but I would like them better if they had put them in some of the newer trains. It is obvious from appearance that they are on the older trains only.
I would think the orange ones would be easier to wipe off and clean, however from their appearance, they're also easier to cut/tear as many of the ones I have seen are damaged (accidentally from wear and tear in some cases and intentionally in others).

Either one. I always try to get the seat closest to the front of the first car so I can watch as the train enters/exits stations and goes through the tunnels. I guess it might suck if I ever saw someone jump right in front of my eyes.

The ones with the orange benches seem to be only on the Bloor line. Anybody remember the blue ones? Exact same as the orange, but blue.

The train with blue bench seats you are talking about are the "H1s" I believe. The train with the orange bench seats are the "H4s". The H5s, the ones with the yellow doors on the inside running on the Yonge line, had bench seats before they were replaced with the current seats.
I personally prefer the orange seats.

The blue seats were on the decomissioned Monntrealer trains. Both the blue and orange seats were slashed so often that it was decided to stop making them. Presently there are still 6 trains which are just used in rush hour that have the old bench style orange seats. Not only were the old seats slashed and torn but on a few occasions they were also set on fire. Thats why the red fire proof seats are going to be in the new trains............that is if we ever get them;)

Funny but I always avoid getting into one closest to the front because I think if the train were to crash that you'd have a better chance of survival if you're further away from impact. I don't know it's just me - lost a friend in the Spadina crash years ago.
I've never paid attention to the seats. Being able to find a seat is what I look for.

IMHO, I think the orange ones look old and rundown and outdated.
But mannn are they comfy as fcuk!
Red ones look nice and trendy? and like more modern but they arent as comfortable!
I was told the orange ones arent made as much anymore cause punks take knives and cut them up and take the stuffing out, hence why the red ones exist, u can't really do much to them except maybe write on them with marker and stuff

Actually the upholstery section still makes the orange seats. Its just a board with sponge and orange vinyl.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who notices this.
Is there a reason why trains on the Bloor Danforth line look so dumpy? Is it because the TTC perceives people riding that line are poorer so they don't give a sh*t?
Even if it's the same model train, the ones on the Bloor Danforth line always look dirtier, dimmer, generally look like no one has cleaned the damn thing for months. While the ones on the Yonge line look crystal clean.
And +1 for the old Orange seats. It's like stepping into a time zone back to the 70s. They're only on the Bloor Danforth line and are going to be taken out of service this or next year.
And as for the Blue couch seats, I saw one a week ago at Yonge Station midnight. It wasn't in service, but it was a work car with a bunch of guys inside. Surprised those 1960s trains are still able to run without falling apart :P

I think it's usually cheaper to maintain an older, durable unit than to replace with something brand new. You still see those old GM buses around every so often.

Two years ago I got on a old GM bus with the old black and red vinyl seats like riding on a cloud.

I like the "seats" on the MTR in HK. Stainless steel benches with butt imprints, they remind me of urinals in NYC.
My favourite TTC train asthetically are the 1980s ones that run on the Yonge line with the molded seats, similar to the red ones, that are orange and brown vinyl. The lighting is dimmer and with the orange doors and brown floors they create a nicer atmosphere. I find the newer ones are too grey and bright, its like being in a classroom.
As far as comfort, yes, the orange benches are way more comfortable.
I don't take the subway very often, but I did last week and it was an orange bench subway on the bloor line going each way, I should buy a lottery ticket.

do u guys (like me) enter the ttc depending on which subway cart is closest to your exit of your destination station? (for eg, Southbound to Union, go to end of subway if you want to exit subway to Union streetcars the quickest & Northbound to Dundas, go to 3/4 end of subway to exit Dundas exit/entrance)

The orange ones, while uglier, are easier to keep clean, just a wipe with a disinfecting agent. It is important to remember that basically anyone with poor personal hygiene sit in both sets and it is not known how frequently or effectively the seats are cleaned. You ever smell those homeless guys/gals who reak or urine or crap on the subway? They sit in these chairs and the bacteria/viruses that they carry are transferred to the poles and seats they come in contact with. I try to stand when ever on the subway, that way my pants and coat/shirt do not pick up any germs during my travels.
Sometimes I'll put a newspaper on the seat and sit on that. There are just too many unhygienic passengers IMHO.

Do you pick up after yourself if you do that? I see way too many ppl throwing garbage and leaving Metro newspaper in the subway and expect a clean subway

Are you my mother? No I just use newspaper that I lying around. Besides, garbage on the subway results in jobs for the cleaning staff. Also, some people 'recycle' the paper while reading it after someone else leaves it.

Yes, this is your mom and you should clean up after yourself.
This mentally of "leaving for the cleaning staff" is why our subways are so dirty.

I remember the blue seats in the subway that had much higher, a bit smaller and 'rounder' windows.
The orange seats nowadays do seem to lack that extra cushion when they were newer. Definitely more comfortable, but sometimes, feels like I slide in them depending how fast the subway stops or turns.

the orange ones are much better when it comes to comfort and its easy to clean.
plus they help when one has a big butt and wont fit on the red bucket velvet seats. they cover at least 1.5 ot the 2-seaters and the next person can only sit beside them using half their butt cheek on whats left of the available space. :cheesygri

Does anyone remember those brown seats they testedin the late 90s?
It was basically the same as the red cloth ones, except there was no cloth and it was pure cold metal. The seats were HORRIBLE. Thank god they didn't go through with them.
And the blue seaters. Blast from the past :P
