Simple Windows 7 burning question help pls

Brand new HP laptop, AMD, 3 gig RAM.

I tried to burn some photos onto a DVD disc. Followed the Windows 7 steps:

1. Insert blank DVD-R
2. Burn as USB key
3. Drag and dropped photos (I dragged about 3.7 gigs)
4. Burn

Then, a windows popped up saying not enough space, I need to insert a 2nd disc.

HUH ? So I did that, finalized the discs.

My 1st dvd disc now shows:

Properties of all Photos: 2.16 Gb

Properties of the Disc:
Used space: 4,706,041,856 (4.38Gb)
Free space: 0 bytes (0 bytes)

WHY is that? Clearly shows 2.16 Gigs of files only. A DVD disc is at least 4 gigs.

Can anyone help please?

I was looking for other free softwares, like CDburnerXP, installed it and it DOES NOT see my DVD burner drive !! Aggggg

3. In the Burn a Disc dialog box, type a name for this disc in the Disc title box, click Like a USB flash drive, and then click Next.

I know what you are saying, but I'm trying to teach my Mom, so following Microsoft's guide, step by step.

Thanks. BUt i guess there is no guarantees it will "see" my HP DVD burner drive right? Until I install it and find out (like the CDburnerXP).

I hate installing so much stuff on a new laptop, only to find out it doesn't work, then have to uninstall (but things like registry, will never be the same again)
