I know name change require birth certificate.
What else birth certificate is used for? It doesn't seem like have lots of usefulness?

If you don't have your health card, you can use it, in tandem with another piece of ID, to prove citizenship and thus receive health care as per your right as a Canadian citizen.

You need it to get health insurance, passport, SIN, etc.

If you have Canadian birth certificate, you won't have a citizenship card.
If you lose your health card and/or SIN card, you need your BC.
For passport, if you cannot do renewal of your passport (such as the first passport you get after you are adult), you need your BC.
Other than these, you probably don't need to use your BC.

You'll need it when your passport expires.
I've needed mine countless times. Certain professional regulatory bodies require it (ie. medical), you need it for most professional exams, and other things like security clearance. It's your most important document... passports expire and healthcards often aren't accepted as ID, ultimately your birth certificate is the one document that proves that you're Canadian.

+1 It might not be an important something you use in your everyday on-goings, but it will be when the important things you do use go missing or are destroyed.
Your BC, you will find, is one of those "you don't know what you're missing until it's gone" things.

Can't you just call some government jerk and get another if you lose it?

It helps (http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2009-07-27-obama-hawaii_N.htm) (or hinders (http://www.birthers.org/)) your ability to become a US President.

You need it to prove you were born because your existence alone doesn't cut it.

It brings up another interesting question:
What if all your ID's are destroy in a fire. eg. Birth certificate, marriage certificate, name of change certificate, SIN, Health card, credit card, passport, certificate of canadian citizenship etc.. All id are burned.
All you remember is your SIN number.
now, how can you get back the IDs?
It seems to get the replacment, you need the some kind of proof of other ID? Catch 22?:|

...good question. I assume a copy of your photo ID is somewhere in the system (MTO, etc) and so you could start from there. Aside from that, I suppose you could get a professional (a lawyer? a doctor?) who can vouch for your identity. Maybe a notarized letter/note saying that the professional can and will vouch for you.
