Hi guys,

Anyone knows the proper way to handle a passed away guinea pig? I live in an apartment so there is no private soil for me to bury the little piggy. I live in Toronto and I am not sure about the bylaw in handling small animals' remains.

Please advise

Hate to say this but double bag and dispose of in the garbage chute.

Dogs and cats, the city used to pick them up, not so sure now......

Admittedly I don't know anything about guinea pigs..but it if were my pet I couldn't put down a garbage shute :(
I would contact a vet and get a price on cremation..I wouldn't leave the pet at the vets for disposal..there are reports of euthanized pets being sold to pet food companies for recyling. With my dogs I paid a little extra and brought them home in an little urn.
Failing that, I would ask a family member who does have a yard if I could bury piggy in their yard and offer to cover the grave with a rose or shrub for remembrance.
I'm sure there are other ways...but it would require a nice drive north to a park setting :)
Sorry about your loss ..I hope he/she lived a good long life.

toss the rodent in the green bin. I always toss dead duck and goose carcasses in there and they get collected no problem.

Go to a park at night and start digging. No one will find out.

It's illegal to bury animal carcasses in the City of Toronto.

Reason being, the wildlife will dig them up and it's unsanitary. ie Health Dept.

I wasn't being heartless in any way, if you double bag it and don't want to put in the chute, then freeze it and transport it to somewhere where it's legal to bury it.

Being in an apartment and not knowing what to do, I would double bag and toss it. What can you do with such a small dead animal....have a little 'ceremony' in your apartment and then remove it.

When our beloved dog passed away, we had him cremated but doubt that's an option with a guinea pig. Call your vet to find out.....but be careful of scams.

my friend, who lives in ottawa, had the same problem as you when her piggy died. apparently some of the vets have cremation services (even for piggies!) if you ask around. i think it might be expensive though... in the ballpark of several hundred for the cremation itself....

Im sorry for your loss >:(

If the Guinea Pig had a nautical nature or enjoyed marine activities you could try a burial at sea:

Go to a park like Morningside or the bluffs late at night, dig a hole and bury him. Use a small garden shovel to avoid too much attention. I wouldn't worry about animals digging him up, they'll be more interested in the garbage bins.

Should be no problem. I have used the following people for the cremation of birds.

In talking to them, they have handled everything from pocket pets to large dogs.

There are also a couple other pet cremation services that I'm aware of:

If you're going to dig a hole, dig a deep one because wildlife will get to it.

Anyone who did a cremation, what's the price of those?

I understand the burying idea, returning the pet to the earth, but cremation doesn't sound eco-friendly at all. It uses a lot of energy and what's the value of ash to the environment?

its not about how eco friendly, but about how much you care/respect it. I could say the same about graveyards taking up areas that could be used to plant more trees. And plus, cremation for a guinea pig wouldnt take a massive amount of energy compared to a human being.

No it is not illegal. It is permitted under the Ontario Disposal Act of 1990; however, you have to meet the conditions. Other than transportation restrictions (not relevant if keeping on your property) the key is that it must be buried at least 2 feet deep. Our cat was easily 2-3 feet in the ground.

I'm sorry for you loss.

Well, it let me recalled when my old dog passed away, it's a Chihuahua, my grandpa put it into a huge flowerpot, and put a jasmine flower on it.

My grandpa still keep that flower until now.
