I already posted this here a while ago..but I think it bears repeating in this pet section.

From an article in DogFancy magazine about the dangers of these machines to your pets..

From June Dog Fancy magazine, an article about a a 3 year old Rhodesian Ridgeback mix that got his tongue stuck in a paper shredder. "The owner was reading and heard the document shredder nearby begin to whirl. Then, there was a piercing cry, unlike any she had ever heard...She raced to the machine and yanked the power cord out of the wall. But it was too late. Caine's thick, pink tongue hung three inches below the blades. Panicked and in agony, the 75 pound dog bit through his tongue to free himself". The article goes on to say "In recent years at least five dogs damaged or lost their tongues entirely in machines..."

And then this was posted to the thread...

Hey Everyone,

My dog, Caine, was the one who lost his tongue and was in Dog Fancy (June issue, pg 8). I am happy to say that he is doing great, and has learned to eat and drink again. Just today, he was playing outside in his wading pool.

He has a blog: www.cainescause.blogspot.com
and Facebook Caine's Cause
and has been in many articles in the Chicago area including the Chicago Tribune and Sun Times. Also, the SouthTown Star in Tinley Park.

Thanks. Mental note to keep it unplugged when I'm not using it from now on.

That's just horrible and makes me quiver just thinking about it. If I was the owner of that dog, I would have written to the manufacturer of the shredder suggesting that they introduce a child/dog proof lock or safety shield feature to these machines. Anything with a cutting blade should have a built-in safety feature I think.

Imagine a hamster sneaking into one of those...
