8800GT idle at 80degrees?

Anyone know what might be the reason why this card gets so hot besides the hot weather outside? Was playing Starcraft2 and all the sudden the display goes black but the music on winamp still plays. And whats a good upgrade from the 8800GT? was thinking HD5850 or GTX 465.

My factory OC'ed 8800GT idled at 55ish degrees. 80 is insanely high for idle. Try updating your drivers, checking to see that your fan is actually working and try increasing the speed of your fan manually. If the fans working, try reseating the cooler.

Happened to me too, it started overheating and artifacting. I'm waiting for the 5770 to be $120ish.

Clean your fans, they could be clogged with dust. Most overheats are caused by one of two things: fan failures or clogged vents. If your vents look like there's just a little bit of dust stuck to the outside or the case (or whatever assembly you're using), disassemble the computer and take a closer look to be sure.

I've had one fan failure and two clogs in my experience with computers. Just be sure the air has a clean passage to pass through.
