View Full Version : Setting Clocks after Power Outage

I had a friend pose this question to me and even though it has never been a issue for me I thought I would throw it out to my fellow RFDers. If you do not own a watch and experienced a power outage where do you get the time so you can set your clocks. My friend has told me not all tv stations that display time like CP24 have the sametime even if they are in same area as another channel in same locale plus there are times I never noted this till my friend pointed out if you watch some news programs in the morning they will have the time in the corner but show traffic cameras of the various highways and routes the time is often more then a minute apart. Anyway with this being said what do you do?

+ 1 for JJJ. A cellphone, or an Ipod perhaps? How about a laptop? Or dial 0 on your land-line and ask the operator. LOL.

+1, and so does OP for not being able to answer that question.
So what if the time is a bit off on the TV? Is a difference of +/- 5 mins going to kill your friend?
Ask your friend this, how does anyone know for certain the correct time?

Kalel didn't get the unlimited comma + period package from RFD, hence his sparing use of them.

My clocks connect to the Atomic Clock and set themselves automatically. Never need to adjust them. They even change with DST.

I have a $10 clock that runs on batteries, which I also use as a backup alarm clock, so that if the power goes out in the middle of the night it'll still go off in the morning.

over time, the human race has become too lazy for our own good. We rely on electricity to tell us what time it is, to cook our food to watch TV and do all sorts of other things.
I think it's time, that you take a stance on this and fight the powers at be!
Time should be made available to all without the need of picking up the phone or turning on the TV to find out after a power outage. Why not just sue for power outtages, since it made you lose time?

you can connect to a internet time server
tock.utoronto.ca and sync your computer clock with U of T and then set your clocks based off their atomic clocks.

Gee whatever happenned to the good old days when a person could ask a legitate question and get useful answers. I do not mind a little ribbing but some replies are uncalled for and if things were reversed and did not have anything nice I would not reply. Now for some replies to some of the replies.
Someone suggested use the internet do you mean go to a certain website or the clock on your computer/laptop when you boot it up?
Some people do not have/own cellphones.
Calling the operator I have never heard of anyone doing that.
As for me having a difficult life I thought it would be interesting to see what kind of replies the question would get. As for +/- 5 minutes but if you are getting 2 different times which one would use and for that matter what if both those times are incorrect.
Connecting to the atomic clock I am not sure about others but would not even know how to do that.
I myself have battery back up but some of those only work for a limited time and if they do not how would you even know how accurate the time displayed when power came back on was perhaps a not a good battery in there.
As for watch suggestion again one assumes the watch is keeping good time itself.
Alot of my friends and family have not seen Passion of the Christ or are probably the kind of person who would watch that kind of movie let alone no anything re the story so they probably would not know the end.
Finally I know I am not the best writer/speller here so please no unkind comments its not like I claimed I am the best. If you are a 100% good speller and writer 100% of the time fine.

You've been provided legitimate solutions but apparently, no answer will be good enough to you. People can keep providing answers but you'll just say "what if the person is another Helen Keller?"
Is it a big deal anyways to have the real time down to the exact minute? In the end, your clock will still be different than every other clock.

How do you know that your clock is correct even before the power outage? So what question are you asking? About setting time after a power outage or about setting time 100% correctly?

Based on this thread here: http://bit.ly/beGDg0, I would suggest the solution is to train one's dog or cat to reset the clocks.

I suggest your friend get a clock with battery backup changed every 3 months in addition to a UPS connected to both an emergency diesel and hand crank generator.
That way, he's protected 99.999% of the time. If by some ridiculous incidence all four precautions fail, he'll be forced to make a treacherous journey to the legendary Mt. Computer to ask the master of fate and destiny, Lord Google of the Internet, what time is it? (http://tinyurl.com/abfz7f)

It might not be a legitate question to you but that does not mean its not legitate to others.
I never stated the answers were no good I just stated how some of solutions would not work. Also I did not say the exact minute I am just seeing to within some sort of reason to get accurate time. If your watch said something and you saw on tv or heard on a radio a different time that was more then a couple minutes off what it said on your watch would you change your watch to reflect what you saw or heard.
Again I reiterrate I was seeing if there was one answer that everyone or the bulk of people would agree with that would serve the bulk or other people. Sure some have said yes to this but if you look over the replies there is more then just one or 2 replies given and also was interested to see what people do when they experience what could perhaps be described as a similar experience.

You have misspelled "legitimate" three times in this thread. Do you really think it's "legitate"? I could look past it once but three times is just odd. Also how could your friends and family not know the ending of The Passion of the Christ? You're seriously saying that they would not know whats going to happen in that movie?

I just stated how some of solutions would not work. I have asked you what tools are available. You chose to ignore it. Then I can say that NO solution will work 100%, because if you don't have any way to access another clock, then you just cannot find an exact time.
If your watch said something and you saw on tv or heard on a radio a different time that was more then a couple minutes off what it said on your watch would you change your watch to reflect what you saw or heard.
Yes.

Here is the answer. There is no single way. Most people have watches, battery clocks, cell phones, PDA's, computers, all of which are independent of mains power. After a power outage you set the time using whatever source that is the easiest to find.

Ok so I spelled a word wrong 3 times. I did not claim I was the worlds best speller cause I doubt many people could every single time they post or write something they get all words spelt correctly. Also just because something is spelt wrong does not mean it should be taken seriously.
As for not knowing the ending of that movie some people do not watch religious movies plus not everyone in this world belong to the same religion thus not have a interest in it.
You may call my not given you details about my other tools as ignoring I call it as I do not think it is something I do not think is relevant or matters as I have stated the main reason I posted this is to see if everyone did the samething and if not which methods were used more often then not. As for changing watch when hearing or seeing a different time thats more then a few minutes all I can say wow I cannot imagine alot of people that do it. By saying that for those who have electric clocks with battery back up do you trust the time on them if they are not flash 12:00 as being accurate?

There are larger concerns to deal with before you work on improving your spelling.
That last post is pure gibberish.
To address your original question, my choice is a computer clock regularly synced to an NTP server.
I also believe that although you don't require 'to the second' clock accuracy, with such easy access to accurate references there is no excuse for clocks being wrong by more than a minute or two.

I try not to jump or criticize other's grammar or writing style, but this is correct. Kalel, you need to use punctuation. It took me several tries to try and decipher what you were saying. You have not used any sort of punctuation, except for the period, and you need to use more of those, as there are several sentences in a few big run on ones.

Again, correct. Just use anything. Is the Kalel's time management so bad that he needs to constantly know the exact time to the second (if there is such a thing). Time is relative. Just try and show up for appointments on time or early.
