View Full Version : Guy complained to me that my dog is not allowed to pee/poo near his house

I walk my dog along the street and he would pee/poo around grasses, bushes, flowers, trees, stop signs, electrical boxes, and etc. This guy who owns a corner unit has a stop sign and electrical/telephone boxes around his lawn. Twice has he complained to me that my dog is not allowed to pee around his house even though the poles and stuff are own by the city. He says he works for the city and this is not permitted. I ignored him the second time he tells me this. I pick after my dog every time and nothing gets left over. Is he telling the truth? he is the only Indian family in this Chinese neighborhood, and he is the only person who complains about my dog doing his business.

How do you know you're the only person he complains about?
How does he know you pick up your dog every time and nothing gets left over?
How does he know you're telling the truth?
He's got every right to ask you not to let your dog do its business on "his" property, and you've got every right to let your dog do its business wherever you want "as long as you pick up".
So what if it's permitted, are you going to keep letting your dog do its business on their property, and getting the owner all riled up just because it's legal?
Is he a jackass for telling dog owners not to let their dogs pee/poo on "his" property even though "you always pick up"? Maybe.
Are you a jackass for not respecting his requests and letting your dog pee/poo on "his" property, but "picking up after it"? Maybe.
My point is, there's no right or wrong here. He's got a point, and you've got a point. Solution? Let your dog do their thing somewhere else, and smile at the guy next time you pass his house.
Indian/no Indian is irrelevant.
BTW I own 2 dogs, and if someone asked me not to have my dogs do their business on their hydropole, I oblige and not let it ruin my evening.

if he was Chinese would it make a difference....lol
and how do you know he is not the only one just being straightforward and open by voicing out the concern of the entire block? lol
anyways, am black and am moving to your street, i guess that means more drama for u and your dog.....lol
I am the modern day Karate Kid :D
Anyways, since i am the olddog and feel for the dog, (not u), here a solution to your problem: first thing monday morning , go to walmart and buy a monkey suit and then drive downtown to cityhall. Let them know you have a serious situation and would like to file a complaint. Explain to them how your neighbpur is concerned about your dog and PLEASE stress that he is the only indian family in your chinese neighbourhood. (you will get 5000 airmiles points if u mention that).

Even if you do pick up its crap, dog piss turns grass brown. I wouldn't want a dog doing it on my lawn.

it's not well known but most local municipalities have bylaws that don't allow pets to deficate or urinate on private property. It's something pretty much ignored when it comes to urination but strictly speaking, if the guy were to complain to the city, they could investigate you and fine you (per whatever the fines of the bylaw would be).
Instead of ignoring/escalating the issue, why not just let your dog pee elsewhere? It's simple common decency.

I know that this to be true, but for some reason my dogs make my own backyard green. You can tell when looking down the lawn, there'll be spots and areas where the grass is extra green and thick, while the rest is dry looking.
I believe the it's more female dog's urine than male dog's that has more of the chemical (nitrogen?) that turns grass brown.

just don't walk by his property...or speed walk so your dog doesn't have a chance to sniff around, etc.
note: personally i'd probably ask for a copy of said by-law...if he was an arse about it from the beginning, i may even buy a few lbs of salt and strategically sprinkle it in the middel of night....:D

the immaturity of this board nevers ceases to amaze me. what happened to being a good neighbor? If he's asked you to stop letting your dog pee around his property, then let you dog pee somewhere else. Its not like my gf at a reststop, at the movies, or in the shower, dogs will pretty much pee anywhere.

why make things difficult? its a reasonable request from a property owner. and I hope you're joking about the salt because all he has to do is soak some bread in antifreeze and sprinkle that around your neighborhood.

As a gardener people like the OP tick me off. Frankly, it's disgusting to get down on my hands and knees to weed a flowerbed that has been drenched in dog piss. Even worse if it's a really humid day as the humidity just intensifies the scent. I sure as hell don't spend hrs planting and taking care of flowerbeds to have an inconsiderate dog owner use my gardens as their own personal pissing spot, thank you very much. Poles, cable boxes, etc. are no different when it comes to holding the scent BTW.

I know that this to be true, but for some reason my dogs make my own backyard green.
I believe the it's more female dog's urine than male dog's that has more of the chemical (nitrogen?) that turns grass brown.
A male dog will spread its urine across multiple areas to mark his territory. Urine contains nitrogen, small amounts of it is very good for the grass as it acts as a fertilizer.
A female dog, will unload most of her urine immediately, too much nitrogen will kill the grass, but over time it will grow back very healthy.
This is the same thing with fertilizer. If you dump too much fertilizer in one area, your grass will die.
Now back to the original situation. I would go to the by-law office and check where the city's property line ends. I was recently told it's the round water pipe and anything below that is legally the city's property. If the by-law states that the dog can urinate/poo on city property, as long as you pick it up then you're ok. But, I would present this to him in a kindly manner, letting him know what the law states.
I would then proceed to acknowledge his request for not having my dog pee or poo on his/gov't property. Just because i want to be a kind neighbour, but also presenting the facts to him that his understanding of "his property" is not his property.

Dogs will naturally *mark* where another one has...so mailboxes, light standards, hydrants..they're all targets.
If it were me I'd just be sure to walk my dogs out on the street around this guys corner. Doesn't matter if it's not his property, or the town boulevard, he still has to maintain it. I own dogs and I wouldn't want every dog within walking distance peeing on my front hedge.
Seems a reasonable request to me. This sort of confrontation can escalate..better to just do as he asks. Could be worse...he could be your neighbor.

Letting your dog pee in someone's garden is a ***** move, but poles? Come on. Sure if its on their property, they have a right to say no. But otherwise, people need to lighten up.

So in a neighborhood of all Chinese, you take your dog to crap and piss on the only Indian person's lawn...... and you wonder what his problem is?
Here's what you do, you take the dog for walks on the opposite side of the road or anywhere that is not his property and when you see this Indian guy outside, you go and apologize not because you are wrong and he is right, because it's called being a neighbor.
edit: by his lawn, I mean if it's in front of his house, he has to maintain it even if it's city property last I checked.

Taking the OP's story at face value (which I have trouble doing given the Chinese/Indian comment) I would agree that this neighbour needs to lighten up. That said, government property or not, the lawn is his responsibility and he has every right to ask pet owners not to have their pets do their business on his lawn.
Sometimes this forum lacks basic common sense. So one's dog can't use a certain lawn - their are plenty of other places to use.

I think "Other" Chinese are not complaining does not mean its allowed.
Same way he is the only Indian does not mean he is wrong. or right.
Why can't you accommodate the only Indian guy and take dog somewhere else? Ask other Chinese people if what he is saying correct or not.
I find it stupid to post here for some frivolous reasons.

Growing up my best friend lived on a corner lot. And everyone and their brother used it as toilet for their dogs so I understand where this guy is coming from. I'm sure your dog is not the only one using that spot and I don't blame him for being upset. My friend and I used to chase to people away when we were kids. How would you like it if ever dog stopped and made a deposit in front of your home?

I walk the dog around the neighborhood, and he pees on trees, poles, and etc. It is natural for a male dog to do so. When my dog squats down and do his thing, all I could do is pick it up. Mind you guys, I'm not deliberately bringing my dog into the middle of his lawn and let him do his business there to piss the guy off.
I have no issues with having other dogs doing their things near my place as long as the owners pick after the dog. Do people complain about wild geese shitting all over the street? birds dropping crap over their house? kids playing on the street and the ball rolled over their lawn and the kids had to pick it up?
I could see people complain if someone's dog ran into their lawn and dug a hole, destroyed the flowers, left craps all over and owners did not pick them up, attacked the kids, and etc. But a dog doing his things with the owner picking after it? I guess some humans are even less than a dog. I wouldn't be surprise about people like these complaining about the geese if they could, or the birds. If they are really this anal about it, I'd suggest people like these build up walls all around their house.
Thanks for all the responses, and here is what I am going to do going forward.
I will continue to take the same path and walk my dog every day. I'd avoid having my dog pee anywhere near his place but I will walk my dog around that area every day just to give him the sense of insecurity that my dog MAY pee on his lawn. He can install CCTV to find out if my dog pees near his place for all I care. He can also build a fence all around his house for all I care. If he doesn't like it, try complaining to the city (better have some solid proof), or move out
and for those who disagree, read this:

or perhaps I should be worried about this?

So instead of trying to respect your neighbour, you're going to further inflame relations by using dog piss as a threat?
Don't piss me off, man. I don't appreciate being talked to. None of my Chinese neighbours talk to me, but since you're Indian, you have a problem with me. So I'm going to walk my dog slower when I pass your house, so the probability of my dog urinating is higher. All your grass is belong to us.

At least you pick up after your dog. Twice in the last few weeks, I've had dog owners leave their dog's gifts on my property. One of them did it on my front walkway, even -- about 50 ft away from the curb. The jerk runs his dog around without a leash and doesn't care where it goes. Obviously, he doesn't care where it *goes*, either. I put the dog's 'gift' in a paper bag and left it on his porch, BTW.
The second time was more recent. Not sure who did it this time, but if it happens again then I'm definitely installing a camera.

I've always picked after my dog. If I ran out of bags while walking him when he did his thing, I will return home, get the bags and pick up the left over.
I just walked my dog and I took the same path, guy was there staring at my dog waiting for the possibility that my dog may lift his leg so that he could complain. His expression was priceless. I walk my dog 3-4 times a day using the same path, I can imagine his insecurity should he be bothered by something so petty.
Also, for those who called me racist because I mentioned that he was the only Indian family in a Chinese neighborhood, you need to get your sensitivity issue looked at. He is in FACT the only Indian family in the neighborhood. Stating the FACT does not automatically render a person racist. There is also ONE white family, and ONE black family along the street. Being a solitary race in a homogeneous neighborhood does not give you the rights to be an @ss and think you could get away with a racism defense. Should he had asked me and explained his concerns politely, I'd have happy to oblige his request, but that still doesn't mean I have to give up my rights to walk my dog on the same path.

What made people label the comment racist wasn't that you were stating fact, but that there was no purpose in doing so. The sky is also blue, but you didn't state that in your message - the reason being it is not relevant to the discussion. You decided the man's race was somehow relevant and were implying that it had some role in the discussion. Do you really not get that?

His property ends where the round water pipe petrudes from the ground. That is where the city property begins, all the way down the driveway. If there is no round water pipe on your property, look next door, there might be one there.

Ok, well most dog owners have to walk their dogs for them to actually take a dump, it's good that you have trained yours so well.
Hopefully your not like many owners that let their dogs poop in the backyard and never pick it up. I've seen and heard of too many backyard (cottage neighbor) dog poop stories. One of my neighbors never picked up his dogs poop. When I would look out from my bedroom window, it was disgusting and looked like a yard with land mines.

I hate finding dog sh it on my lawn, inconsiderate people who don't give a damn because their dog has rights! BS.
I am also a dog owner, have two of them and always pick up after them IF they go anywhere other than our backyard. Usually it's all on my property and I do pick it up....

I would prefer that if your dog took a crap anywhere on my property, that it do so below the sidewalk or at least on the grass above the sidewalk. A lot easier to pick up and I have no problems with it as long as you pick up after him/her.

when I take my dogs out for a walk its for just that..a walk...it's not a washroom expedition ..I hate carrying crap around especially if one of them goes at the begining of our walk. to avoid this I ensure they do their business in the field behind our house prior to leaving. I'd rather clean up sh it in the privacy of my own yard than out on the side of the road. don't get me wrong...I always go prepared incase and always clean up after my pets...and if they need to pee I always try and steer them off peoples front yards as to avoid the obvious urine stain that will happen when all the other neighbourhood dogs try and pee over top of that spot!
BUT with that said...some people don't have the luxury of having a yard

I'm curious, how many of you guys will be offended if my dog took a dump infront of your house but on the side walk? You won't find any traces of my dog doing his deeds just that you might see him do it there. I didn't realize how offensive it might be till somebody on rfd in another thread ranted about it.
But what if, for want of a better phrase, it's a really "gooey" one? I mean it's all well and good to bring a bag and be prepared to pick it up, but what if the dog doesn't co-operate and it ends up being one of those that gets smeared all over? If that happens on the grass (unless the houseowner has kids who play there), it's not a big deal, but on the sidewalk if there are any remains, everyone has to walk past it. I've never seen someone come back later with a bucket and scrubber, or pressure washer. ;)

haha good point but I gotta thank my dog that I've been able to pick it up most of the time. Bad thing...he don't like going on grass as he likes cement or gravel :(

We definitely need a smarter way to allow "Thanks" on this forum.
