Where can I find minidiscs for less than 5/each? Futureshop and BB both sell the 5 packs at $25 and I've always thought that was a bit pricey. Any ideas?

Sony doesn't make Mini Discs... just Mini Disc technology. They put their brand on other people's media :cheesygri

Yea I could use some cheep minidiscs too. I picked up 10 when futureshop had the pricing mistake on the JVC ones, 5 for $5. And then I had to buy a minidisc player.
And now I'm not willing to pay much more than that for blank minidiscs.

Good to know. So do they consistantly put their name on any particular media, or is it much like people put their names on CD-R? Is there any maker of minidiscs that is acknowledged as the best? Thanks

They would appear to sell media a lot cheaper than any of the big names. They're based in Montreal but I don't know anything about them beyond that. They also have the new Hi-MD players a lot cheaper than lister at sonystyle.ca
Thinking about getting one of the Hi-MD players. I like my sports MZ-S1 though because I use it skiing and its deals just fine with the evaportation/condensation inside my jacket.
Anyone know anything about the new players?

I'm sure it's a consistant supplier. Sony doesn't like to change once they have a system in place... although the system might allow for multiple suppliers like with their CD-Rs and DVDRs... but more likely it is just one source.
I don't think there is a huge difference in MiniDisc quality from source to source.... it's kinda like floppy disks, there aren't really a whole lot of people making them! ;)

Actually, I've heard that Sony doesn't even make the inner components of their TV's any more. Apparently they're made by Hitachi or Samsung ( not sure what manufacturer), but they use their own plastics, put their badge on it, and mark it up.

You think that's bad? I've heard they don't even make the PS2 :0 Supposedly it's outsourced to manufacturing facility that one a bid, and is locked into only manufacturing it for Sony... this could possibly explain some of the unofficial PS2's floating around Asia too

Dunno about their CRTs, but Samsung and Sony have a joint venture for LCD TVs.

any word on where blank Hi-MD's can be had for cheap?
http://www.minidisc-canada.com/shopdisplayproducts.asp?id=50&cat=Blank+Hi%2DMD
$9 + shipping charges
futureshop.ca has these for $11, so does sonystyle.ca. Does the $20 off $50 at sonystyle apply to these? If so, I could order 5 and get them for ~$7 each but then there's the shipping again.

Golden does sell Sony Hi-MD disks but for the same price as the Sony Store. I haven't seen any place else in the GTA that sells those things cheaper than Sony's list price. ($10.99) Even minidisc-canada.com sells them for $8.99 but with the shipping costs added in, you'll need to buy at least 10 to make it really worth your while.
Well, at least we can get them. According to the minidisc.org forums, there are a lot of U.S. users who can't get any HIMD disks locally.

Well, I bought some at that price a week ago.
I don't think that's a sale price, either. They do have more expensive minidiscs but to be totally honest, I have yet to have a problem with them.
My experience with the Minidisc format over the last 6 years has been that the physical format itself is rather robust and I have found that the build quality overall of the media to be rather decent. Even the "cheap" minidiscs seem to be rather well put together.
Since the disk isn't constantly spinning, (and with the latest HI-MD recorders, it spins even less frequently unless you're recording straight PCM) actual wear and tear on the media in rather minimal.
Seems to me (and please point me to somewhere that will correct me if I'm wrong) that the more expensive disks are more "prettier" rather than "sturdier".

Well, if you're thinking about getting the cheap Hi-MD player look to compusmart. This is only $100 vs. $160 at the minidisc-canada.com
