View Full Version : The Official RFD Position on Avatars

Ryan
Jul 27th, 2004, 02:01 PM
While we support free speech at RFD, recently users have been choosing avatars that could potentially offend other readers and generally degrade the RFD experience.

This is why we have decided to outline features of an avatar that we would like you to avoid. These aren't hard and fast rules and it will ultimately be at the discretion of the RFD staff to decide if an avatar has crossed the line.

Questionable avatar content: close ups of breasts, crotches, or bums (eg thongs), suggestions of sexual acts.

A good rule to follow is "Would you want your boss/parents/children to see you looking at that?"

At no time will we allow avatars to display profanity or racist imagery.

Personally I like the idea of avatars. It gives the ability to personalize your idenity in a public community along with a signature. Also helps me to easily identify other RFDers and helps me to quickly locate my own posts while scrolling through threads instead of reading each name. :D

As Ryan said, you can disable them in your user settings if you want.

That doesn't look that big.

In terms of filesize it's smaller then yours, just a bit taller.

my question is, how come some of the avatars get all blurry and messed up after a while? I had a picture up, and then a few months later, it got all messed up like it went through static electricity or something lol.

That happened after the tech guy moved RFD/upgraded the forums, I believe.

A few months ago all avatars were corrupted, and had to be replaced.

This is disturbing 18+ material. It's something my mother would look at and say "What kind of sick person would want to show an animation of a deadly looking person repeated ripping his own heart out?"

I'm not sure if this is from a cartoon show but wouldn't it be rated 18+ watchers that laugh about stupidity and sickening stuff so easily demonstrated by cartoons?

What's RFD's position on Avatars depicting drugs and weapons?

In the past I've seen avatars with drugs (but I haven't seen any recently), but I'm still seeing many avatars depicting guns and other weapons.

I think RFD should consider banning animated GIFs altogether. They are annoying, distracting, and never entertaining.

It's unpleasant to read a page and always have something moving off to the side... I tend to leave sites quicker when I find them infested with these little "gems".

My avatar was recently removed by a moderator and contained none of this criteria. I was participating in a thread about someone taking offence to a raptor jesus and changed mine...then it got changed again.

I find it interesting these avatar things most of the boards I visit have restrications but find on some I can meet the length and with but not size of the file or the other way around. I applaud restrictions but its frustrating. Now if we could try to do something about size of sig line or size of any photos/attachments. I think its great some people want to show pics of things like prizes won but sometimes the pics are just to big. Perhaps people could either use thumbnail pics or have a link to where people can see them if they choose. I use dial up and it can sometimes mess things up.
