Finally, the perfect ultraportable for me!! I've been looking and looking for the perfect ultraportable. The ibm x series lacked an optical drive and s-video, and also quite pricey. The dell 300m and lcd issues and no optical drive or s-video. The asus s5n had no s-video or optical drive but looks sweet.
This dell 700m priced right at 1700 is awesome! It has the s-video for watching the divx movies on the bigscreen, optical drive, widescreen and around 4lbs...what a smoking laptop.
I will wait around till I'm desparate..hopefully by then price drops a bit..as for now my acer 290 will have to do...

Strange, the 700m starts at 4.1 lbs and looks kind of thick (38.1 mm, side view)...and yet, it's an ultra-portable...?!
Nice looking lappy though.

sure y not? I know definitions of ultraportable vary...but I think that ~4lbs and under 1.5" thick would be classified as an ultraportable..
I'd say 3-4.5 ultraportable
4.5-6.5 standard portable
> 6.5 desktop replacement
now if IBM comes out with something with an internal optical drive and s-video..I'd be all over it...

My T41p is 26.6mm thick and 5.06lbs (2.3Kg). If you're really concern about weight, you can get the 6-cell battery (9-cell is the default).
To me (and to many others, I believe), ultra-portables are less than 1 inch thick and under 1.5Kg...

Yeah, my friend has a t41..and I was suprised at how light it was. I know IBM thinkpads are geared toward business users and they have that look to them. I wish they would come out with a laptop with the "wow" factor for looks.
Oh and I know its up to debate and really it doesn't really matter but I figured I would punch in "laptop ultraportable" and google I'm feeling lucky...try it..and see the definition of ultraportable...so I'm sure the "many others" can be both ways...

LoL...OMG, that Lifebook P5020 (1.6inch and 3.85lbs) is an ultraportable? You got me there. (about.com).
My sister was saying the same thing that "they all look the same" about IBM's TPs. I guess they're are kind of boring, and like you said, there isn't that killer wow factor to them when it comes to looks. Your (will be) 700m certainly looks good!

The 700m looks pretty slick.. widescreen too!
Still, I'm a little iffy on Dell laptops. After my old 300m's LCD problems, I'm hesitant to buy another laptop from Dell.
If you're planning to buy a 700m, it might be wise to wait a few months first. After that, any potential problems and design flaws should've been posted on the Dell forums by the first batch of 700m owners.

Now you're scaring him...
But I agree, wait for a short time first, then they (dell) can fix whatever issue the 700m has (BIOS, software...etc). On the bright side, every laptop has their own issues when first release to the market, not just Dell. The differences are how many issues and the severity of them.

You are definitely right on that. I will be waiting for a few months until I read up on user reviews. I would think tho if I had to bet...Dell must have fixed the lcd problem. I think (just guessing here) that they fixed it on the 300m supposedly with the newer lcds that were supposed to be more shinier or something. If I am buying any dell or any laptop for that matter I would definitely get the 3yr warranty. But man I want this thing NOW! I heard widescreen is great for photoshop and such. I haven't really used a widescreen but can definitely see the benefits. Unlike the ibm...this laptop has the "wow" factor for looks...I'm sure this would get quite a few looks.

I didn't know Dell had finally implemented a fix to the LCD problem.. where did you hear that from?
Well to be fair to Dell, the 300m was supposed to be originally designed by Samsung. Dell supposedly bought them from Samsung and rebranded them as Dell laptops (at least that's what I heard on the Dell forums).

I did not hear it officially thats why I said "think"..but on the forums there were a couple of posts where some people who kept on returning their lcds got it replaced and some noted that the newest ones were shinier. And after that there were no more posts so my guess was that the new lcds that were being the replacements were more reinforced..but like I said..it is totally unofficial and it is my guess since people stopped complaining after the shinier ones.

Haha damn I don't have a smiley face developing yet (it's been about 2 months since I replaced the LCD).
Time to start stacking some textbooks on the 300m and make the smiley face come back... then I can get a new "shiny" LCD!

 I totally agree...I would not even hesitate to do so...I was very close to buying a dell 300m but that damn happy face prevented me to do so...even tho I figured the new lcd would alleviate the problem...
hey if you do decide to do so..and I seriously would...well at least before your warranty expires...you should take a before pic of the lcd..just to see if there really is a diff....and if you post it..I am sure you can help out alot of potential buyers so they know there is a new lcd that is stronger...

Personal opinion over 4lbs is thin and light, not unltraportable, but hey does it really matter

I'm not a fan of dell at all, and this one seems a little bigger than a typical 'ultra-light' notebok, but the main point for me will be the battery tests. If this thing only gets 2-3 hours, then it really won't be worth it.
I wonder if you could swap the optical drive for an extra battery if you needed a lot more power?

The battery life is reported to be pretty poor.
But I'm still interested in this lappy.
The other one that sounds promising is the new Avertec 3500. It should be around the same price but you get tablet PC functionality with its convertible screen. I know, not comparable, but interesting nonetheless.

integrated video...dang
i was hoping that this would give the sony s170 (customizable centrino, 4 pounds with 13.3 xbrite and 64 meg radeon 9700) a run for its money

it will be intereting if the avertec sink or swims i doubt it will have more then 2.5hrs of battery life, and who wants to be tied down with a tablet, and its a little on the heavy side, but it is cheap.

I really like the idea of a tablet, I intend to use the laptop as a internet terminal, and it'd be nice sitting in my couch, and using the laptop as a tablet to read news/surf forums etc.
I think a lot of people would find a tablet nice to use, it's just that they haven't been worth it. And it's not that heavy unless you plan to walk around with it using it as a portable note taker.

It's not really poor as much as the battery being small, only 32Whr.

Yes the optional battery that is stronger but a bit heavier goes for about 5hrs according to tests...which I think is sufficient.

Dell will FIX WHATEVER ISSUE?!?! HAHAHAHA
You have not had a Dell obviously. I bought my Dell SmartStep 200N 2 years ago in September and i've had problems after 8 months because of overheating issues. The computer shutsdown even if u're watching DVD's!!And yes, it IS A DESIGN FLAW and Dell won't do JACK **** about it. This Dell laptop is a piece of ****. I will never buy a Dell again. I know 3 other people I have met in the school library with the same laptop and they have the SAME PROBLEMS. Go check out the Forums for smartstep. They wno't do jack. Every thread is someone having a problem. A group of people even FORMED A LAWSUIT and they got shut down by those bitches at Dell. And not only that, but the stupid ****s on tech support don't know ****. Same ****ing run around about diagnostic CD and opening ur laptop. Good thing i paid $300 for the complete care garbage, but they won't even replace it. This is going to be my 2nd time and it pisses me off because i don't have a computer at school and I have to come back in 2 weeks after they send it back. And you know what, it doesn't fix the problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You hook up ur laptop to external speakers or get a Y-adapter to go from the earphone jack on ur laptop to the audio-in on ur tv.
