Burger Bar in Kensington Market

I'm posting this here because I think it's more of a Shopping Discussion than Food.

I just came back from this place, first visit on a Team Buy coupon. Burger is ~$10, and the sides are $4. Overall, the food was pretty good. The menu said "naturally raised Ontario beef", and it does have more flavour than the average burger. The wait staff was generally friendly. It's got a "socialist" neighbourhood small business feel :) . They only offer tomato slices if they believe it's ripe enough, which we were "fortunate" enough to receive. They serve "micro brew" soda, which was ~$4 per serving.

I like to get people's feedback on a small problem that happened when we tried to use the Team Buy coupon. When we purchased the coupon, it says only 1 per person per visit. Later, they sent an updated email saying that it cannot be gifted on the spot, but the name has to properly reflect the user. Apparently, that posed some "logistical" problems. I don't see how complicated it could be, but I had Team Buy change the name on the voucher to my wife's name, who was there with me.

So when we gave them the vouchers and ordered the food, the waitress came back to say there was a rule change - only 1 voucher may be used per table, not per person as the voucher indicated. They said that update was sent out regarding this. (I said that if they really wanted, I'll move to another table, and won't talk to my wife during the meal.) Full disclosure, they did allow us to use 2 vouchers for both of us for this visit after a little discussion, and asked that we only use 1 per table in the future.

I went home and searched through my mailbox. I could only find the update about gifting rule on this voucher, that they requested the clients to make sure the name on the voucher to the person actually using it. Whether there was another update on the rules of redemption, I don't think it should have been allowed, especially after the payment for the Team Buy voucher has been made. The idea of Team Buy and other daily deal sites is for customers to make up their mind quickly and only have 1 day to buy the product. If the rule was 1 per visit per table, I would probably not have bought it. (I seldom go to a local restaurant by myself.) If the rules on how to redeem the voucher changes, the effectively the product has changed, and that is not really unfair for the buyer who did not really receive what they paid for.

I've sent an email to Team Buy to refund the other 2 vouchers and have yet to hear from them... But this does give me pause to make future purchases...

Makes you wonder why would a business participate and then re-neg on their own offer! I've seen other threads on here questioning if issues like this would occur if a lot of people decide to get in on an offer. Looks like it does.

This issue has been raised before for other places. After setting the deal the business decides that they might be losing a lot of revenue and tries to weasel their way out. If the coupon said something like "subject to conditions" then you can't really argue much.

Raise the problem to Teambuy and at least they wouldn't deal with them in the future.

I sent them an email already. No reply yet. I'm actually going to ask for a refund for the other 2 vouchers I bought, since what I paid for isn't really what is being delivered.

EDIT - Here is the "original" conditions. The last condition says "Cannot be combined on one bill". I suppose that it can be interpreted as cannot use 2 coupons for 1 bill, but then my wife and I could get separate bills. They should have said 1 per table instead, then it's clear what we did buy.

Includes a $16 credit towards food and drinks
Alcohol is not included, one per person per visit
Not valid with any other promotion. No cash back
Dine in only. Taxes included, gratuities are not
Cannot be combined on one bill

Anyways, we may just visit separately in the future if Team Buy does not refund my purchase...

sorry to hear that... I went pretty early right after the deal so I guess they were sorting it out then already. I know when I went, I got dinged about the name on the voucher so I had to pay extra even tho I gifted one to my gf but it showed my name twice. I like the food and all, but sucked that these "deals" have been... hit or miss. And some places seem to... give you less food because you're using a voucher. Like at a thai restaurant that I've been to before, substantially less food than before. :(

Id take that to be one per party, pretty obviously. Really, the restaurants get next to nothing out of this after the group place (groupon says they get 50% of the buy), they know people won't come alone and will spend more. The norm is for 2 people to have one bill, customer being shady to ask for another bill to ge around "not combined"
If you aren't willing to take small losses, then you will take big losses. This is my guarantee. -

I think "shady" is a bit strong. As a customer, I will do what the T&Cs say. If the business loses money on promoting themselves on Team Buy, then don't use this strategy or that steep a discount.

Anyways, I started the thread thinking that they changed the rule after the fact, because they said they sent an update. If they had pointed out that line to us at the restaurant, we would have accepted it as our mistake and only used one voucher.
