How to build/run a discussion forum?

Not sure if this belongs here or perhaps entrepreneurial...Have no expectation of profit so I put it here...

This may seem like a simple question, but what is the process to set up a web forum such as RFD? Obviously, a forum starting out will be, and likely always will be, on a much smaller scale and, I'm guessing, need far fewer resources.

I am new to this and all I bring is an idea for the forum - I get a domain name, I've looked a bit at the different software packages (UBB and the like)...but how do I bring it all together?

In case anyone is curious, I have no expectation of bringing this together over night. I am obviously coming into this with no experience.

You need a domain and a webhosting plan.

Choose the bb software you want to use (SMF, vbulletin....)

Follow the install instructions for the bb software (might have to create a database or dbuser in the webhosting control panel).

Should be up and running.
