View Full Version : Group Buy Herman Miller Embody Chair
handaman

EDIT : Due to marginal discounting from the suppliers, this group buy is not active!
First of all I would like to thank amph1bius for starting a thread (http://forums.redflagdeals.com/herman-miller-embody-chair-956397/)on a Herman Miller Embody Promotion .
Best Price I have quoted for 20+ Embody "fully loaded" Black on black chairs is $850+HST Total of $960.75, this is delivered to Toronto Yorkville Area (Nirvana Home Furnishings)
Best price from BI in Mississauga is $875.50 + HST for a Total of $988.75 .
Price is based on the following :
1. One order is placed with us for all the chairs, and one invoice will be issued by Business Interiors (Ontario) Inc.
2. The chairs are to be paid for in total prior to us placing the order with Herman Miller.
3. Chairs will be shipped to Business Interiors (Ontario) Inc only in Mississauga. (Different tax rules apply for other provinces).
4. Within 50 km of Business Interiors, (i.e. GTA), individual delivery charges of $65.00 plus HST will apply if delivery is requested.
5. Chairs may be picked up at Business Interiors location in Mississauga in order to save the delivery charges.
6. Chairs will be ready for shipping as per Herman Miller's acknowledgement date.
At the moment, Business Interiors will only give us a discount price if we pool in and make the purchase together with one delivery location in the GTA. In order to do this we need to setup some rules for those interested in getting in on this deal. Please provide some rules that you think we need to have in place, here is a starting point:
1. We need to find a senior RFD member that we can all trust and is willing to give us his or her personal information to collect the funds and make the purchase on our behalf.
2. We need to find a mutually beneficial delivery location for all the chairs
3. We need to have confirm and have our money in by a specific date.
4.
Here is a list of interested RFD members :

2. Ambphibious

still not sure how the payment is going to work... One way is for each person to write a cheque to the purchaser, then go with the purchaser to deposit the cheques and also pay with credit card at same time.

@Shar, I am waiting for a quote from Gabriel Ross.
Design Within Reach has quoted me $1170 + Taxes delivered to Toronto.
here is the content of their email to me
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Here is a quote I have worked out so far. Each Chair with the C7 Castors would be around $1300. I was able to give you a 10% discount because of the bulk order which ends up being $1170. If we proceed with this order I can submit for a ship quote to lessen Shipping and Handeling. I look forward to speaking with you soon.

The sheep effect on RFD is strong. That's why I'm really against people making facetious posts esp in the Motor Vehicle forum where n00bs will actually think everything they read on there is true.
I think this is a great opportunity for someone to come steal:
- $988 x 20 something chairs...
- payment info (bank account or cc number) and personal information (name and address for delivery)

It's pretty much the same thing.
- has to be one order
- delivered to the store
- HM Embody with Black on Black rhythym fabric
The hardest part of this group buy is getting everyones money together and making 1 order.

Why wouldn't it be possible for the store/distributor to do multiple orders?
All they have to do is to provide a contact #. People can call in, state their intent that they are part of this group buy and provide a credit card.
If we hit the minimum quantity of orders, then the store/distributor can execute transactions for all provided credit cards.

What about trying this place? It's in Alberta, so that means only 5% GST. If they would match the $850 price, that would put the total at < $900, perhaps even with shipping.

Or even 1 order with multiple credit cards? IE, 1 order is made, then people have 48hrs to call in their CC info or the deal is off. If 20+ call in, then it goes through. This is a bit more hassle for the retailer, but it should be no more risk. After all, it's not like it's a situation where it's a friend or relative giving this price as a favor, rather because they are getting enough business to justify it.

It's a great idea and I will talk to Nirvana and see if this can work for them. I know Business Interiors said no, it would take them 3 hours to do this processing and the management would not like this.

I called this place, and apparently Herman Miller does not like their retailers to sell outside of their area. So perhaps ordering from Alberta is not such a good idea... Strange though, because I ordered an Aeron from Gabrielle Ross (BC) to Ontario last year without issue. Oh well.

...Embody "fully loaded" Black on black chairs...
Exactly what does fully loaded mean anyways?
1) With Arms?
2) Polished Aluminum base finish?
3) Graphite frame finish (assumed not to be white - which is more $)?
4) Rubberized Castors?
5) Category 6 (Balance) Black?
To me, with these options minus the white from your description would describe a 'fully loaded' Embody chair........would this be the chair in question?

Maybe we should approach Contemporary out of Alberta or Gabriel Ross since they include free shipping anyways. For the Ontario folks, the 8% savings in tax by ordering from Alberta/BC would offset the shipping cost.
I honestly don't see why they can't accept separate payments for this or ship to different addresses. Its not like we're dealing with a $100 item here.

The retailer has to play ball here, if they want to sell 20 chairs then they are going to have to take payments from more than one source. They will have to want to sell us all this stuff individually instead of taking one easy payment from a corporate client which is an arm twist from their perspective. As a retailer, I might be more interested in putting up with this pain in the butt if it got me a bonus at the end of the month or at fiscal year end ... might be another angle to try if this falls through.

I contacted a retailed in Alberta (see above post) and he informed me that HM is territorial about where their retailers sell to. And, though Gabrielle Ross, at leas, seems immune to this, as they ship all over Canada, as BC now has HST, we're not saving txs by going with them. However, if they will match the Nirvana price, including their advertised free shipping, they might be less hassle if they accept multiple orders/payments/shipping addresses.

Fabric should be upgraded to Balance - the Rhythm fabric is thin and makes the seat hard and uncomfortable... not justified on a $1000 chair

Rhythm is very thin and coarse.
Balance seems more breathable and thicker (which I find contributes to more padding).

Ok great,
Few more things you can bring up.
One is to ask if the white glove shipping is necessary. From my understanding white glove shipping means they come to your house, go inside, unpack it, assemble it and ensure its working. We may save a few bucks (sometimes upto $150) by removing that.
An option for customers (like me) who want to upgrade the fabric.
But ya, if we can't do seperate transactions I really don't see how this can go smoothly.
Also maybe a price point for 5 and 10 people
I spoke to someone from BI when I stopped by there and he said the price starts to drop when we get at least 5. For example the Aeron chair is $50 off when we get 5 people.

For a purchase of 20 Embody chairs the best we can do is $895 per chair and offer you free shipping. Your total would be $17,900 + tax.
Includes free delivery to one location.
Whats even better is they are willing to do separate CC#.
I'm waiting to find out the price on the updated fabric from both Keith at Business Interiors and Gabriel Ross.

I see some people commenting about the upgrade fabric.
The upgraded fabric is quite nice but I didn't order it for my current chair. It does feel very slightly more cushiony when you touch it, but I didn't notice any real difference actually sitting on it.
I think if I was buying another chair, I would order the upgrade, but I find the chair very good for "butt comfort" as is. The upgrade fabric has more of a knit feel to it and apparently it breaths better.

tilt limiter lock- limits how far the chair goes back
seat height - press the joystick on the right stalk underneath your thigh
seat depth - pull up on the handles on the side of the seat
arm height - press the buttons under each armrest
arm width - just pull on the armrests
backfit - rotate the black knob on the stalk at the rear/bottom of the chair to adjust curvature

Wouldn't it be easier to order from business interiors since their standard price for 1 person for that combo is $929. It's only $34 more expensive than ordering it from GR. Then you get the advantage of having warranty inside the GTA rather than having it in BC, or wherever GR is located. For a $1000 chair, I'd like to have my warranty reseller nearby.
What's the advantage of buying it from GR?

Its $929 for a single customer, anyone can walk in and buy it for that price.
There's no free shipping and GR does have free shipping, but all 20 have to be delivered to the same place. That's essentially what BI would be, unless every 20 of us lives next door to each other.

I just called BI.
Here's the additional info I got as a single-purchaser:
Promo runs for about another month. The promo is provided by herman miller (which makes sense seeing as how the prices are lower across the board for a black base model).
Changing the color of the fabric voids the promo.
Upgrading the fabric is about an extra $100.
They don't have a floor model (or any in stock) that we can see until next week.
They won't have any in stock until next week.
They're only open 9-5 on weekdays.
It seems difficult to do volume business with these guys.

Add $30 for translucent casters.
Add $100 for Balance fabric
Add $30 for White Frame finish.
+ $895 for the base chair.
this price includes free shipping to one location in the GTA and payment made on separate CC's.
I sent one more email back to GR to see if they can do any better on the base price.

I would be. Balance fabric is the upgraded fabric....right?
What's the minimum qty needed to achieve this price?

Honestly, I would look into buying this instead:
http://www.meshchairs.ca/product/futura-mesh-office-chair
I've used the Embody chair for about a month at my previous company (while the rightful owner was out of the country - I snatched his chair for the time being) and I personally thought it was too... harsh on my back, if that even makes sense. As in, I couldn't get comfortable in it, as hard as I tried... maybe it wasn't meant to be a comfy chair, but what do I know.
After giving the Futura chair a shot (it did cost less than half of the Herman Miller, and is built equally as well), I have to say you'd have to do a really good selling job if you wanted to convince me to buy any other chair, ever...
And don't take this a thread-crapping of any sort, just a constructive criticism and first hand suggestion from someone who's used both chairs (pneumatic system on Futura chair is just... wow)... as you will not only get an amazing chair at half the cost of what you're looking to get with Herman Miller, but you might get even a better discount for a group purchase (I'm sure you can get in touch with someone from MeshChairs to discuss that).
Just saying, just saying... might save you a few bucks and get you an equally (if not more) satisfying chair.
p.s. - if you do decide to give this chair a shot and do negotiate a decent group buy price, I might be interested in buying another one for around the office here, so I'll follow this thread for future updates as well.

Interesting, never heard of this, but I'm not a huge fan of the aeron-style mesh.... I prefer a cushion

Fair enough... I'd rather have mesh, as it's not only as comfy but "breathes" a lot more too... then again, personal preference.

I realize the group buy for this was cancelled - but what's the latest on this for everyone who's looking for the embody? Is there a good place in the GTA people are getting an individual discount on?

i second your inquiry for the cheapest place to get the embody chair. especially with the herman miller sale for 15% right now, is there anyone that has any leads on where to get the best deal for this chair?

I might be still interested but weren't prices closer to the $900 - $1000 range?
I think the reason why the previous group buy failed was there wasn't a significant enough discount to consider buying a a group.

i would be interested in purchasing the embody chair as a group buy, as long as the savings are significant enough. a couple of questions: do we need to entrust someone to gather all the funds to purchase, do we need to pick up the chair from one location? (or do they ship to each address individually), can we still customize our chair (ie. fabric, upgrades etc).

Unsatisfied Gabriel Ross customer: 5-6 weeks to receive 'quickship' order, customer service brushed me off, misleading info on website, no info on stock / estimated delivery time
- When I ordered a Herman Miller chair on Nov 29th, 3 days after sale started, site specifically said quickship
- Charged immediately on credit card
- After I placed order, received email notifying that ETA is 3 weeks
- 1 week after that, receive another email notifying that ETA is 3 weeks from that day to Gabriel Ross, plus 5 to 10 days of shipping to me
- This means, my quickship chair will take 5-6 weeks to get to me, well into January, longer than it takes to get an iPhone 4 when it first came out
- Discussed this with Gabriel Ross rep, and what they offered was: 'cancel your order if you don't like it', and then ignored

Goddamn!
Why can't you go directly to Herman Miller again?

I'd be interested in a group buy for the Futura chair. Sorry to go off topic.
Anyone interested in starting a GB Futura chair thread?
