How about Asus? It's not a big brand like Toshiba or Sony, but personally I like Asus. Asus laptops are generally very light with good battery life. Also they offer 2 years product warranty.

I think ASUS U30JC-B1 may fit your needs. Amazon.ca sells it for $899.99 but you can find the model at any major computer shops or online stores I guess.

Asus U30JC-B1 w/ Core i3-370M, 4GB, 320GB, DVD+/-RW, 13.3in HD LED, GeForce G310M, Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit

As you can see, it has Core i3-370M processor, weights only 2kg, equipped DVD read/write and "shine color" display, has 9 hours battery life ... under $1,000.

I've seen the Asus laptops, they look good but a friend of mine in my MBA program had one and returned it within a few months and got a 13inch Vaio instead. It does have great battery life it seems but he just told me "Asus is garbage" Thats the only person I've known so far with an Asus laptop, maybe it was just an isolated case.
I think I will go with the light Tecra laptop, i didnt know the difference between Matte and Glossy is just a coating and not a difference in Technology. Thanks for the responses guys!

ASUS for sure...you won't regret it. Also has one of the best standard warranties on the market.

+1

I picked up this laptop a few months ago off some guy on Craigslist, only $600 (pretty much brand new, still had stickers all over it). Good laptop, except it has no Bluetooth! Was it overlooked?? No clue, even my ASUS netbook from 4 years ago has BT. Anyways, I added a small BT dongle from Dealextreme which works well, but takes up one USB port.
