For those who are regulars at the Ellesmere location, here's a new branch that just opened. Same great (questionable?) taste at a much nicer location.

are you talking about Canadian Tire / Food Basics plaza???
Tangerine, another Hakka place, is in that plaza on the West side of Markham. The new Federick's is close by on the East side of Markham.
I like Tangerine better than the other Federick's. I haven't tried the new place yet.

i went to tangerine for the first time today.. got the chilli chicken and the general tso chicken...i was surprised that the chilli chicken basically wasnt spicy at all... i didnt want to eat the little chilli peppers but i assume the chicken woulda been spicy but nope, it wasnt.. it tasted good but not spicy... altho i thoroughly enjoyed the general tso chicken from tangerine....
i will try out the new federicks sometime for lunch this week as well... ill get their chilli chicken :)

I have been to all of them multiple times (hakka fetish) and I think Federick is the best, followed by Tangerine then China Cottage.
Federick's chicken pakora and chilli chicken are to die for...

Does the new location have a nice eating area (in comparison to the old one)? I might go there for dinner tomorrow, but not sure if it'd make a difference which location I go to.

Same old Federicks. The building is new and the decor way better than the one down by Ellesmere but the service still sucks. The food was hit or miss (as I remember it to be). Me and DH went there for dinner tonight and it was a disaster. Mistaken orders and a long wait for the food. Did one of the cooks call in sick for today? How come only 3 servers for a PACKED dining room? I felt even more sorry for the people who wanted takeout. The line stretched to the door. Two of our dishes were sent to other tables then quickly hurried to our table. I wondered if the people who got them before had touched it. The ginger beef wasn't ginger beef but a tomato soupy chili-ish beef dish. We also had to prompt the servers to bring us our drinks and more cutlery.
With so many other Hakka options in the region - just no reason to go back to Federicks.

I went to the new Federick's on Boxing Day for lunch and ordered a chicken pakora. They brought out my chicken pakora in less than 3 minutes after I ordered it. As you can imagine, it isn't freshly deep fried. The taste was there, but it just wasn't THAT good because it wasn't freshly deep fried.

I have been going to Federick's for the past 15 years and the new Markham location is really really nice compared to the Scarborough one and I feel that the waiters/waitresses are better/nicer too. The food does take a little longer but I understand that they only have been opened for about two-three weeks so I'm sure it is going to improve. However, the food still tastes the same and it's still my favourite Hakka Chinese Restaurant.
..If the Markham location is not the same than just go to the Scarborough one.

I went to the scarborough Fredrick's twice and both times I didn't really like their food. IMO Tangerine is better if you go for the lunch specials, the spicy ginger chicken from Tangerine is amazing.

+1 very nice atmosphere and i enjoy the chili chicken a lot... and the 10% off take out orders for $10+ spent is pretty nice (most chinese places are $20+ for that deal)...i get a couple of chili chicken and a big huge tray of steamed rice...$17.80 after taxes... very nice for sure... tons of food.. for sure enuff for 4 ppl if you dont mind just eating the meat and steamed rice, which i dont :)

I'm curious, does any Chinese go to any of these Hakka restaurants or just South East Asians
Last time I went to Frederick (Scarborough), with a bunch of friends, I don't remember seeing any Chinese beside me and the people that works in the restaurant.
I want to give them a try but don't want to feel out of place.

Don't quite understand your question. There are SE Asians who are Chinese. Besides, why would people deter you from eating food?

You mean South Asians (Pakistani, Sri Lankan, East Indian, etc).
We live in Toronto, Markham, etc where people of various ethnicities and races live
Here are some other restaurants to try:

I'll try the new Fredrick's sometime. The old one has slipped in quality over the years IMHO.
Lucky's, at Midland and Lawrence, has good food and nice decor. Too bad Hakka food is so unhealthy.

Went there last night. The clientele was half chinese and half indian/pakistani. The food wasn't as good as the original location and we were disappointed. We got the Chili Chicken, Szechuan Shrimp, Federick's Special Chop Suey and Crispy Beef.
All dishes were better at other Hakka restos. But the ambience and service was really good, too bad about the food.

I was driving by tonight and saw the sign off Markham Road. I instantly had to pull in and see if infact the new restaurant had any relation to the scarborough location! They were closed but @ the door, server told me:
- same owners & same menu as scarborough location
- just new spot and new look!
- open for about a month now
Looking forward to trying it out!
Also to the OP:
maybe updating the subject on the intersection would be better:
Markham Road, south of 14th Ave (@ Highglen Ave, across street from the Costco)
and/or just Copy/Pasting the contact info from the official website! :D

Went here the other day for lunch....they have the chili chicken at lunch. served with separate bowl of rice to be shared (don't know if that was normal, went with my lunch buddy). $5.75 with quite a large amount of chicken (must have been a 8 inch oval size plate full of chicken) which includes pop or tea. Will definitely be back.

I went to Federicks last night. I do not eat hakka regularly, actually barely at all. The food was pretty good and the amounts were pretty impressive. I had the chili chicken, which the spice level was decent. I had vegetable spring rolls which were as fresh as could be. I had chicken with pineapple which needed a lot of help as there was no discernible flavour of chicken, pineapple, or anything else. I had the largest mound of chicken rice noodles which was flavourful and I could eat piles of it.
I will most definitely go back. The worst part of the whole experience was a family of 12 that sat beside us with a bunch of kids that didn't listen to anybody. I felt sorry for the staff as they found most of the cultery and food they brought found it's way on the floor... repeatedly.

Could be

or Chop Suey with CRISPY NOODLE
Wan Lee also has Chop Suey with CRISPY NOODLE listed on its new paper menu:

The Kanshue green beans are also very good. If you want to increase spice level on chicken, get them to bring some hot sauce and add to hearts content.
