So my GF's cat has had the issue twice now in about 3 months. I need recommendation for a Vet who can do the Perineal urethrostomy surgery. I called around and got a quote for $1300, and 2 for $3k to $4k...I don't know why there's a big difference in pricing.

I would really appreciate a recommendation for a good Vet who is properly trained to do this surgery...

Oh, and I know in the states I should look for board certification. What kind of certification can qualify the Vet to do such surgery?

How old is the cat?

What are you feeding it? Dry kibble or wet/canned food?

Did your vet specifically diagnose the condition to determine it needs surgery or simply based on the prior 2x incidents?

What is the blockage attributed to? Is it stones?

The best place for you to go would be OVC in Guelph, but you'll be looking at it being pretty pricey..

Another idea would be to call a pet sanctuary and ask them for a referral to a vet that they use. You haven't listed where you are located so do an Internet search for one in your area and call them, these people are usually quite helpful.

I hope everything will be OK for you GF's kitty.

About 4 years my Jupiter had the PU surgery and it cost me in Ottawa $1500 and that included 7 days in the hospital. The surgery itself I was told is about $1000 here in Canada but the surgery can have complications and the kitty is not released until a real pee happens and most kitties won't do that cause its painful for them. That is why it took that long for Jupiter to be released but he is problem free. After the surgery he went on a wet food diet and all organic - now he is fed Snappy Tom & BFF.
If you have a car - vets towards Grimbsy and even on the mountain in Hamilton is cheap. I went to Binbrook and very nice vet & reasonable. Guelph is the other place that I know is cheap. You can go to the USA but to cross over with a cat you need all papers and the kitty could stay there for a few days.

PU surgery saved Jupiter's life and now he is a happy kitty that pees like a girl now :)

Good Luck!!
