Prices have dropped quite a bit on hotwire. 4* in the midtown locations are showing up at around $180/night.
I ended up going with travelocity and got 3 nights at the Shoreham (4*) for ~$1050/2ppl for the August long weekend.
They had the Sheraton (4*) for ~$1100, but I went with Shoreham since they have free wireless internet (based on what the reviews said).

It depends on where in Rockefeller center you come from since it is such a massive complex. I would say about 5 minutes from the main entrance to 30 Rockefeller Center.

So you really want to use a cab? They do have an express bus that leaves from the Port Authority (right by Times Square). $17 return or something like that. Sorry don't have a link handy but sure you can find it.

+1. I highly recommend this bus too. It has a Times Sq. stop and it leaves every 15 minutes all the time.
Its very reliable and much cheaper than a cab.
I think its called Olympia tours or something.

There are red buses(grayline) and blue buses (citysights) both offer 2 day hop on hop off. But city sights throws in a 75 minute cruise which goes by statue of liberty.
Gray line has more buses, so you dont have to wait in line as long.
Also a great way to see the city is rent a bike for a full day. It is only 30 dollars.
If you get a chance check out Metropolitan museum. Most museums are free, donations accepted. Awesome view of central park on top floor of the met.
If your looking for a great broadway show, check out young frankenstein.

is there any reason you will or will not use priceline or hotwire in this situation ? I am guessing you don't want to take chances on getting a mystery surprise ?

I actually threw a few bids into priceline but didn't get the price I want. I decided just to use travelocity because I wanted Shoreham since they have free wireless internet in the room and cheaper. The other 4* hotels charge and extra for the internet.
